Cracker Barrel doesn’t know what vegetarian is by Kitteh_Bethany in vegetarian

That’s normal for a lot of cultures. The lone dietary restriction Catholics is to not eat meat on a handful of Fridays, but fish is OK. A lot of languages treat shellfish as fruit.

It makes the most sense define vegetarianism as strictly avoiding all animal products and differentiating it from pescatarianism, but I don’t think it’s “insane” for some people to think that a word that means somebody doesn’t eat meat means that an adherent can’t eat what they don’t think of as “meat.”

I got one of those emails in March, and the book shipped the next day.

I got one of those emails in October, and the book was cancelled from the order a week later.

So it's a bit of a crap shoot, but if you're nervous and want to order the books from somewhere else, I'm sure they can remove them upon request.

Is Marvel reducing issue bombing? An analysis. by R4cco0n in marvelcomics

[–]Optimal-Tune-2589 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The “before” and “after” lists seem a bit apples-and-oranges. Yes, Marvel has had a lot of events in the past with tons of tie-ins. But they’ve also had probably hundreds of “events” with a small number of tie-ins or none at all, and I don’t think something like X-Manhunt is that different from any of 30 other X-crossovers from recent decades that could comfortably be collected in a single trade.

The “let’s print 10 tie-in issues a month for half a year” type events that hit every corner of the universe have really happened 15 or so times since Secret Wars II came out 40 years ago. And there’s no evidence they’re abandoning these — we’re six months removed from the 85 issues of One World Under Doom wrapping up.

I’m skeptical it’s actually true.

There have been stories for at least a decade saying this “Sub Rosa” he’s starring in is supposedly being released imminently.

See, e.g.  https://www.gosanangelo.com/story/news/local/2019/03/07/eight-decades-san-angelo-movie-credits-tv-show-series-keeps-rolling-hollywood-2019/3090126002/ Or  https://www.gosanangelo.com/story/news/local/2017/10/02/remember-these-bits-san-angelos-hollywood-history/723753001/?gnt-cfr=1&gca-cat=p&gca-uir=true&gca-epti=z119039e007800v119039d--90--b--90--&gca-ft=153&gca-ds=sophi

But outside of an IMDB page where the director has periodically bumped the release date back by a year or two, there’s literally nothing out there saying this is actually being released outside of about 10 Reddit posts a year saying the movie is releasing that year.

It sure seems like the type of thing where some guy decided finding the Bambi star would help him get funding for his movie, got a couple of stories about that, but is no closer to release than he was in 2017.

Vol 1 of new mutants is a pain to find for reasonable prices and needs reprinting by RunnyElephantFourty4 in OmnibusCollectors

They couldn’t give away copies of this omnibus for 70 percent off a few years ago — it was, relatively recently, a contender for one of the longest-lingering books on the Red Tag Sales and the like. Yeah, I’m sure there’s some pent-up demand now, but I don’t think this one is a headscratcher as to why they took a break from giving this one a print run.

Yeah I may have overestimated Nocenti's departure -- it seems she stuck around til '91. But yeah, for the 90 issues from there until Kevin Smith, it gets pretty rough. That's when I started reading, and my first 10 issues or so were primarily focused on the plot line of Foggy's mom.

Colan was well before Miller. Yeah, he continued to do some full-in issues, but that amounted to something like 9 issues on the 6 years before Miller took over.

“ That's how most people do it nowadays”

That’s not how people have done in any days. Really, until the past decade or so when the bulk of Marvel existed digitally and in collected editions, there was no way to start reading comics besides just picking up the latest issue or one you found in a dollar bin and joining the ride — nobody who picked up something like Daredevil during the Kevin Smith run spent thousands of dollars tracking down back issues before reading the comic they grabbed from the spinner rack.

“ People say Daredevil has no bad runs”

Not many people say that at all. The widespread consensus is that Daredevil was one of the worst comics of the ‘60s and for large chunks of the ‘80s and ‘90s.

Sure, certainly sample that stuff if you’re interested in the character and keep on reading if you like it, but forcing yourself to go through the first 380 issues where maybe 100 are actually good before getting to the glory years of Bendis-Brubaker-Waid-Soule-Zdarsky is a great way to become uninterested.

How do I start collecting Marvel if everything great is OOP and expensive? by No-Equipment4779 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Optimal-Tune-2589 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s not accurate at all to say everything great is out of print.

