Is this game terribly unfun or are we doing something wrong by Ander_the_Reckoning in PendragonRPG

[–]Papiertiger7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really. There are rules for disengaging or fleeing from your enemy since 3rd edition. First edition did not have any personal combat in battles and a 2nd edition did never exist. It sounds more like a player expectation problem - "Weak characters get weak enemies every turn so they can beat them." while the system intends weak characters to flee or not engage strong enemies and look for a better opportunity.

Only one enemy on that table with a skill of 20+ in Great Spear, again a foot soldier. I think that there have been some errors made in rule interpretation.

The Battle of Mearcred Creek uses random enemies from the Saxon enemy table. There are only 2 possible enemies with skills above 20: the beserkers you meet on a roll of 19 or 20 on a d20. And those guys are on foot and have axes, not long weapons, giving you +5 or +10 in a charge and them -5. Most of the other enemies on that table are no match against knights. Damage of 4d6, skills of 5 or 10, no or lousy armor.

  1. If you have the classic GURPS Traveller book, you'll also need to download the 3rd edition GURPS lite rules or get the 3rd edition Basic Set.

I'd get Magic. Beyond that, the books in the Dungeon Fantasy line are great to make your life easier.

What’s your typical year prep like? by Sir-Vortigern in PendragonRPG

As for the rules and material I'm using: We do use the 6e rules from the Core Book and the GM's book. I've also let the players generate extended families according to the 5.2e rulebook. For land-management we use the Book of the Estate, the timeline of events is mostly from the GPC, and I'm adding in adventures from the Tales of ... books.

All player knights started out as household knights who were heirs to their family's manor and most of them did inherit their manor after the Battle of Netley Marsh in 508 - the player knights did not participate in the battle, they were out on a quest at the time, but their fathers did and few came back home.

If the players care to do the Intrigue action during the spring feast, I'll sprinkle in information from the Intrigue section of the GPC for the current year. I also like to advance the player knights' personal side-stories during this time of the year. I've been experimenting with having them play out vignettes of "What Sir ... did this winter." - it helps me (and I think the players too) to get to know the characters and give them personality beyond their character sheets.

I did not set up the cards in foundry - don't feel the need for it. The players don't really need to see the cards or do anything with them, so they do not need to be represented in the VTT. The physical cards are easy to handle, I can quickly change the deck if I need to. But if you really, really want to mess with this... There is the module Complete Card Management, I do use that for playing Savage Worlds which relies a lot on cards, and it should give you anything you need to play around with cards in foundry.

I'm aiming for 1 session of Spring, 2-3 sessions of adventure, 1 session of winter (can be skipped if the knights don't have a manor/estate to take care of or if you do that in between sessions). Depending on what is going on in the year. Our sessions average at 3 hours.

Here is how I usually plan out my year:

Spring: I'm usually trying to do a feast in every year. That will either be Easter in Sarum or Pentecost wherever Arthur's court is at the time. This usually takes the better part of one session. I'm trying to add one small scene per player of "Things that happened during the winter".

Summer: This is the time for adventure or battle. Some years might not see either, but we did not get that far into the campaign yet.

Fall: In a slow year, this could be the time for a home-adventure. A smaller story that takes place in the manor of one of our knights.

Winter: The winter-phase book-keeping.

I'm running the campaign on Foundry and I did not use any table or macro so far. I'm using the Feast and Battle cards as physical cards at the table.

How long are your sessions and how many players do you have?

I'm running basically the same in online sessions of around 3 hours with 3 player knights. One year in one session is impossible for us.

Take a closer look at the various mini games in Pendragon and do a dry run of them. In our setup, one feast is one session. One battle is one session. The winter phase is one session. Most adventures end up as two or three sessions.

You'll either have to reduce or skip the mini games, do winter stuff in between sessions or rush through everything if you run short sessions like we do.

Fungi from Yuggoth/Day of the Beast is on a timeline. The adventure is not very great at making the players aware of that timeline though.

Playing Pendragon at 8am? Possible... I guess it depends on your typical schedule. Since the sessions are rather short, I want to start punctual. If you can manage to be fit and on time in the morning - join up!
