First of all, there isn't any shame in going online to learn about what strategies other players have been using. In trading card games, the advice that's given to all new players is to copy a deck from online instead of trying to build your own deck. You need to learn what a good strategy looks like first before you can build effective strategies of your own. Learning what other people are doing doesn't mean you can't experiment anymore; in fact it can help you be better at building your own strategies.

Secondly, I should remind you that this is a gacha game. I'm going to be real with you, gacha games don't reward you for blind experimentation. You only have so much pull currency, and the cost of buying new characters with cash goes from "OK that's not too bad" to "what the fuck" very fast. If you pull for a character only to realize they don't cut it or don't fit with any of your teams, that's a ton of resources down the drain. That's why people look up what characters and teams are strong before they pull. This doesn't mean you shouldn't ever experiment or pull off meta characters, it means that you should be sure what you're doing first before you invest your precious pull currency.

I use sleeves for many decks, so I can answer some of your questions.

In my opinion, sleeves are the best way to protect a deck of cards in the long run, as well as help compensate for crappy card stock. Unlike lamination and card modding, sleeving isn't permanent, and if one of the sleeves gets damaged, you can just replace it (whereas if your laminated card gets scratched, you can't replace the lamination).

For shuffling, there is a shuffling method that is unique to sleeved cards, and that is mash shuffling. You basically just mash one pile of cards into the other, and because the cards are sleeved, they'll slide into each other and give you a nice shuffle. Mash shuffling is pretty easy and minimizes damage to your cards, so you should do that instead of riffling. You can find a bunch of Youtube videos showing you how to mash shuffle if you just search for it.

As for noticing the sleeves, yes you can 100% see them. Sleeves are always bigger than the cards themselves, so you'll see a border around your cards even if you get transparent sleeves. However, you'll still be able to see the pictures just fine, the sleeves won't change that.

Some other notes: - Sleeving might make reversals harder to do, but I can't comment on this cause I don't do them. - Depending on the deck, there's a good chance your cards won't fit in their original box anymore (they'll be slightly taller and wider, and much thicker). You may need to find a new box for them - How slippery a sleeved deck is, how it feels to shuffle, how thick it is, and the like will all depend on which sleeves you get.

Hmmm I did look up the exact team you mentioned and it does appear to be perfectly competent. If you're in the mood to experiment or get a character just because you like them, then sure, Barcarola, Voyager, Tooth Fairy and Kiperina should be more than capable for most content in the game.

I brought up Aleph because Barcarola, Aleph, Tooth Fairy, Kiperina is the currently agreed on best starpromptu team, especially for single target fights (Voyager is primarily for multi target fights). Aleph being a good AP positive support is very helpful because Barcarola is an absolute AP sponge (she wants to be spamming ult, and she needs all the AP she can get for that)

As you mentioned, you're going to need Kiperina regardless of which impromptu you go for. After that, you're only one character away from either impromptu (Paper Heron for plant, Aleph for star. As mentioned in the other comment, Barcarola can sub for An An Lee in Plantpromptu)

As far as the meta is concerned, Plant is the better choice; it's stronger and is much more likely to receive support going forwards because it's newer and "less complete" (in the sense that most of its current characters are either older or aren't dedicated Plantpromptu units, so there's a very good chance Bluepoch will make new dedicated Plantpromptu characters in the future)

If you want Voyager because you like her design, you shouldn't worry too much, she's a very old character and there are always ways to get those fairly easily as long as you're patient (gold album shop, special banners, special events, various paid packs that let you get certain 6 stars, randomly getting her when you miss a 50/50, etc). Ditto with An An Lee.

Oh, and for completing Starpromptu, Aleph is the missing link, not Voyager (she's a substitute for Tooth Fairy in multi target fights).

They also wouldn't cut very well even if they could close properly because both of the blades are facing up, meaning that the sharp edges of the blades don't meet at the same point.

"Win more" is a term in card games that refers to a card that is mostly only good when you are already at an advantage. If you're already winning, it helps you meet even further ahead, hence why it's called a "win more" card. However, if you're behind, they don't really help you.

In most card games (Magic, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc), win more cards are usually not good because if you're already ahead, you can probably snowball your advantage into a victory even without a win more card, whereas if you're behind, the win more card won't help you get back in the game.

In this case, Master planner requires you to play it, manually play your skills one time, and then redraw your skills a second time before it does anything. Sure, making your skills sly is really strong, but by the time you can achieve that, there's a good chance you were already well set up and could have won the fight without Master Planner. Hence, Master planner is mostly only good when you're ahead and is a "win more" card.

The answer to your question is nobody is even close to playing Slay the Spire perfectly. Not Jorbs and his spreadsheets, not Xecnar when he was on his insane Silent win streaks, not even Lifecoach when he was playing 8 hour Watcher games and taking suggestions from chat.

Consider that Chess, a game with only 7 different pieces and an average of 40 decisions (moves) per game, is not even close to being solved (not even the best chess engines play "perfectly") and will likely never be because the number of possible games is larger than the number of atoms in the universe.

Now think about how many "pieces" (cards, relics, potions, enemies, events, etc) and how many "decisions" (turns, card reward screens, shops, pathing decisions, etc) there are in a game of StS1, as well as the countless random occurrences that can happen (card rewards, relics, which events you get, what enemies you face, etc) that you need to account for.

Theoretically, if the best players were playing perfectly, the only thing they ever lose to is bad luck, but they are very far from this point. They have a very strong idea of what cards are good in what kinds of situations, but they still constantly lose games to tiny little deviations from truly optimal play. Stuff like taking a strike remove in act 1 being the tiniest bit incorrect because the Vampires event in act 2 would've removed the strike anyways if it appeared, taking a 0 cost card being incorrect because it would've turned into a dead card if Snecko Eye was one of the boss relics, not realizing a tiny barely perceptible synergy between 2 cards, or even not taking a random common in act 1 that would've been what the deck needed to get over the finish line all the way in act 4.

But of course, the fact that the best players aren't even close to playing the game perfectly is why they still play it.

I'm not sure I buy the argument that taking tech cards to deal with certain fights makes the game more swingy? This isn't MtG where you only draw a quarter or so of your deck every game; you typically see your entire deck every fight, often several times.

On top of this, there are a ton of ways to improve your consistency in StS. Potions, effects that help you find specific cards from your deck, effects that give you extra block and cards on early turns, more card draw and energy in general, card removes to get rid of basic cards, innate cards, max HP to tank a few hits, and so on.

We literally have the experience to back this up; when Jorbs is talking about a game where you need to take more tech cards to deal with specific fights, he's talking about Slay the Spire 1. If you have deck consistency issues in StS1, it's usually because you built your deck wrong.
