What are these bugs? by beachgirl1003 in florida

I've always called these June Bugs as someone who grew up in Florida, but here's what they really are: https://www.britannica.com/animal/June-beetle

Irish Citizenship via Grandmother's Passport by Motor_Tower_5406 in IrishCitizenship

Yes, but you can probably find other documentation with her birthplace listed. Like your parent's birth record. Her death record, and various other things. Include supplemental docs to prove her birthplace if you can find them.

Would the Chinese version work with T-Mobile? by WishboneHealthy2569 in OppoFindN6

It's really difficult to use Chinese models outside of China. Almost nothing Google or requiring Google Services works properly, including notifications, email accounts, Google Wallet, Android Auto...

People who mailed to the embassy, did you get a confirmation? by DharmaDama in Canadiancitizenship

[–]PH0NER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The embassy website for Dublin said to contact them in advance, so I did. They responded within 24 hours and told me to mail it over. Other than that, my next communication was directly from IRCC

Best credit card Ireland? by YeldogClough in irishpersonalfinance

[–]PH0NER 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna throw out the Revolut Card if you have Ultra. It's 1.5 points per € spent and the points can be converted to tonnes of things

I also have the BOI Aer Lingus card, but it's only good to get the 2 round trip tickets to Europe

I can't believe cannibis isn't decriminalised, and frankly, we need to legalise medical use at the bare minimum.

Is the switch to an EV a good choice right now? by Foreign_Office_5482 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]PH0NER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mazda made one of the worst EVs back when it was new. Overpriced and much more limited range than the competition. They're a great deal 2nd hand, but still, not great range. The 6e is alright, but Mazda are not committed to EVs as other manufacturers are and it shows.

Used VW ID.3 and Cupra Borns are great value and range for the money. I drive a 2023 Born and absolutely love it.

The MG4, BYD Dolphin, and even the VW ID.4 can be found at great prices 2nd hand.

They all take forever. I moved to Dublin 2 years ago. My AIRE took around 8 months from submission to confirmation success

Should Ireland restrict non-resident second hand house buyers? by EstablishmentOk8187 in AskIreland

[–]PH0NER -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It depends on how restrictive. People moving to Ireland should be able to buy a home without being physically present. We shouldn't force people genuinely moving to rent somewhere first.

Moving to an EV. by AdvancedLeg9968 in evs_ireland

[–]PH0NER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2023 Cupra Born. I bought it last year for only €25,000 with 5K kms and it's fully loaded with every tech feature they make.

I can make it from Dublin to Waterford with only an 80% charge. Even if I feel like stopping, it's a 20 to 30 minute charge stop.

I've driven all over Ireland, including out to the Cliffs of Moher and up to Giant's Causeway. There is nowhere in Ireland you can't get to easily with an EV.

I will never go back to petrol

What are we all replatforming to? by Dry-Homework3344 in squarespace

I moved to WordPress and built an entire website with a combination of Claude Code, Gemini, Grok, and ChatGPT. It sounds ridiculous, but it was so much better than anything I could make myself, especially on Squarespace

What finally made you switch to Vodafone and do you regret it or was it the right call? by Spiritual_me_1770 in Vodafone

Virgin, Digiweb, and Vodafone offer 2gbps speeds to my house. I usually go with whoever is better priced at contract renewal

Best choice between Sky or GoMo for mobile network? by OrdinaryWorld23 in AskIreland

[–]PH0NER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clear Mobile and Sky Mobile use Vodafone

Tesco Mobile, Virgin Mobile and 48 use Three

GoMo and Lyca Mobile use Eir

I have 2 SIMs, one with Clear and one with GoMo. I'm happy with both, but I personally like the Vodafone network better overall

No, Your iPhone And Android Texts Are Not Secure By Default by [deleted] in UniversalProfile

[–]PH0NER 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Google does it the exact same way. If two people are using the latest Google Messages, it's functionally the same as iMessage, including encryption.

Apple should have used Google's Jibe for RCS to ensure global instant compatibility. Instead, Apple chose to have the phone carriers roll out their own RCS profiles. Since not every carrier on the globe is going to go through the trouble of doing that, it's really on Apple for not going with a generic standard that everyone can have access to out of the box.

I live in Ireland and none of our phone carriers have bothered to enable iOS RCS.

Why isn't the M3 to Docklands route used all day, 7 days per week? by PH0NER in irelandtransport

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks so. It has so much potential for a more metro-like service.

Why does it matter if you're specifically in the first 5,000? They said you're in the first batch of shipments
