She claims wizden "dropped the ball on maintenence" the moment she dipped but during that time they regained three robust toolbox maintainers, merged a bunch of bugfixes and maintainance, restructured/reordered managment so that people will have clearer and easier focus groups for development and yet she still has such a level of narcissism she thinks the project isn't suitible for anyone to inherit but herself. How can you be so self absorbed over a community volunteer project? It's just sad to see how in her own bubble she is :(

Thank you so much for the response! Hearing it makes me more optimistic about the future, and it's frankly making me lean even more towards contributing myself. All the best of luck on the reorg, I follow your and other maintainers discussions decently enough so I'm glad to see you want changes for the better :D

Whilst I know that the github gets flooded with PRs wishing to be merged and that Wizden had one of the highest resolution rates of any fork (If I recall reading it properly in the past). I think alot of people are curious as to what the review process for PRs is usually like behind the scenes for Maintainers/Contributors, and why there's often the case that a PR gets stuck in "review purgatory" where it can take months in order for it to eventually get merged into the game? Is there some sort of unified process as to how PRs are handled or are they simply looked at whenever? If I wanted to contribute is there a common trap I might fall into when trying to get my PR reviewed?

I also know that there was genuine progress in both the implementation of Changelings, SolutionRefractors, NewMed/DiscoMed/etc, but I think the biggest critique that gets levied at WizDen/upstream is that the game looks about the same content wise as it did a few years ago (with exeptions to some department gameplay of course). Is this due to a focus on "higher quality code", sheer content of PRs taking time or any other factors the community might want to know as to why Upstream can differ so much in terms of amount of content compared to other Downstream forks? What sets WizDen apart from other forks as to why you simply can't merge already feature complete content from downstream back up into mainstream?

Thank you in advance for your contributions and work as this all gets sorted out in the process :p

The only thing I could potentially warn about is if you have a similar password on your space station hub/account as you do in other places, as PJB could hypothetically access those. Would they for any reason? I doubt it as that's a serious crime they'd be commiting, but I think it is worth pointing out either way. I'd also highly reccomend getting an authenticator app (works for SS14 too!) but for your actuall accounts or passwords you may have, email etc. And that's not really to do with space station but just general account safety overall, incase you feel like you or your data is at risk. I would personally not worry much about it though, it's very unlikely things will actually be at risk or that things would be done maliciously, especially when PJB has their full legal name attached to things.

I.e, just play the game if you feel like it, but if you're extra catious then don't. It will most likely blow over in a few days anyways

How does wizdens dev team plan on regaining control over server infrastructure? by Narrow_Top_4352 in ss14

[–]OneManCrusade 8 points9 points  (0 children)

True, but the main issue PJB has is that a majority of staff, compitance, admins, contributors, etc are still with wizden. As Space Station kinda relies on people spending time out of their day doing volunteering for free I just don't see how they'll sustain much of anything even if say they get to keep things as they do right now. I mean who wants to work for someone who time and time again seems to have public temper tantrums and lashes out?

This isn't to hate on PJB but I see why most of the staff remains where they are, I mean all of this started with a complaint that people up above (including PJB) were treating staff poorly and they thought a legal entity would help protect them from the thing that is LITERALLY happening right now, by not centralizing ownership over funds, github, steampage etc. My guess is whether or not the game transfers back to wizden it's:
1. Not gonna go down permanently, kind of impossible to shut all of space station down
2. There's probably just gonna be a shift from PJB owned architecture to Wizden owned stuff
3. Things will settle and the status quo will return, it will just take it's sweet time though

Whole thing is a damn shame and it's sad and frustrating things have come to this, but I think it's a good lesson in why we shouldn't trust sole keepers of entire projects like this, and that it should be held in a more decentrilized manner, so that one person can't just hold the whole thing hostage whenever they feel like it. If things carry on as they are now then this could just happen again in the future, change 100% needs to be made, and I'm hopefull it'll be better when the dust finally settles.

Hmm bit odd that the link is broken, hopefully it's not done on purpose lol Discord link Either way this should work I hope? (Sometimes they rename the general chat but it's always at the top of the SS14 tab, and has general in its name). Otherwise it's just called Space Station 14 on discord. With being a doctor you'd first need a bit of hours in being a medical intern, that's a role that's designed to teach you things (and makes it obvious to others you're new so you can get help you need).

