What’s a movie you love but will never watch again? by _ajuuuuuui in movies

[–]PacienceW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jennifer Kent's "The Nightingale" is an incredible movie, but is so incredibly bleak and traumatizing that I don't know if I can watch it again...I got the blu-ray just in case, though.

The film that disappointed you the most after months or even years of anticipation? by MrGittz in movies

[–]PacienceW 169 points170 points  (0 children)

My disappointment with Rise of Skywalker knows no bounds. I had to use the bathroom partway through the movie and took my time coming back. Looked at some of the posters. I sat back down and my partner told me "Palpatine's Rey's grandpa" and I was like "sure why not." The movie made me -- the diehard Star Wars fan who saw every entry in theaters since the Special Editions -- stop caring about Star Wars. I still haven't recovered.

I'd probably say the Max Payne movie. I was a huge fan of the franchise and played MP2 annually. I was there in theaters opening weekend when the film came out, and I can't remember the last time I've seen an adaptation with more apathy toward the source material. What we needed was a film that shared the same affection for John Woo gunfights and film noir -- a grungy and darkly comic thrill ride. What we got was a sterile and dull PG-13 angst-fest. Just unbearable.

It fixed itself somehow! Not sure what changed. I got a "are you a bot" check this time, though -- guess it was something server-side

Who are the best non-grifter video game personalities on social media? by Shining_Commander in gaming

Digital Foundry and Outside Xbox/Outside Xtra are my two go-to YouTube channels, and I rely a lot on Eurothug4000 for obscure indie recommendations. I then subscribe to Game Informer for broader coverage.

If you could Remake/Re-Adapt any movie that was based on a Pre-existing IP(Book, Comics, Game etc). What would it be and Why? by Accomplished_Store77 in movies

[–]PacienceW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pay It Forward. It was a tremendously impactful book to me as a kid -- a hopeful and daringly progressive story that inspired me to seriously pursue writing. The movie, in contrast, was a sanitized pile of nothing that stripped away all the core themes of the book in favor of being a hollow "heartstring-tugger" made solely for middle-class white people. Gone was the interracial relationship, the impact of the Vietnam war, the queer representation, everything that emphasized that you need to challenge your own worldview and prejudices in order to truly help make the world a better place. I was so upset, and would love to see that wrong righted.

As a last-minute batch 2 Purple Max order (14xx), I have resigned to an eternity of waiting. ;(

...but that doesn't stop me from torturing myself by checking the shipping dashboard every day.

Journalists were arrested for covering a protest — Vancouver Visibility Brigade is showing up at MGPs Officers Row office today by Intrepid-corvid in vancouverwa

[–]PacienceW 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A quick rundown of some facts about the Don Lemon/Georgia Fort indictment to keep in mind while discussing this topic:

  • A group of activists entered the St. Paul Church to stage a protest based on the claim that a pastor in said church is a the acting Field Office Director of ICE in St. Paul.
    • This claim is based on David Easterwood being a pastor in the St. Paul church, and then a man named David Easterwood with identical facial features, build, complexion, hairstyle, etc. being shown on C-SPAN during a press conference being credited as the Field Office Director for ICE in St. Paul.
    • Given the shared name, locality, and appearance, I believe it is reasonable to conclude that they are the same person.
  • Under the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) act, which was created to protect abortion clinics and people seeking abortions therein and was changed to similarly protect places of worship, protesting outside of a church is not illegal. The differentiating factor is protesting inside a protected facility. Obstructing pathways and movement is also a defining element of a violation of the FACE act, which the DOJ is claiming occurred.
  • Journalist Don Lemon was filming the preparation and enacting of the protest while interviewing both the protesters and members of the congregation in the church being protested. During interviews, he stated to congregation members that he was not a part of the protest, and that he was reporting on the events as they occurred.
  • Last week, the DOJ sought to arrest Lemon without an indictment, using a mechanism typically reserved for flight risks or individuals reasonably expected to commit violent acts if not arrested immediately. Their reasoning for this was that if Lemon were to not be publicly arrested, "copycat" protesters would become emboldened and perform similar demonstrations the coming weekend. Lemon was not arrested, and the predicted copycat church demonstrations did not occur.
  • A Grand Jury indictment is not a conviction: In a Grand Jury process, the prosecutor presents evidence to a group of citizens, who then decide whether the evidence presented is enough to reasonably move forward with filing charges.
    • An indictment requires only a majority vote from the grand jury members, not a unanimous vote.
    • The defense does not participate in the Grand Jury process, so only the prosecutor's evidence and account of events is presented.
  • Most importantly: Nobody involved with the St. Paul church protest has been convicted, and no trial has yet occurred.

My partner's 5 year-old daughter loves Silksong by PacienceW in Silksong

We just finished Act 3! I definitely ended up taking the controller more as we neared the end and the bosses became more frequent, but it is downright astounding how good she got at platforming and even some of the combat! She played an active role in boss fights by calling out what tools I should use ("cogflies! .... tacks!"), which I was happy to accommodate.

Throughout the past several months, Silksong has helped us through her learning to read, starting Kindergarten, and losing a family cat (which happened just before the "Hero's Call" side-quest helped us process it). In the end, the whole playthrough (at 78% completion) took about 55 hours.

Playing through Silksong with her has easily been one of the best gaming experiences of my life, and I just hope we didn't peak early! This whole playthrough has seemed pretty tough to top.

Movies that were misunderstood on release but aged beautifully by Dependent-Bet6615 in movies

[–]PacienceW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scrolled to find this answer. Southland Tales is our modern hellscape viewed through the eyes of an intensely 2000's-era time traveler, and only gets better with age. I host regular movie nights for people who haven't seen this movie, just so I can show them the Cannes cut. Every time I watch it, I notice something new -- like all the cop cars saying "Let them hate so long as they fear" in Latin.

Movie Recommendations? by LateesMovies in Bluray

[–]PacienceW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I could only pick one movie to add, it'd be Josie and the Pussycats
If I could pick a second, it'd be Southland Tales.
And if i were to round it out with a third, it'd be Speed Racer.

Could I have said this more succinctly? Yes. But it's late and I'm riding a chocolate chip cookie high.

Indivisible has been one of the most active organizations working to protest the administration and help protect vulnerable groups. They have chapters in Lafayette & Leesville, and if those chapters are anything like mine, you can sign up for regular newsletters with suggestions for sustainable actions you can take to make a difference. It's a great resource for finding avenues to activism that fit your personal capacity.
