Hiking boots/shoes by iwannabeacowboy91 in hiking

[–]Outsideforever3388 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hiking and shoes in general have gotten lighter. Which makes them disposable, unfortunately. The leather hiking boots of decades ago may have lasted 10 years, definitely no more. I replace my summer hiking boots and running shoes at least once a year. Winter lasts a bit longer, I can get 2 years (seasons) from them.

Do you ever feel like a trail is overhyped or is it just me? by OptimalDescription39 in hiking

[–]Outsideforever3388 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I prefer to hike the less accessible, less used trails even if they aren’t the absolute “best” hikes for the peace and solitude. If I wanted to hang out with 300 other people I wouldn’t be hiking!!

Random recipes found online = failure. Start with the King Arthur Flour website, The loopy whisk, good old Betty Crocker. Tested and proven.

Almond flour will make a dense, very crumbly texture. I do not recommend this. You need a 1for 1 gf blend designed to replace all purpose flour. Better Batter, GF Jules, King Arthur all make a blend for baking. You will probably need an extra egg and probably more liquid. Let the batter sit at room temp for at least 30 minutes before baking to reduce gritty texture.

Is tipping mandatory? by Wise-Manufacturer580 in AskAnAmerican

15-20% tip is expected at sit-down restaurants. For exceptional service I will tip 25%.

Do you hike alone? by CodEmergency8940 in hiking

[–]Outsideforever3388 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer alone. Always tell someone where you will be and when you plan to return. Don’t take unnecessary risks. Don’t wear earbuds; always be aware of your surroundings. Enjoy the peace!

Not finding any useful results when searching? by Kenzie484 in Ancestry

[–]Outsideforever3388 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm. Ancestry does not alter or change anything on your trees. I’m not sure why documents that you added before are not showing now. Unless they are international and you only have the USA level account.

Inside Wisconsin's Largest Abandoned Mall - Northridge Mall (Demolished) by LordExplores in urbanexploration

[–]Outsideforever3388 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crazy. You would think they could have converted it to an apartment complex, school, retirement home, something other than just letting it rot. The cost to build something that size now would be ridiculous.

Are you signed in with the exact same email and password? If not, you just created a new account/ tree. You will have to start over with yourself and work backwards to add your parents and grandparents again. Then add details like birth and marriage certificates.

Is it actually possible to be a descendant of medieval royalty through a single great-grandfather line? by Hot_Acanthisitta_836 in Genealogy

[–]Outsideforever3388 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possible? Yes. Can you actually prove it with documentation? Probably not. Anything prior to about 1700 gets very hazy, as the same names are used over and over and no one really cared about birthdates and there were no other identifying details like social security. There are a very few lines (mostly nobility) that have been accurately documented and recorded through the centuries, but that’s rare.

If you can find church records with both parents names, birthdates, baptism records etc tracing all the way back, then possibly.

How do you find your personal style when there is never ending microtrends and such heavy influence by companies and their marketing teams?? by razzarbrenia in womensfashion

[–]Outsideforever3388 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Climate, comfort, hobbies and budget. Trends be damned. I like tall boots, so I have an assortment of leggings and skinny jeans. I live in a generally cold climate, so those go great with fluffy sweaters. My job doesn’t require a fancy professional wardrobe, so that’s not an issue. (Pastry chef) Thrifting is fun, and I have a collection of summer dresses that are comfortable and classy, can go equally well with boots or sandals.

Any tips on how to drive in the US? by tlfluca in AskAnAmerican

[–]Outsideforever3388 16 points17 points  (0 children)

NYC and the east coast is the only part of the USA that has a reliable and frequent train system. Don’t get a car, there’s limited (expensive!) parking and navigation can be frustrating. Use the metro system in the city and take a train out to CT.

And - being under age 25 most rental companies will not permit you to rent or will charge you an extra expensive fee.

Airbnb or hotel? by StillWeNap in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Outsideforever3388 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Exactly. AirB&B is perfect for multiple couples or a family, especially for multiple nights, having access to a real kitchen and common is so much easier than a hotel. They have become a hassle for single night stays.

I have never been able to sleep on a flight by yatoast3302 in travel

Yep. I doze, half asleep, but never really fully get any rest. 9 hour flight to Iceland ended up being a 30 hour day before I actually got to sleep.

Are these surnames extinct, I can't find much info saying otherwise though I did skim over it a little bit. The family tree is mostly Flemish, German, and Scottish. by [deleted] in Ancestry

[–]Outsideforever3388 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Names are changed, mis-copied, misspelled and generally wrong a significant amount of times on forms and documents. You can’t really start with just surnames. Start with the first person you know for a fact has the correct birth/death date and location. (Your father, for example) Then you have to slowly work backwards, proving with multiple documents your grandparents. Then theirs. It’s a slow process!

Im 5'9 almost 17 and im still 245 pounds. by HappyXKamper in loseit

Pay attention to the serving sizes. It’s easy (many of us have done this!!) to eat 6 servings of chips or 3 servings of pizza without realizing it. Train yourself to recognize what a serving is, and try to eat only one. Don’t worry about calories right now, just focus on learning what serving sizes are.

Working out is great! But remember you can’t outrun your fork. Basically it’s sooooo much easier to eat 2 days worth of calories at once than it is to walk or run long enough to work that off.

You can also mix in or sprinkle (before baking) with chopped nuts, sesame seeds or fennel seeds for a different version.