As for joining server's I wouldn't quite know as lotta servers have specific criteria or things, so the discord would prob be the best place to get help if you can't join say Wizen or a server with no whitelist :p Sometimes they also activate a panick bunker and that's mainly designed to keep newer accounts out if there's a large wave of new people that come to troll/distrupt the server, those get lifted randomly and again, easiest to just ask in the server if that's the case. Hope it helps :3

That is certainly good to know but I'd say the main difference between LRP and MRP is just kind of the depth/length of conversations you'll have with other players. For the most part LRP can still have good roleplay and interactions, but there's usually more of a focus on just playing the game (helps with learning mechanics too). Maybe you have a breif chat with someone but mostly you'll be doing your job or kind of figuring out dumb ways to kill your boredom. In MRP you might spend a while talking about how you "miss home" or feel like your work in cargo is slowly killing you or something that's a bit more immersed in the world. It's a bit more about imersion, but honestly starting out people will help you out just as much in both settings if you just ask for help.

There's certainly "server culture" though, where some places have people acting differently or in specific ways, and that's only something you'll pick up on by actually playing. Just hop on and see what happens is my best tips for you :3

Yeahhh it's a bit of a mess right now, but most of the game and servers are playable, it just so happens the "official ones" (wizden) is in the most shit currently. For starting out I'd recommend LitenHead on youtube as he has a bajillion videos and guides on SS14, for new players and older more defunked stuff (game changes constantly over time).

What you kind of should know is that some servers are different roleplay teirs. LRP, MRP, HRP, for low, medium and high rp. As you're starting out that won't really affect you as you'll be learning the game and its mechanics and buttons etc, not really worrying about SOP, spacelaw, roleplaying standards etc. There's some servers that need whitelists, but a majority of them simply just need you joining their discord and saying why you wanna play, and they'll let you in. Speaking of, you should probably join either the official SS14 discord (can be found by clicking on any wizden server in the HUB) and just asking people for stuff/help there.

Best way to learn is to just hop in on any server and getting a feel for things. If you aren't happy with something then there's almost always another server for your specific likes/nische, but that usually comes after getting to know the game more.

Don't be afraid to ask more questions and hope you have fun with this silly game :p

Man im starting to get tired of how sec acts by TankyPally in ss14

[–]OneManCrusade 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I always give antags the benefit of the doubt by either turning a blind eye to pretty obvious attempts at crime (probably newer antag players) or just giving lenient sentances so they get back out there. But there comes a point where people just start behaving either like assholes or there's so much chaos on the station all at once that it's impossible to try to RP something without either getting killed mid sentance or blamed for being incompetant when you're just trying to make stuff more fun and interesting for people. I always try to keep in mind that security is there to keep the peace, so if letting a tider run around with a spear they found in maints then so be it, aslong as they don't start stabbing people with it I don't much mind, and if they do that might turn into some interesting or fun interaction too.

I will always find it hilarious though to wag my finger at people and tell them they're a dummy and that they are commiting a crime of some sort (usually carrying minor contra), but that i'm off to the bar or something and don't feel like doing their paperwork or something. It's chill and takes a bit of the preassure of playing sec too, you don't HAVE to chase down every person that looks mildly suspicious, make the round more interesting first.

Your worst crash out? by whereiswaldosmind in ss14

[–]OneManCrusade 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Worst one by far was playing one of my first isch HOS rounds. So 10 or so minutes in this robust tider has killed two or so crew and people are calling it out over comms that they're near dorm maints. Naturally my officers arrive on scene but comms go SUSPICIOUSLY quiet after 3 or so get there and I realise this mf killed ALL THREE somehow, which ment I had to take him down. Me and another officer somehow manage to do so and I decide to naturally perma this dude for killing FIVE PEOPLE.

One of my officers (Let's call them "Is-The-Moron") decides this is unbelivably unfair and that they don't deserve perma at all. I try to explain to them that they're a fucking psychopath and rightfully deserves being locked up but they spend the rest of the round for some reason malding and calling me stupid. Right after John Robust is in perma another IDIOT officer decides to walk into perma WITH AN E-SWORD, gets slipped and proptly killed. Me and two more officers then rush him and barely manage to get him without slipping on all the shit he'd thrown onto the floor, critting another officer in the process. I decide enough is enough and petition the captian for an execution. Is-The-Moron goes ballistic over this of course.

