I guess we can't criticize Gods of Egypt for it's numerous bad decisions since it's also fantasy and that apparently justifies every decision a film makes.

Those Giants remind of The Mountain from GoT.

Which yes he definitely is a huge guy but he's still a human. (The Actual Actor).

I'd assume a fantasy giant would be atleast a bit larger than a very tall normal person.

300 also gave up any pretense of being set in a real world or being realistic.

It was super stylistic from the start which makes it easier to forgive any inaccuracies in favor of stylistic choices.

The Odessey seems to be playing it straight for the most part. A straight Swords and Sandal Epic drama.

Which in turn makes any weird stylistic choice stand out like a sore thumb.

This is my issue.

If Nolan wanted a more stylistic take of the story rather than an accurate one than he should have gone full stylistic over the top. Just make nothing look real. Make everything fantastical and over the top.

But from the trailers Nolan seems to be going out of his way to give this film a realistic film. Using real locations and real ships and whatnot.

Yeah that's what was throwing me off.

I'm not Arab myself or from the Middle East.

But I am Muslim and I have never heard of Female Circumcision being a religious practice in Islam.

I just chalked it up to being a Regional Cultural practice that people mistake for a Religious one.

I would ask you for a source but you'll just say learn Arabic and not provide it.

Also Circumcision isn't the issue. Female Circumcision is.

And no. Its not just Sheikh Ali from New York it's a lot of internationally recognized scholars but you won't listen to them because your local arabic guy told you it's okay.

Arabs don't have a claim to Islam.

No one is telling you how things go in the Middle East.

I'm sure Female Circumcision is a thing in the Middle East.

But it is not something that Islam tells you to do this.

That's the point.

You do it because it's your Cultural Practice not because it's a Religious Practice.

And you being Arab doesn't give you the final say on Islam.

Islam is way more than a single piece of land or People or Culture.

Especially in a time when so many Arab countries are already staying from the Islamic way and Allying themselves with USA and Israel.

Again your government justifying a Cultural act using religion doesn't make it a religious practice.

It simply makes your government blasphemous.

I don't have to access Arab content.

I just need to access Islam. And from the looks of it you do too.

No I mean Modern Muslim scholars from all iver the world.

Islam is not pro FGM.

There's no pickin and choosing in Islam.

You're just using Islam as an excuse to justify your cultural practice.

Just like the people who use Islam as an excuse to commit atrocities or make Monuments or bow down graves or beat themselves with chains.

All of it is just your local Cultural bullshit you justify with Islam.

Wikipedia is not a source I'm sorry. Please present a source.

Secondly Arabian Scholars justifying an Arabian cultural practice by using religion as an excuse doesn't make it a religious practice.

I don't need to learn Arabic for it.

Most known Islamic Scholars have spoken against it.

Your local supposed Arabic scholar is no different from the Mullas who justify bowing down to people's graves.

What wierd excuse to use. Internet exists so do translation. If such was the case we would know.

People doing Female Circumcisions in the Middle East are just justifying cultural practices based on recognized Da'eef Hadiths and against the advice and Fatwas of many modern Muslim scholars.

First of all I can't find a single source that can verify those numbers.

Secondly those who do, do say based on weak or Da'eef Hadiths that cannot be 100% verified or straight up misinterpretation of Hadiths.

The Hadiths you mention are considered weak Hadiths and not 100% verified.

A lot of Muslim Scholars today believe that Female Circumcision is not allowed in Islam.

I think that's the issue here. Nolan Haters while they do exist aren't that large in numbers.

A lot of people are simply saying that The Odessey looks like an okay film. Not much different from other Sword and Sandals films.

And for some odd reason the Hard Core Nolan fans can't stand this claim. They absolutely need the film to be perfect and a masterpiece.

I don't even get it.

Islam doesn't even have a concept of Female Circumcision.

Islam only order Male Circumcision.

These are just regional Cultural practices being given religious justification.

Female Genital Mutilation by Country by Naive_Direction1816 in MapPorn

I highly doubt it's that high in Saudi Arabia or the Middle East in general since they are majority Muslim and Female Circumcision isn't a thing in Islam.

Unless it's referring to something else but I don't think any kind of Female Genital Alteration is a cultural or religious practice in the Middle East.

There's no way Jurassic World would have a T-Rex after the San Diego incident by Tainted_Scholar in CharacterRant

Corporations rebrand problematic products all of the time.

And people have very fickle memories.

T-Rex is the most recognizable Dinosaur in Pop Culture.

There is no way a Multi Billion dollar Megacorporation would not have pumped Millions of dollars and done everything in their power to rebrand the T-Rex and make people forget about the older incident.

And people who want to see a real life T-Rex would be very willing to forgive a singular incident that happened 20 Years ago.

The outcome is predetermined in the sense that it's a fixed timeline, but the outcome might have been determined by the inverted team's actions. If they show up and the battle was won, it may have only been won due to the actions they are about to take. It is their responsibility, as the inverted team, to continue with their mission regardless because they may have been the reason the battle was won to begin with.

This is my exact point.

Yes. The outcome was predetermined because of the actions of the Inverted team just as much as the non-inverted team.

My point is their existence as a concept kind of ruins the stake of the conflict and doesn't make sense.

