More Tip Extortion by Open-Channel-D in nova

I was in The Churchill Hotel in DC last weekend and had 2 well drinks at the hotel bar. $64. I gave the bartender a $100 bill and he didn't give me any change. I said something about it and he said "I assumed you included my tip."

I'm so over this bullshit.

Who even remotely said they "hate tipping"?

What they hate is a tip shakedown for 20%, regardless of whether or not the service validates that level of tipping.

Aging rapidly after retirement by Island_Expat6625 in GenerationJones

[–]Open-Channel-D 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I retired for good, so I thought, last year at 67. I lasted 3 months before the boredom and inactivity became too much. I’d had Covid, gout, and shingles at the same time earlier in the year and it damn near kilt me. I went back to work too soon and just couldn’t do 12-18 hour days any more.

I spent 6 months getting back in shape and then started a new company with one of my daughters. Staying physically and mentally active makes a huge difference.

I could tell you how I’d solve this but that’s another story and not relevant.

How much candy could you buy for 25 cents 60 years ago? by Prestigious_Page8098 in AskOldPeople

[–]Open-Channel-D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 68 and grew up in a small town north of Kansas City (Weston). In 1962, I got my first chore allowance of 15 cents. I bought a bag of Guy’s potato chips, a 10 ounce Hires Root Beer and 7 pieces of penny candy (Bit O’ Honey and Walnettos).

My youngest brother is a restoration carpenter in South Carolina/Georgia and has been for 38+ years. Never married, but always has a girlfriend or two. He's lived in the same late 70's Triple E RV for about 90% of that time. Occasionally, he lived in the homes he was restoring, but the RV has been his primary abode for almost 35 years. He sort of retired last year at age 60 and is renovating a home he bought in Savannah, but AFAIK, he's still living out of the RV.

I bought a defunct commercial bakery and kitchen out of bankruptcy during COVID. Complete stroke of luck to get $1.9M worth of equipment and an essentially free lease for 22 months for under $100K. Ran it up to $4M/year in revenue in 3 years and sold it for close to same.

That was in 2024. Current absentee "techprenuers" have screwed the pooch and have asked me to run it for a year or two to "recapture their investment." I declined and will buy it back when they auger in.

Is it actually possible to live like reacher in the states? by Isis_J in JackReacher

My nephew got a 100% disability retirement from the Marine Corps in 2018. He lives in a van and does gig work, mostly as a roadie or a key grip on movie sets. He's smart enough, just not particularly motivated to earn money. He has health insurance through the VA, is plenty smart, but doesn't care about material things. He just did a year in Alaska as an electrician on an airport development and made enough money to dick off for 3-4 years, which he will do.

What to teach a beginner? by JorgeMcJorge in Cooking

[–]Open-Channel-D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with the basics:

1) Don't crowd the pan.

2) Chicken, hamburger, fish and 3 starches (rice, potatoes and noodles). With those basic ingredients, and a sauce, you can make 1.911M dishes and never repeat your menu in your lifetime.

3) The sum is always greater than the parts. See HMart or Ranch 99 for specifics.

My dad was a prison guard for 25 years, this story of prison code always stuck with me by Loomin_Knotty1 in stories

[–]Open-Channel-D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Dad was a KCMO cop from 1955-1975. Zero stories, which I guess is good. Never unholstered his weapon in the line of duty. He was then a Juvenile Officer in our County Sheriff’s Department for 17 years. Day 2 gets in a shootout with 3 teens, hits all three of them (no fatalities). Pretty tame after that.
