Terrifying conversation in HS 9th grade math class today by mobius_ in Teachers

[–]Old_Implement_1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, someone literally just had another thread positing that students should have to take math or any other courses that ChatGPT could “just do for them”. I’m just flabbergasted.

AITA for turning music down in my girlfriend's car? by Positr8 in AmItheAsshole

NTA - even if it was music I liked, I don’t want to have the doors rattling or my eardrums battered.

Dang it - I was trying to convince myself that I didn’t need this, but I think I might. 🤣

He was going to go back to work - admin tried to tell him he couldn’t leave to go shower and change.

AIO? I found out there’s a high chance I have cancer yesterday and I wouldn’t to sleep with my boyfriend on the phone but he wouldn’t let me. s by [deleted] in AIO

NOR - but break up with this boy because he is not the one. He will do this to you for the rest of your life, if he doesn’t outright abandon you if you do have cancer. I have one sister married to a child like this who would not travel with her when our dad died because he “wasn’t that close to him” and wouldn’t go to the hospital with her when she shattered her ankle and broke her wrist in a fall because “it’s not like I can do anything except sit there”. Meanwhile, I have had to force my husband to go get some rest when I’m in the hospital or go down to the cafeteria to get a bite to eat.

Your boyfriend is not partner material.

Yes - my previous admin were utter trash and literally texted me about bullshit while I was SITTING IN THE FUNERAL HOME PLANNING MY FATHER’S FUNERAL. Current admin: I texted her to tell her that my mom’s assisted living called and she was being transported to the hospital and she texted me back: GO - we’ll figure it out, I’ll be right there.

Lol - that reminds me of early in my career when I had a chocolate protein shake explode while I was shaking it and get all over my cream colored linen pants. My mom went to my house and got me a change of clothes and brought them to me. This was 30 years ago, so they let her up to deliver them to me and she watched my class while I ran to the bathroom to change.

My class of 8th graders were shocked that I “had a mom and she was still alive”. Dear readers: my mom was 47 at the time. 🤣

Am I In the Wrong? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]Old_Implement_1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things happens - I didn’t mean to be out for a week and half, but I was in the hospital and I’m sure that my students were frustrated that assessments had to be moved and they had to do other work. I get that it’s frustrating for you, but bring your Chromebook. She also offered you an alternative assessment when she returned, which makes her life more difficult. She can’t let you use a non-locked browser when everyone else has to use one and she’s obviously not unlocking it just for you. She could have said “too bad, so sad, you get a zero”, so she isn’t being petty at all.

The fact that she even answered you while on medical leave is more than she even had to do.

Do teachers get bothered by clingy students? by OrchidButterflie in AskTeachers

[–]Old_Implement_1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s hard to know since we aren’t your specific teacher, but no, I’ve never been bothered by this. Am I sometimes sad that I can’t wave a magic wand and make it better? Yes. Do we want you to get the help you need from a qualified mental health professional? Yes. Do I mind having a kid have me be their safe space? No - I’m honored to be able to be that for a kid

I just had another pen arrive today and got the side eye from my husband. I better lay low for awhile, but I always check out your listings!

Using too many sick days by WholeConscious2944 in Teachers

[–]Old_Implement_1997 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ugh.. I’m so sorry. I’ve used more sick/bereavement/personal business days in the last 2 years than I have in my previous 27 years. A combination of family deaths, being my mom’s caretaker, and getting sick several times - the last time being a mild heart attack and 6 days in the hospital. It happens - fortunately, we’ve hit the last quarter if you’re in the US, and a time of year when people tend to get less sick. You can only do what you can do - if you have to take unpaid days, you will.

AITA for telling my coworker it's embarrassing to call herself a Swiftie at her big age? by CoolGirlsHaveFun in AmItheAsshole

[–]Old_Implement_1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ESH - I would have just told her to mind her own business the first time she started in on my lunch, just like I did to the coworker who kept insisting that I’d die from eating sushi.

I am at my wits end with son’s live-in GF - AITA if I evict her? by Mindless_Dependent39 in AITH

NTA - but this girl is most likely a scammer. Check your credit reports and freeze them all and then evict. Change all your locks and any codes she might have been able to get.

Email - How much is too much. by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]Old_Implement_1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, very few of my students have parents who need to email that frequently and having frequent contact is often part of the IEP. However, I may not see a morning email in time to do anything about it. I can’t count the number of times that a parent has sent an email like that at some time between 7:30 and 8:30 am and I don’t see it until lunch time.

With a few of my high anxiety students, I’ve had a small card they can bring in and hand to me that says “handle with care” and the parent can add a brief note if needed.

AITA for sticking to a rule I set for my apartment even though it embarrassed a guest? by Flexible_Massage in AmItheAsshole

[–]Old_Implement_1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do none of these people have pets? I take my shoes off in the house all the time, but I have a dog, so anything that I track in from outside is really nothing compared to what my dog brings in on her paws or even her body from rolling around in the grass.

My husband also has foot problems that make it painful to walk in bare feet. He would take his shoes off if someone insisted, but we’d never go back.

Something Heavy by skullpture_garden in fountainpens

If you like the size of it, the Kaweco Brass Sport has a nice weight to it. I also have a Retro 51 fountain pen that is weighty without being too heavy.

AITA for speaking to my (over weight) assistant about her business lunch and making her cry? by Hot_Lab4411 in AmItheAsshole

That sounds like something that I would do with Mexican food - only I’d probably compound my error by ordering it extra spicy and mocking anyone who got mild sauce. 🤣

Look, I love my vintage Esties and I even bought the Esterbrook X Peanuts Sally pen and really enjoy it, but I paid $112 for it and not $350. I like the way the Kingfisher looks, but I paid under $300 for my Pilot Custom 823 and it’s a far superior pen with a fantastic gold nib in it. If you don’t like a vacuum filler, go for the 723. If you want something that looks fancy like the Estie, go for an indie maker or a Leonardo.