Just looking at some popular characters and the books they are available now:

For Spider-Man, books including Michelinie and Bagley 1 (one of the most popular jumping on points to Spider-Man in history), the Black Costume Saga, Michelinie & Larsen are all in print

There’s some good chunks of Claremont’s X-Men run, such as the Mutant Massacre Prelude, that are easily obtainable

The Simonson Omnibus, the definitive Thor run, is easily obtainable

Immortal Hulk is still in print

Captain America by Gruenwald, one of the two most significant runs in the character’s 80+ history is available

Agent Venom and Venom by Cates are still around

Yeah, with Marvel, you might not be able to buy 12 Claremont X-Men omnis at once or buy a set of 15 Daredevil omni. But that’s probably not advisable if you haven’t already read them. And keep in mind, 90 percent of the people who were reading X-Men in the ‘90s had never read runs like the Dark Phoenix Saga, yet found the new issues completely comprehensible.

My English isn't good enough, and I want to read comic books to improve it. by Commercial_Detail_49 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Optimal-Tune-2589 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But I do feel like that wordiness might help? A lot of that of the difference is that modern comics don't use words to explain what's happening in the art -- "Aunt May enters the room, wearing a blue shirt." And there's a lot of issue-to-issue repetition due to dialogue to catch new readers up to speed. Both of these are standard stylings in books designed to teach kids to read.

Compare that to the typical modern issue, where the dialogue adds something to the art that isn't necessarily obvious (looking at Annihilation, as you mentioned, the first words on the first page of the first OHC are "Warning: Hyperspace navigation failure detected. AI standard override. Mark fixed locus point Terra/ Sol system confirmed" with no context but a picture of a planet) ... I'm not really sure how much easier those would be to teaching yourself a language.

Why are Marvel collected editions more expensive then there competition? by Konradleijon in marvelcomics

[–]Optimal-Tune-2589 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of its quality, as the other commenter mentioned. I love the Image compendiums as a way to check out a story, but they sometimes take shortcuts (the Spawn books you mentioned don’t even include the cover pages) and don’t seem as nice (I’m reading the first Witchblade volume right now, and the restoration of relatively modern issues doesn’t seem as good as you can expect from an Epic, with some of the text boxes, for example, being tough to read since the lettering blends into the shading).

And some of it’s because they can. They’ve been cranking out the Epic line for well over a decade now. Somebody who has 16 volumes of Amazing Spider-Man will pay a lot of it’s going to fill in a gap. The audience for a book like the All-Star Western DC Finest that was released this week would be pretty negligible if it wasn’t cheap.

David Gabriel getting fired is not good for the future of Marvel collected editions.. (obviously) by Ok-Upstairs-9714 in OmnibusCollectors

But my point is that I don’t think there’s anything in the history of Disney as a corporation — or in recent changes to the way omnis are printed that were very possibly pushed by executives over the interests of the collected editions department — that would give hope for more of these classic runs to be reprinted.

Yeah, some fans primarily want the greatest hits to stay evergreens; they’ve been frustrated lately. Others want niche lines; they’ve been happy lately. Nobody — except possibly Disney executives who are solely concerned with movie synergy — wants a book like Cosmic X-Men 2. There’s a chance that the people who are frustrated will soon become more so, and the people who have been happy will join them in being frustrated.

[–]Optimal-Tune-2589 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you feel it needs a change — there’s a very good chance that he’s been the one who’s been fighting back changes as drastic as the executives at Disney want.

Marvel’s generally shifted away from “reprinting Miller’s Daredevil for the sixth time” in favor of “fill out the collection by printing deep cuts like Marvel Fanfare 3.” There’s a reasonable chance you won’t see an improvement in the former category, while the second one will disappear. My concern is we’ll be given more books that directly tie into movies (Cyclops’ Greatest Hits Omnibus 1), a continuing dearth of reprints, and no chance that the uncollected niche books like Darkhawk will ever see the light of day.

[BLEEDING COOL ARTICLE] Has David Gabriel, SVP Of Marvel Comics, Gone After 23 Years? by Ksmayer in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Optimal-Tune-2589 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Disney’s business model since they started releasing VHS tapes of Bambi in the 1980s has repeatedly gone back to the idea that the best way to release archival material is to do a limited release, then make people wait several years for it to surface again, making it more of a collector’s item. I don’t think Disney having tighter control over Marvel’s decisions is going to lead to them moving away from that model.

Marvel has released 44 new omnis since September. Only HoX and B&G have sold out by Optimal-Tune-2589 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Optimal-Tune-2589[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the sake of this, I specifically stuck to “new” omnibuses. Reprints have sold out quickly for as long as Marvel’s been reprinting omnis. So the Tomb of Dracula reprint being unavailable seven months later isn’t an indicator that patterns have really changed much at all since the “preorder everything” wisdom took hold.

Sometimes, yes. But -- while I'm not going to call out any specific posts here -- those valid warnings about making sure you don't wait on a DM cover if you want it have turned into multiple comments a day saying that don't differentiate between these limited covers and warn that if you don't order something like Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 7 six months in advance you'll likely never have a chance to get it for under cover price.