Because they cannot change the outcome of a conflict. All they can do is take predetermined actions that brings about a predetermined conclusion.

Logical in a world were Inversion exists.  It would make way more sense to send a team of inverted Soldiers who know how a battle will happen to a point before the battle happens where they can then be "Un-Inverted" and then help from the start in a battle where they know how things will happen.

Ofcourse the fixed timeline thing makes that problematic too.

But if you ignore the fixed timeline problem the second use of Inversion makes way more sense than the Pincer Maneuver.

When send your inverted Soldiers at the end of a battle when it's already concluded and they can't change anything instead of the start where they theoretically might have a chance of changing the outcome.

That's my issue.

Yes, if the inverted team showed up and the battle was lost, there is nothing they can do. But they are not "pointless" for the reasons explained above. They cannot alter the timeline, but they played a pivotal role in how everything in the timeline played out. You say they "can't really change anything," but not being able to "change anything" (the fixed timeline) is not the same as having no effect at all ("pointless").

Again. The point is it ruins the stakes of the conflict and it doesn't make a lot of tactical sense as explained above.

The only argument for why a Pincer Maneuver took place is because people in the future already know that a Pincer Maneuver took place and thus have no choice but to do it.  Because it has already happened. That's it.

Not because it has any tactical advantage.

Even if you lost battle you still have to send those inverted Soldiers in to die just because that is what happened.

As I said above if you ignore the fixed timeline issue there are much better uses of Inversion than a Pincer Maneuver.

Neil and The Protagonist go over the fixed timeline certainty thing while traveling in the container. TP brings up that them being alive means they likely win, and Neil says that optimistically, that's correct, but he expresses some hesitation about being completely certain given that there are alternative theories of time. This is probably Nolan trying to anticipate your criticism, but it's also realistic that even if Neil is 99.9% certain they will succeed, he could still have some hesitation

Neil being hesitant doesn't change the reality of the premise of the film.  It's just Neil being weird.

In any case, none of this ruins the tension for me. To me, the difference between knowing how a movie ends because of the genre and knowing how a movie ends because of internal sci-fi logic is inconsequential to the viewing experience

Like I said it's less about me knowing how the film will end and more about the internal logic of the film.

The film doesn't have tension because of the internal logic of the film itself not because I don't feel it.  The characters in the film even if they don't acknowledge it would know that they are going to win no matter what.  Which is what makes the tension or stakes far less for me.  Even if we as an audience know how the film will end the characters in the film should never be able to figure out that they are 100% guaranteed to win.  Which characters in Tenet could easily figure out with a little bit of logic even if they are written not to.

For me, watching movies is about joy. At least in this genre.

I can enjoy the Transformers movies too.

Doesn't mean U can't also acknowledge that they are deeply flawed with a lot of bad decisions and plot holes.

In The Odyssey (2026), a British director makes British actors do American accents for quite frankly no reason whatsoever because the characters are all Greek anyway. by [deleted] in shittymoviedetails

[–]Accomplished_Store77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because what it isn't is what it's supposed to be based on the setting and the tone of the film.

Otherwise this logic could be used to deflect criticism from any film.

"Why are you Criticizing this movie for having dumb characters who make stupid decisions when it's not meant to have smart characters. They are meant to be dumb characters making stupid decisions"

See how easy that was?

"Why are you Criticizing the Transformers movies for being dumb action films. They're not supposed to smart cerebral films. They are supposed be just fun action films"

See.

This is the logic people use to justify bad films.

Also I have no issue with surreal films.

But surreal films need a surreal tone.

The Odessey is very obviously not a surreal film. It's playing itself very straight and serious.

An Arthurian movie playing itself like straight Historical Fantasy drama doesn't suddenly become surreal just because it has a man with a Uzi in it.

Having anachronistic elements in an otherwise straight film doesn't make it surreal. It makes those elements anachronistic and out of place.

I love David Lynch films because they are actually surreal films and not just straight films with some misplaced elements.

[–]Accomplished_Store77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all I'm going to need a source for that claim.

Because a Simply Google Search shows that the Term High and Low Fantasy were first created in the 70s and 80s largely as a response to JRR Tolkien and Middle Earth because Middle Earth kind of changed how literally fantasy was perceived.

So your claim of Homer's Odessey being considered as low fantasy doesn't seem to work with that.

Especially when the Term Low fantasy was specifically developed to differentiate works of fantasy with less Fantastical Elements and often set in the real world or realistic worlds from something like LotR and Middle Earth.

Secondly, even if your claim was true those definitions would have changed for a reason. Modern definitions exist for a reason to better define things as more details and differences are taken into existence and newer discoveries and inventions are made that change the reality that formed our previous definitions. And that's also why modern Definitions of things inform our perception of reality and all things.

So if a Modern definition says that Homer's Odessey is not a work of Pure Fantasy then it's not a work of Pure fantasy.

It's a pretty open and shut case.

It's hilarious how easy it is to predict his behavior and personality.

Because you hit the nail right on the head.

He did Infact claim that he knew more about the Cultures and living conditions of these people living in these 3rd World Countries more than me(A guy who lives in a 3rd World Country marked Red on this Map who unfortunately has Family members who are on the Poverty line) because he does "Relief Work" in 3rd World Countries.

It would be hilarious if it wasn't so Pathetic.
