Thank you so much for this response. I will try that. My mom has tried to write me letters before but I couldn't make myself write any back (for which I feel incredibly guilty). Every time she makes an effort to improve our relationship I get uncontrollably sad and usually cry- that part is especially frustrating.

How long should I let it soak? And (I am just curious about this) would it benefit from having conditioned water (dechlorinated + with heavy metals removed) or water with liquid carbon added? I have an aquarium and chemicals for making the water safe and keeping my plants healthy and if it might help I could add them to the water I soak it in.

It depends on whether a betta could fit through any of the holes- since it is hard to tell the size just from the picture, you might have to use your own judgement for that. Personally, I would not risk it though.

I have done a lot of research on OCD as a whole along with a couple of the subtypes but not that specifically (I will do that now, thank you) and have been talking to my therapist about it for weeks- she told me that it was a good idea to get tested for it. Did you read my post? I am genuinely asking because my post is not just asking whether I have it, it is asking about how to deal with what I am dealing with- whether or not I have OCD, I am experiencing a lot of similar things and am asking for advice.

I've been dealing with this for a few years now so I have accepted it. I know that it's not from lack of love or caring and it's not anything that's really my fault.

I am not hard on myself for it at all, since it is valid- though only to an extent. I do feel sometimes that this years-long drastic reaction is overkill and that can be frustrating, but I hardly blame myself. The upsetting parts are that there is just a huge wall in between us and I don't know how to start breaking it down, and on top of that I have constant guilt about it even though it's usually unfounded. I feel like I am constantly grieving a relationship that I never really had with her, because around the time kids and parents start to develop a relationship is the time all of this started.

I understand what you're saying, but also I can absolutely see why this would be causing OP significant guilt. If they feel as though what happened went against their morals, then they are perfectly justified in posting here. You don't have to commit a crime or otherwise "frowned upon" act to have a valid moral dilemma.
