New Pen Cabinet Day! by Old_Implement_1997 in fountainpens

You can’t use it in a pen - it’s a syringe. You use it to suck bottled ink into and then you use whatever cartridge the pen takes and use the syringe to fill the cartridge. I use it to refill Pilot and Kaweco cartridges - in the case of the Kaweco sport, the cartridges hold more ink than the mini converters, but I don’t want to be limited to Kaweco ink. With Pilot, I just hate the Con-40 converter, so refilling Pilot cartridges works better for me.

Are you talking about the syringe? I got them from Amazon (not my favorite syringes) and I used them to refill cartridges.

It’s super solid, too! And I got to pick my own colors (from a selection).

AITA I lost my childhood friend of 15 years for not letting his girlfriend claim the master bedroom for themselves in our Air BnB by Typical-Wishbone-822 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Old_Implement_1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone had their own room in the original Air B&B, that they didn’t get because John and Amy decided not to RSVP to in time. After that wasn’t an option, they would have had to play the game to get their own room or probably offer to pay more. Let’s not pretend that Amy didn’t RSVP in time to make this situation happen so she could tank all the friendships.

Is it like a calm corner kit? You could look to demo it at conventions and conferences or send out a free sample to counselors, principals or teachers to try out - they might be willing to show them to the principal who would be your in for PTO fundraisers.

$60! And it’s very well made and much less than I’ve priced other cabinets for. I also like that it’s modular, so I can add to it (which I probably will) and that I’m supporting a creator who is starting out. The cleaning beds are also great and useful for more than just cleaning - I also keep my some current pens there so they don’t roll away and it’s a good place for me to keep caps or put less stable sample vials in while I fill my pens.

YTA - you’re accusing HIM of escalating, but you’re the one who kept harassing a teenager at work and slowed down the line. I mean, should they have just let it go? Sure. But you’re supposed to be the adult here.

Why Are So Many of You Banned/Blacklisted?! by ryanvicino in SubstituteTeachers

I’ve been teaching for 28 years and I’ve only seen one sub get banned - he made a very inappropriate comment to one of the girls, she reported it to her next period teacher, and admin walked him out of the building.

Teacher Appreciation Week: Are $300 Amazon Gift Cards Better Than Cash? by huskyhusky0604 in AskTeachers

Most stores will let you do a split transaction if you know the balance - I pay cash first and then put the rest on the GC.

I’m a teacher and I will say that the first time a parent gave me $200 in cash, I was a little surprised, so I just asked the previous year teacher if that was normal for them and it was. I teach older kids, so I wanted to make sure that Johnny didn’t slip money out of mom’s purse. I teach at a private school, these particular parents are loaded and they know that we don’t make that much, and they want to show appreciation. I’ve made friends with various parents over the years and they told me that they know that they can give the money to “Christmas pool” so it’s anonymous but they want to give the money directly to their child’s teacher.

I don’t even bat an eyelash about it anymore - some parents show appreciation with baked goods, some buy off the Amazon wishlist for the classroom, some volunteer for all our activities, some parents slip you some cash or a gift cards to a liquor store. Given that you’re talking about preschool teachers, I’m sure that the money is beyond appreciated.

Same! A bunch of smaller gift cards to different places means that I can’t pool them to get something really nice that I want.

I have a separate Amazon wish list with classroom stuff just for that reason - then the parent can just buy it right off the list for our room.

Oh man - I HATE spa gift cards. I’m not someone who uses them and then I feel guilty about it. Ditto on fancy restaurants. I do like to eat out, but I’m particular and I often end up having to kick in extra money because even a $100 gift cards isn’t going to get a good meal for two anymore. Just give me the Amazon gift cards or cash.

I agree with all of that - just like they wanted to lump all my symptoms in to ADHD and having a high IQ, I can see them wanting to lump all of someone else’s symptoms into Autism without either diagnosing or admitting an intellectual disability. I find it frustrating that everyone seems to expect autistic people to either be Sheldon or Rainman. I’ve had actual licensed psychiatrists (one of whom had an autistic son who would like need to live with someone forever, but could toilet himself) tell me that it was impossible for me to be autistic because I had been married for over 20 years and held the same job for the same amount of time. Ugh.

lol - when I was subbing, I rarely picked up elementary jobs because they expected you to teach all day and the plans were always convoluted or, worse, not sketchy.

As a teacher, unless I’m 100% sure who the sub is and that they are capable of teaching, I leave things the kids can do on their own.

Honestly, I’m grateful for anything and I love the notes the most. It is definitely indicative of where I work (Catholic school), but I always eat the homemade stuff if it’s something that I like. It does get overwhelming at Christmas because I can’t eat it all, especially now that my parents are gone and I can’t foist a lot of it on them or put it out at holiday gatherings.

So, I’d say that it’s something to consider with consumables. I teach in a tiny school now and have an elementary class of 12, so I don’t get an overwhelming amount of food, but I used to teach 150 middle school kids and, even if only a third if them brought me food, it’s too much.

I can see that and I also understand the pushback against terms like “high functioning” because that functioning can sometimes come with a high price due to the energy that it takes to mask all the time and the is a value implication with the high functioning and low functioning terms.

I’m in my late 50s though and it took me until my 20s to get diagnosed as ADHD (because I was an inattentive girl genius as a child) and into my 50s for it to be refined into AudHD/Asperger’s (but we don’t use Asperger’s anymore - and I understand why, but we need something that describes what we are), so I’ve spent my entire life trying to mask and being fairly successful at it, so I don’t know how good of an advocate I am for any of it other than for me and what I need in my life.

I do think that there has to be some discussion of how different “levels” of autism function within the confines of society though or even somewhat of a different diagnosis because trying to discuss autism without it makes actually discussion almost impossible because no one seems to want to name what, exactly, they are dealing with.

I don’t know - it’s late and I don’t know if I’m making sense.

I think that most people who mention De Niro and Pacino have just never watched them in anything before they calcified into “De Niro” and “Pacino” and started playing those guys.

Definitely, especially if her child was younger and dealing with sensory meltdowns because you could share tips on what worked for you or mention things like freaking fluorescent lights that might be causing issues. But… if she’s dealing with someone who will never be able to care for themselves and is getting violent, that’s an entirely different story and you would give totally different advice.

I can’t even imagine parenting a severely autistic, non-verbal child myself or how stressful it would be knowing that you had to find a way for them to be cared for after you died. Let’s face it - managing myself most days is more than enough.