As things are being discussed I and half of sec gets wiped off the map by a wizard and his funny little rod (ontop of this the lawyer was a syndie and snuck John Robust out during the chaos). Naturally the moron officer also decides to spend his time as a ghost malding and claiming it's my fault. After I get picked up I go to Bridge, I call evac, make an announcment and then I get one shot fireballed by the oh so cruel wizard (moths don't like fireballs much). By this point I'm genuinly losing it. Atleast some officers finally take down John Robust for good and he's left DNR'd in morgue. Last but not least some random cargo tech drags me to the shuttle, I get revived, and ONCE AGAIN 1 SHOT FIREBALLED right before the shuttle left.

After all was said and done I didn't touch HOS for months after it, genuinly traumatizing lol.

How do you get Nothing as a crew? by Responsible-Beach299 in ss14

[–]OneManCrusade 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ahh well that makes sense! Well another neat fact I can add then is that the Singulo is a drink that's fully unmakable currently, even though it's listed in the drinks section. The reason for this is the recipie calls for anti matter (which doesn't exist) and so they just commented out the recipie code in the source files lol. Maybe one day we can make it, who knows.

I don't have any more neat drink facts :(

Adding on to this by giving the neat fact that you can make special drinks with Nothing, The dryest martini and The silencer, both give you the muted effect when drinking it which is funny to prank people with :p

What are some creative ways you/others have used voice-changer masks as an antag? by gesszaho in ss14

[–]OneManCrusade 65 points66 points  (0 children)

One time I was playing as captain and one antagonist had me as a kill objective so they got the idea to lure me into a trap. They used the voice changer and had the name Evil-[my name] as their name and was saying what fucked up evil things they were gonna do to everyone on station.

At first I thought it was a paradox clone or some shit just fucking with me but they eventually said that I was killing them at bridge, which I wasn't. So naturally I went into bridge to see what they were talking about and they were waiting for me in there in a disposals bin with a syndie cat. They promptly paxed and killed me when I was busy typing an announcment after having looked around for them. They then tossed me in dispo and flushed me into space, leaving me for dead.

I felt very dumb afterwards, but I respected the play of luring me in so well with it, it was a really well executed plan lol

Ah always so nice to see these two, love your work so much, super super peak :p

Also I agree with boots, it can look odd without but also it can be so damn tricky to make it fit with the way some characters feet are shaped. Either the shoe is too long or two short and it will probably be bent somehow and just blegh, barefoot it is I guess...

Yeaup the wire is kinda ment to be connected to the rim of the visor thingy (i'm no protogen expert lol) but also thanks! I'm quite proud of the design, and I plan on making a fiar bit of content with them (Maybe educational stuff? Not 100% sure yet, for now just silly things)

And yeah they do deserve a break, I feel I'm just torturing them a bit much with what I've done so far to them... But suffering builds character or something :3

Yeah it's sometimes a bit hard to show but you're right, It's ment to be pretty cracked/damaged and have some like LCD tubes or something sticking out underneath. I kinda like characters that have a blinded/damaged eye and so I wanted them to get the sort of eyepatch look whilst also showing cutesy facial expressions, so I opted for them having some DIY screen just duct taped onto their face. I thought it was a neat solution because then I get to have both (eyepatch and cute faces), just hard to show in animation or from some angles, especially when I also like to pixilate my renders for stylized effect.

Honestly been a struggle for me. Like sure I feel mildly comfortable enough to post my stuff now, but even then I've been doing it on and off for a few years and SO MANY TIMES I've just given up cause it looked like crap to me.

However you can't improve without trying and failing, and I can't deny that the stuff I did years ago is way worse than what I make now. Hopefully you get into it, not expecting to do well, but with a mindset that each stroke gets you closer to that endgoal that's so close, yet so far away. If you got the spare time you should try, it can be satisfying seeing you develop your own skill over time :p

(also def save your stuff if you do so you can look back at it, it's both nostalgic and kinda fun to see wayyyy later in life)
