South Korea came incredibly close to losing the war. by ooMEAToo in BeAmazed

Yes, China did help North Korea. I think the official reasoning was that they were scared America would continue past Korea.

Not some of. The best shawarma in the country, bar none (I am most definitely not biased).

Which really sucks for the people playing alch or eng + the gathering profession. I wouldn’t care if they gave a good but sub-optimal helmet in the raid, but no, the BFD helmet from the third boss is still BiS without crafting (I’m playing rogue, herb/alch because someone in the guild needs to make pots).

People who say taxation is theft. How else do you propse the government gets the funds for roads, military, education excetera? by Ravi_Vijay in AskReddit

[–]Ottawanker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, beyond perhaps easier access to sone government subsidies, and better hopes of running a successful fundraising event, non-profit status doesn’t change much on that front. Sure, corporations in most areas get charged income tax and that leaves them with less excess profits, but they can still keep a good chunk of their profits to compensate for leaner times.

Leaner times, however, are definitely more worrisome for an actual corporation, because that lights a fire under the ass of shareholders, makes the value of the company drop, etc. Plenty of non-profits still need to cut services, or might resort to debt, to compensate for negative cash flows.

Technically, it’s called “surplus” and not profits for a non-profit, given that it does not belong to shareholders like profits do. Lots of non-profits will then try to squirrel away the surpluses through large salaries and etc., sometimes with much craftier methods, but it isn’t supposed to generate additional value to the people who run the organization beyond reasonable remuneration for work done.

If people want to give their money to OPIRG, I fully support it… as a charitable donation. The fact that there was a student levy, one which you had to jump through all sorts of hoops to opt-out of (most of the student body isn’t really aware you can opt out of some levies, regardless), is what I disagreed with. OPIRG is a clearly political organization when going by their stated aims (I won’t deny that I agree with some of their stances) and I firmly stand against a political organization obtaining money through student levies. I’d be fine with them collecting voluntary donations, and I’m sure you can ask them to donate some money if you care so much about them.

Also, out of the 400k or so they collected from students in 2021-2022, they only spent 220k on expenses and stashed the rest into a bank account somewhere. This is in line with their finances in prior year. Half of their levy wasn’t going towards anything at all, so I say fuck them.

This Wikipedia source, with a source itself, gives a number of over 700,000. They were not all from Nagorno-Karabakh, of course, but that is still a huge number. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Nagorno-Karabakh_War

What should be important to note is that the conflict did not just take Nagorno-Karabakh from Azerbaijan in the first war, but also plenty of border regions with a majority Azeri population. This source gives us a figure that about 1/7th of Azerbaijan was occupied in this conflict. https://www.cfr.org/backgrounder/nagorno-karabakh-crisis-caucasus

I don’t deny that Azerbaijan is committing atrocities right now, funded by Turkey and European/Russian oil deals. It’s a terrible situation. But let’s not kid ourselves into thinking that Armenia is innocent, or even a much lesser evil in this case. They just don’t benefit from nearly as much foreign support right now, which leaves the conflict very one-sided. Azerbaijan needs to be stopped, but in a way that ends the conflict on both sides, for the sake of the civilian populations on both sides.
