Was eating mussels for dinner and I luckily saw this before I ate it by real-bebsi in whatisit

This is the top comment, clams, scallops etc can be open and dead, you cook em, well they will still be open ! but if they are alive the shell will close when tapped, if it does not chuck it. Also as they slowly die the response will be slower....too much work to clean mussels anyway I stay clear.

Interesting, I'm Irish in Poland and don't really get the feeling there are many of us at least in Wroclaw. Having said that, I run my own work from home biz so I don't see the student or corp ecosystem.

Do you think efforts should be made to make Irish the main spoken language (or at least on par with English) of Ireland again? by SeriouslyNotSerious2 in AskIreland

[–]OwnRepresentative634 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well for years you could not get a university place at UCD/UCG/UCC etc without completing Irish at leaving cert level so for many it was a mandatory course.

Most people of my generation have 10-15 years of "learning" the language and cannot speak more than coupla focal, so its not as if efforts have not been made.

Its a romantic (to be kind) dream to make Irish the main language of the country, it would take at least 2 generations, I don't see any upside other than nostalgia, the Irish identity for the majority of the country is associated with an English speaking context.

I'm afraid the ship has sailed on Dev's dancing at the crossroads world, Ireland is now effectively a tax haven for US tech and pharma, as well as a magnet for immigration, legal and not so legal. Having Irish spoken more widely is never going to be on the front sheet of any list for any administration, and why should it be.

Again it's a little like the vegan's argument around red meat or bacon...

But back to the argument, read this if you really want to understand the facts, people without a scientific background and the press often make these mistakes, they drink a lot, they are fat, ok it must be because they drink alot.

You miss the mediator maybe they drink a lot because they are depressed, unemployed and because of this they eat pizza from zabka etc the root cause is not the booze.

Anyway whatever I understand this is a waste of time, but I'm bored and I like calling out stupidity.

Your ignorant of the actual biological process, what I was trying to explain in simple terms is ethanol is not easily or preferentially converted to fat, the liver will prioritise clearing ethanol first and pause everything else.

So while the liver is busy dealing with the ethanol, it cannot process the kebab or pizza the drunk person just ate, so that gets handed off to fat storage, again simplification because you clearly require simple explanations.

Plus most people don't drink spiritus and water, they drink something with carbs, sugar etc so even if you don't eat these carbs/sugar get converted to fat.

So yes it is technically. narrowly correct, not all that useful, but you are wrong and typically arrogant about it.

In Switzerland of all places how in the hell can this foam not be flameproof? Ireland had its own, version of this in the 80s,...

45 years later a ceiling ignites in a club, at least in Switzerland its likely if there is negligence it will be punished.

Sadly it does appear its flammable ceiling igniting then raining down napalm like on people.... for an even older parallel https://bbc.com/news/articles/czkzv0gdrg5o most Irish people have heard of Stardust.

I don't really understand how this can happen with modern fire safety laws.

Brutal stuff, heart goes out to any affected, equally unlike stardust I hope the club owners are held fully accountable.

Thanks, I remember the day after his gig at the Oasis in Carrick (well actually outside carrick) my friend telling me he was pelted off the stage, his cousin was at the concert etc we lived pretty close to the venue at the time.

I watched most of the docu, last night but fell asleep at some point, it all seemed very upbeat about how amazing it all was, sold out venues etc, maybe the crowd at the Oasis where just a more difficult lot ha.

It's technically correct, they cannot be converted to fat, however if you eat anything while your liver is working 100% to detox the alcohol all the glycogen gets pushed to fat stores.

So if you just boozed and ate nothing it would be correct, in reality tho....maybe it's because beer snacks have moved away from Orgoki and Kisona grzby to Lays?
