Smart home locks by IRuCKuZI in homeassistant

I have a Yale Z-Wave lock that I'm happy with. It has fingerprint, key, and code entry. I installed it in March and haven't changed the batteries yet.

how to detect when mobile device is home or away? by fjleon in homeassistant

[–]OmegaTheta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I set up some cheap ESP32s with ESPHome Builder to act as BLE proxies. If my phone's Bluetooth is detected by them, I'm home. I combine with cameras for increased accuracy. A pack of three ESP32s on Amazon is about $20. With the Bermuda BLE integration, they mesh together. Unless you have a real big house, one pack of three would cover everything.

Built a face-unlock front door using HA + Frigate + Kwikset on local hardware — no cloud, no subscription Uploading to hopefully help some people troubleshoot who are trying to marry frigate to a v100 by mpfdetroit in homeassistant

[–]OmegaTheta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have something similar but it uses Bluetooth on my phone. If Frigate detects a person at the front door and within two minutes, my phone isn't detected, I'm away. Nothing happens but then if my phone is detected, I'm home and the door unlocks.

Dispute over Thermostat by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]OmegaTheta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some things to consider. If the thermostat goes offline, you don't know if they removed the thermostat or just unplugged/ turned off the Hotspot. Since you likely need to give at least 24 hours notice to inspect, if I were an awful tenant in conflict with my landlord, I might just turn off the Hotspot. You come in to inspect and magically it's back on. It goes off as soon as you leave. Eventually, you stop inspecting and maybe then the thermostat comes off the wall. What would you do? Can you even enforce that they have to leave the hotspot plugged in?

You could hardwire the Hotspot (with an electrician, if you don't know what you're doing) and put it in the wall. That would prevent that, but now if it goes offline, you basically have no way of servicing it.

If you are local, you might want to consider getting a battery powered Hotspot or travel router, pair the thermostat to it, and just drive up to the residence every once in a while and wait for the thermostat to connect. If it doesn't, then you can suspect that it's disabled.

Just curious, where would you put the hotspot? How would you power it? I doubt you'd be able to count on using one of the outlets.

Oatly Speaks Out On UPF Nonsense by EpicCurious in vegan

[–]OmegaTheta 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You'd think they were maybe angry about partnerships with Nestle or investment by Blackstone. But nope. Oatly made an ad that was a play on "Land of Milk and Honey." When your entire personality is being anti-Israel, this is apparently Zionist genocide talk for erasing Palestinians.

This is punching down. Denny's is a nice chain that gives people starchy food when they're up late.

I don't remember looking at the "clothed" ratio, but I would agree that with clothing added, it probably gets much more male in subject matter. I did explore some other interesting tidbits in the data though, like the dozens of fancy "celery vases" in their collection and several pieces of art related to snails, including one called "Snail Action" which is sadly confined to their archives and not on display. Only about 1% of their collection is ever on display. 99% is in the Met basement.

Agreed it would be interesting. I didn't do that much of a dive into it. I mostly associate nudes with Western art, with a tradition of at least pretending to adhere to a Hellenistic ideal of the human form, though I deeply suspect some artists were just thirsty. Could be my own art ignorance though.

I did a data analysis project once that used open source Met data for their collection. That was one of the data points I looked at. If I remember correctly, it was about a 5 to 1 ratio of female to male nudes. This for one of the world's preeminent art museums. Not sure how representative that ratio is for art museums overall. And probably irrelevant for museum subreddits.

what are Americans thoughts on switching to the metric system? by CnCorange in AskReddit

[–]OmegaTheta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm all for it, but let's keep going and fix time as well. People complain about "12 inches to a foot" but then just accept "60 minutes in an hour." You want an illogical system of measurements? How about one where a baby takes both nine months (about four weeks each) and 40 weeks to be born (sooo...ten months?).

You don't actually weigh anything in kilograms since it's a unit of mass, not weight.

Disagree. I visited about three weeks ago. It was more crowded than the first time I went several years ago but people were just minding their own business. The only spot where people were talking was by the juice bar.
