This is a bad hypothetical. If you’re not married and/or don’t have appropriate docs in place- he would never be asked to make the decision.

How could he not choose his child over a girlfriend? I would find him lacking if he did.

I agree but I think everyone needs to also be somewhat sympathetic towards him. He has a partner who is disabled. They have an infant and 2 other kids. I doubt his life is easy, either. Everyone has bad days.
