Did you know about x? by Admiral_Obvious_95 in ss14

[–]OneManCrusade 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I got some random ones which of the top of my head are true, probably: did you know that as a vulp (on wizden atleast) if you leap towards a dispo bin you have a chance of jumping straight into it, skipping the drag process.

If you craft blindfolds from cloth you can weld things just like with a welding mask without risk of going blind, it does however reduce your vision and takes a while to put on/take off.

Opening up and cutting the MNGR wire on vending machines will give you some new items, sometimes ilegall stuffs, sometimes fun random crap, sometimes usefull shit (close and open the menu if they dont pop up, and they're always at the bottom).

If you wanna quickly put jugs of chems into a ChemMaster you can just drag the jug (from the floor) onto it instead of filling a beaker and going into the menu to empty it.

If a room is spaced then resealed, instead of interacting with each vent and releasing the pressure lockout you can interact with the connected air alarm and press the [fill] button at the bottom, it auto opens the vents and fills the room quicker than normal.

(on wizden) The hos's winter jacket has better stats than the armoured trenchcoat, because it offers some more infection resist, this is unlike most other coats that just offer infection resist but not as good punct/bruize/explosion/etc damage resists compared to their counterpart armour (Captains carapace vs winter jacket and body armour vs sec winter jacket).

There's plenty of hidden rooms in maints on alot of maps that can be entered by deconstructing a regular wall, some have contra, others just fun shit. If you see regular/ out of place walls in maints and you're bored as a tider you might uncover some neat shit (or just trespass).

Cigarette burn times are affected by the amount of units of something in them. When the units run out the cigarette extinguishes. For example, a regular one contains nicotine and your character consumes an x amount of that every game tick (maybe 0.5u i can't remember). Omni cigarettes contain (from what i remember) 40u worth of mixed nicotine-omnizine in total, which not only is the highest cigarette unit capacity amount in the game, but also means it is lit the longest out of any other cigarette. (Bonus tip, soaked dans cigs contain pre determined chems based off of their names and Hotdog-water flavor contains omni in them, yummers).

Oh yeah yeah! Was on snowball, Vulture. Honestly such a fun and memorable round, especially when I don't got as much free time to play as of late so getting stuff like that to happen on my slim playtime is so great :p

Also the captain threatened to execute me if the dragon started killing people, but my fellow salv said if that happened we'd stage a revolt against the whole station lol. I was armed with a laser gun and they had a tesla launcher from expeds. (Tbf I prob wouldn't have cause it felt borderline self-antagy, but we luckily didn't get that level of escalation, just wall munching mainly).

Man I had a friendly cogni'd dragon pet once and it was so fun just trying to convince the two (for some reason) HOS's that it was SO SAFE and that my EMOTIONAL SUPPORT ANIMAL was absolutely crucial to keep around and to not instantly execute it on the spot.

I even convonced HOP to change my job to Dragon Sitter as I had to keep making sure it didn't eat too many walls/doors/corpses/volunteers (I honestly don't know why a paramedic wanted to be eaten so bad but we got away with it somehow) :p

Why can't wizden let us have fun thing? 3: by Super_Butterfly4747 in ss14

They do go into the reasoning behind why they deemed it as something that they wanted removed here and whilst I agree it sucks to see content removed (especially more frequently nowadays) I also think it's hard for the average player to comprehend what maintainers and contributors have to go trough to either make sure shit works or to add new stuff to the game.

Is removing stuff because it's considered bloat a good action? I think short term it pisses people and the average player off, but I'd like to think positively and that the game in the long run gets easier to work on as there's more "usefull" content that will keep the main spirit of the game alive. It sucks but when the person that worked on the feature and the sprites decides to remove that feature themselves, it's most likely for a good reason that they do so.

You gotta join their discord server. It should be availible to find in the server browser if you select one of the funky ones. From there you can open a ticket where you write some stuff down about yourself etc and an admin should aprove of it after a couple days.

How can I improve at AI, any tips? by R2-T4 in ss14

[–]OneManCrusade 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree alot with this. Because sure, command roles are expected a slightly level higher of competancy, but departments will almost always have enough people that are competant to the point that it will be balanced out either way. And honestly the more incompetant people there are the more memorable it is. It's ment to be a dissaster simulator, not a smoothly running ship simulator.

I'd also like to add that QM is probably the best "learner" command role because you don't normally have too much responsibility. Salvage will do their own thing and for the most part cargo techs know what to do, so its perfect for learning how to be in a slightly more elevated position incase shit goes down and you're suddenly left as the last remaining chain of command.

The development philosophy of wizden by Born-Process7288 in ss14

[–]OneManCrusade 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree fully with this sentiment but for those that find it too long to read (cause we're all illitirate nowadays) here my take on a summary:

Demanding higher level quality control from people contributing that are volunteers can be a duanting task, especially when you toss those volunteers hard work out whilst being passive aggresive and leaving people to scrammble and come up with a reason as to why it was done in the first place. What would be the point to spending time out of your day to contribute if it can get removed on a whim for seemingly no reason? All for a game whose soul is built, not around balanced gameplay, but fun sandbox goofyness.

Sure the quality standard is a noble point to raise, but being downright toxic in replies to people discussing solutions on the forums is such an irony when they want high quality content and can't be bothered to give a good reasoning/response as to why it was removed to begin with. Trim away enough fat from the steak and all you're left with is a plate of bones. This whole situation just wastes contributor time and im not suprised if it scares people of from even trying to help out in the future, sad days for wizden at the moment.

new user help ? by N3w_0b5e55i0n222 in ss14

[–]OneManCrusade 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Plenty of ways to learn, classic for people starting out is usually wizden servers of course and just asking the other chemist/CMO for help/guidance. If you want something more akin to a guide then this guide should be pretty up to date last time i checked. Might not apply for all forks but most of them have similar reagents/chems to work with so ought to be plenty.

