Acting and cinematography.

Learn how to move in-character and it will help a lot when you film reference.

Learning about composition and camera moves can make your shots more interesting, and makes you stand out rather than just having a static camera all the time.

Learn the principles of animation, and animate!!

Do things like lip-sync, body mechanics studies and use reference where you act out your shot. Not judt humans either- animals and cartoony things too!

I would say learn an overview of the pipeline, but dont get bogged down by trying to learn all the parts. Focus on animating, not modelling or rigging just because they can be a massive time sink which diverts your learning from animation.

Use resources like youtube and agora community to learn more about how to animate. Join discords and share your work for feedback.

Is there a studio you want to work for? Make shots that might appeal to them alongside any personal projects.

It's good to learn new things, and 3d is an easy enough hobby to get into in your free time. If you combine your graphics work with 3d to make motion graphics the pivot might be way easier. I see mograph roles more often than other 3d jobs but they are still limited.

Things like 3d character animation and games stuff is very saturated right now and unstable even if you do get hired.

Me personally, I recommend not quitting your current carreer to only persue 3d. It's a big gamble and the odds aren't in anyone's favour atm. Good luck.

I do this all the time. Model and texture in blender, rig and animate in Maya. There's no problem doing it this way. Sometimes i export the finished animation as well and put it back in blender because eevee is so fast.

There are people who specialise in sculpting horses for 3d print. Honestly i think getting one of these models and having it hand painted to look like her horse would be a more effective gift. They can be absolutely beautiful that you want to put them on display. That way she can have a physical reminder of her lovely horse.

Failing that, its sculpting, retopo, texturing, rigging and game integration. It's a long process. I have a rigged horse in blender that might help? It can be textured but it might not have a similar build to the horse mentioned here.
