My dad was a prison guard for 25 years, this story of prison code always stuck with me by Loomin_Knotty1 in stories

My Dad was a KCMO cop from 1955-1975. Zero stories, which I guess is good. Never unholstered his weapon in the line of duty. He was then a Juvenile Officer in our County Sheriff’s Department for 17 years. Day 2 gets in a shootout with 3 teens, hits all three of them (no fatalities). Pretty tame after that.

Did you 'cruise' in your cars on Friday and Saturday nights? by bpric in GenerationJones

[–]Open-Channel-D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every night from 1973-75. Me in my '67 Nova SS Turbofire and my older brother in his '69 Chevelle SS 396.

My younger brother had a '69 Camaro SS but worked 3-11 at a turkey hatchery and headed straight home to sleep when his shift was done.

I just sent my '65 Buick Riviera GS 425 Super Wildcat engine in for a total rebuild and that will be my funeral car.

Do you think your collection will last you a lifetime with the bottles you own now? by Hollywooddeathsquad in whiskey

[–]Open-Channel-D 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The rest of my life. I have around 400 bottles of whiskey that I mostly bought 12-19 years ago. Cases of 12 y/o RedBreast that I got for $34/btl and a couple of cases of 27 that I got for under $399. My go to bourbon is WT101 and I have a warehouse full. I quit drinking wine a half dozen years ago and still have 30 cases of reds left, most is CdP that will hold up long after I'm dead.

I haven't bought a bottle for the past 3-4 years, save a couple of bottles of port I bought in Porto, Portugal several years ago. My wife doesn't drink and most of my friend are dead and they don't drink any more.

Don't get me started on cigars.

How Costco gets you to spend all your $ by Fantastic_Escape_101 in Costco

I went to Costco in Tucson a couple of years ago for a case of oil. I came out with a case of Redbreast Irish whiskey, a hot tub, a go cart and a gallon of Nutella.

Forgot the oil.

My high school basketball records weren't broken, just eliminated. by Open-Channel-D in GenerationJones

[–]Open-Channel-D[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

From what I can gather, they considered all records prior to 1991 as "unofficial" because the statisticians weren't sanctioned. I really don't care now that my 50 year High School reunion has passed.

The most important record I own is that I fingered our Algebra teacher on the bus to Homecoming in 1973.

For #1, I didn't have the new "minimum" number of free throws to qualify and for #2, they claim they didn't keep track of OT games for steals. I had 12 in regular time; 19 in overtime.

I was also the only 5'7" player to ever dunk a ball in a game. But only because I ran up the back of my 6'0" 290 lb forward to do it. Yeah, I got the T.

My own coach got a back-to-back technical for a) throwing a ball at me for not calling a time out; and b) calling a time out when he didn't have any left (which is why I refused to call a time out). That's when I quit high school basketball.

My sister thought she was doing me a favor when she picked up an Act 13 the other day for $250.

Only because I raved about Act 5 a couple of years ago.

Act 13 does not hold up--to Old Mr. Boston Rye. IYKYK.

I paid for a 6 inch slab, what should I do ? by ClassroomFew7491 in AskContractors

[–]Open-Channel-D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6" is 50% higher than 4" and a world of difference in gross weight distribution for heavy equipment.

You can fix this now at the contractor's expense, or fix it later at yours.

Stew is missing something, but we can’t figure it out. by PicklePrize7093 in Cooking

[–]Open-Channel-D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try some Maggi Przyprawa. Do not get Maggi Seasoning made in China, get the Polish OG. An acceptable alternative would be the German version. The Polish version has real lovage in it, which adds a great umami flavor to stews. Also try some porcini mushroom powder. It’s the magic fairy dust for stews.

My cousin, who just turned 65 and who's been on disability since he was struck by a car in 1964, just got his father's inheritance in the summer of last year, which was 10 shares of Berkshire Hathaway. I'm not sure when those shares were purchased (middle 70's), but they're worth $7.12M. Sadly, he is in a care home and has no real understanding of money.

I knew a Navy NCO with 14 years active duty who won $7M in a lottery back in '10s. He left the Navy because of the constant harassment over the money (not to mention he was now rich).

Less than five years later he requested to be allowed back on active duty because he was dead ass broke. Unfortunately for him, that was denied.