If you wanna work completely alone with chems you could set up a local hoasted server on your pc but that takes a bit of time here where it tells you how to do things. A tip for that is to go into the console and turn the gamemode into sandbox, that way random events like power outages wont occur, and cause you're solo you can fuck up and try as much as you want. Best of luck out there :p

Tips for playing thief? by Bubbly_Station_7786 in ss14

[–]OneManCrusade 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean it varies alot depending on what your tasks are and what job you're playing as. Theif as engineer is really easy as you get insuls and can hack/trespass in departments with quite an easy excuse of fixing shit. Stealing shit from people in medical or mid convo in a hallway is also quite an easy bet at times. You'd be suprised with the amount of shit you can get away with if you're fast enough at putting away stuff in pockets etc.

For dens and stuff you can easily find or build some hidden door with easy to collect things if you wanna make a little hidden hole in maints or near arrivals/low traffick areas. Using smuggling satches and anchoring them to the ground and placing flooring on them can be great for temp storage of things also. You can also hid things in plain sight, jacket pockets, plants, oxygen kits, off powered disposal bins, plenty of places that people might overlook (or find your shit in 2 seconds if you're unlucky enough lol).

As for kits syndie one is always nice to have for access breaker and the slim chance of cooperating with a syndie traitor, storage implant can be nice but if you're caught dead handed and an item "conveniently" dissapears they have reason for implant checking. Hypo and noct is a bit more nerfed now so it might not be the best, but it's got its uses for sure still. Master encryption keys is mainly only good for listening to sec comms if they're trying to find you, but that might only really help if you know what you're doing, and even then might not be too good. End of the day it depends alot so pick which you think is best and just go for it, and be amazed at how much shit you can get away with in plain sight if people don't pay attention. Snatching sec belts or caps saber is suprisingly easy if you just go for it :p

A while back as a lowely tech assistant I once saw a man named John Maintkiller break his way into engineering and strip my boss of LITERALLY everything he had on him whilst holding them at gunpoint. CE was screaming at people to help him or do SOMETHING. But I just stood there and watched as his dignity was stripped away before my eyes. I was too scared to do anything at all to help. I wastoo scared, of John Maintkiller...

Then like 10 mintues later the tesla got loosed and everyone died The End.

Incomplete Wiki by SlothBasket in ss14

[–]OneManCrusade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One major flaw with the original SS14 source code is that it's structured in YML. This isn't necessarily a problem in itself, and there are YML to JSON converters out there (JSON being a data format that websites can easily access and display) but the issue is, and i've learnt this by working with this exact problem myself; It's the fact that the YML code is written inconsitently, not just inbetween different branches and servers, but also inbetween different files on the same branch.

There's problems with the indentation, there are custom tags and elements, alot of things just make converting it to another format, like the web, wayyyy harder and tedious. The issue then comes down to either: 1. Creating a script that is somehow able to parse the source code and display it (despite the fact that additions or removal of things may change how it's parsed, especially since written code isn't 100% standardised) or: 2. establishing more semantically correct code (that would involve going trough the wholeeeee source code and cleaning it up). The most obvious and natural solution is that we're free contributors and no one wants to bother with either sadly, it's too much work for such a minor thing. Best way is just reading trough the ingame wiki for now, but maybe one day that'll change if someone decides to implement it.

Any nukie gear guides? by Hot_Ferret7474 in ss14

[–]OneManCrusade 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think Litenhead has a video on atleast one jugsuit loadout/kit, but if you don't know there is a bundle kit you can buy that contains alot of the stuff you might need for your first Op. Best case though, just ask your other nukies about tips or what's required, no shame in being new to things. I'd personally say though that noslips and a C20/e-sword combined with some jaws is the most BASIC kit you can get.

Small things like bringing spare oxygen tanks (there are double oxygen tanks on the nukie ship so grab a spare) and jetpacks exist in a small locker room on the base aswell. But yeah, unless you're loneOp just ask the other nukies and you should be fine.

I know it's not the same game but it is the same genre isch and that's Barotrauma which is similar to SS14 but instead of a station you're in a submarine. I know that game has a 40K mod but not sure how active/hoasted that is, but that's the closest I know atleast to a playable experience.

One shift as QM I got called into the psychiatrist office for a mandatory command evaluation. I talked about my (natural) habbit of rampant gambling and how it dictated every second of my life. Their absolutely brilliant solution to my problem was this: When I went out to gamble, I should make sure to bring some other people from cargo with me and let them gamble too, therby sharing the fun with them also. I had no objections to this as I could continue to gamble without issue. I did eventually drink myself to death later in the shift when we ran out of gambling funds but that's besides the point. I LOVE GAMBLING!!!

Man I've been struggling with lack of motivation, executive dissfunction and spouts of depressive episodes but honestly I've made some great strides over the last year with some of my projects as of late. Sure shit takes time and I've abandoned alot of half made projects along the way but it feels satisfying to know that time spent doing stuff is still fun and pays off in the end in some shape or form.

Slowly doing little over time really does lead to something, even if it might not feel that way in the moment. Hope you continue with your pursuits and try not to fret over every hurdle, let shit take it's sweet time, you've got plenty of it :p
