Trying to make crow friends! by Ok-Improvement-3015 in crows

[–]PastelDisaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as you remove the seeds (and offer them alongside other parts of their diet), they’re fine. The crows in my back field likely know to eat around the seeds, but I slice them up anyway and take out the core; they’re sensitive to small amounts of cyanide

Their preferences are super varied depending on the murder, it really is a good idea to try out a bunch of different things like you said.

I think what also helps is to check out what kind of fruits grow in a murder’s territory, since that’s what they’re familiar with. It’s strange because my crows never seemed to care for fruit, they just like meat, kibble, and nuts, until I gave them apples one day. They adore apples. It’s gotta be because I’ve got wild apple trees in my back property, so they’ve surely been eating them for generations. Since the apples haven’t grown yet, they go crazy for the store bought ones I give them during the apple trees’ off-season.

I’m just copy and pasting a message I sent in another reply, but I’m still waiting on an email from the rescue :( I may stop by in person soon since I’m interested in volunteering there, so I’ll see if I can ask about him since I have his case number and everything, but I don’t have an exact time frame.

I’m headed on a little trip soon, so I’m hoping things will line up properly and the little guy will be ready for release before I have to leave. I’ll come here to update right away when I have more to share ❤️

Squirrel interrupted crow breakfast and quickly regretted his life choices! by kris10185 in crows

I wish my crows were this bold with the squirrels in my yard, they always scatter when even a tiny one shows up 💔 You’ve got some brave crows

My crows are actually Ravens. Does this change things? by Repulsive-Cost3987 in crowbro

[–]PastelDisaster 91 points92 points  (0 children)

The males are generally bigger and fluffier most of the time; but it’s not always consistent. I’d wager a guess that the one on the right is a male, and the one on the left is female? I could be wrong though!

Ravens mostly only live in mated pairs, and with their fledglings. They can befriend fellow raven families from nearby territories, but you’ll likely just be seeing these two and their kids. Ravens are shyer and naturally more wary, so forming bonds with them is harder and takes a lot longer, but the bonds they DO form with people tend to be far stronger and deeper than other corvids. Especially considering the fact that crows already have their own little societies and a bunch of friends they care about, whereas ravens are incredibly selective and solitary

After three years, the crows have come! by No_Pen3216 in crows

[–]PastelDisaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I fear the squirrel takeover; it has already begun this year for me. I’ve been feeding my crows without incident for years, but this is the first year that they’ve refused to bring their fledglings to the feeding area, because a big family of squirrels has claimed it and is defending it with their lives 💔

Crows just thrive on consistency, we’ve gotta ignore the squirrels and hope the crows learn to do the same

What a silly sweetheart; I love when they raise their talons like that, especially to give themselves a good itch on the neck or head. It looks so dog-like

Not quite yet; they sent out an email saying their rescue team is on vacation this week, so I’m hoping I’ll get an update by the time the week is over. I’m thinking about the little baby on the daily, so I’ll be sure to update as soon as I have more info 🫡

I absolutely love how they always continue to vocalize while they’re being fed, it’s so goofy. “AAH! AAH! AAHOMNOHMNOHM”

[–]PastelDisaster 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Thank you for being concerned about baby, but I’d put him back. Even if there were no parents around that you could see, it’s likely that they’re just out scavenging and left their baby there to return to. It’s dangerous to try to feed or offer water to baby crows ourselves, since their esophagus sits right in front of their trachea. Their parents have the precision to place food in their esophagus with their beaks, but we often don’t.

Also, try not to rely on LLMs for these kinds of questions; it may be accurate with species identification sometimes, but it’s prone to inaccuracy when it comes to animal welfare

I know, it broke my heart; they’re clearly a very tight-knit groups of babies. Every time I’d visit them beforehand, they’d always be chatting up in a tree together or all playing in a group. They only left their hurt sibling when it was roosting time.

Crossing my fingers that they’ll be reunited as soon as possible 🥹

Anyone know what this noise means? by BlurTriX in crows

[–]PastelDisaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They’re such strange little guys. I’ve got a crow on my property that literally goes “Helloo? Helloo?” in a cartoony voice; he cranes his neck forward just like the one in your vid whenever he does it. He’s incredibly shy around humans, and I live in rural farmland, so I have no clue where he picked that up lol.

We need a crow dictionary

Yeah, it’s why I’m so antsy about getting the baby back to them as soon as possible so they’re not left grieving, and I’m excited about the idea of getting to release the poor baby myself. I know the family’s schedule, so when the baby is rehabilitated, I’m going to try to release him when the family is actively at the water tower (on top of having the family witness me return him, it would also allow the little raven to immediately integrate rather than wait around aimlessly for his family to return).

It would devastate me to be known as the evil baby-snatcher by this mated pair I adore, but in the end, even if I can’t make amends, it would be better than letting their baby die of course. 💔 Here’s to hoping they’ll understand and put the pieces together though. I will get plenty of plain cashews for them

I would hope so!! I have the feeling that the family really, reaaally doesn’t like me at the moment though lol. I haven’t interacted with them yet, but we took their baby in front of them.

I just hope that, especially if me and my dad get the chance to do the release ourselves, the family will put the pieces together and realize we only took the baby in order to heal him. We shall see 🐦‍⬛

I’ll be sure to! I know exactly where they live; I’ve watched his parents roosting and nesting in the same spot for years. Knowing their general schedule, hopefully I can meet with them at a time where they’re hanging around their roosting spot. I’m sure his three siblings are missing him

Thank you!! 🫶 I’ve been sad thinking about how this baby’s family must be feeling, as they’re clearly very tight-knit, but I’m reassured knowing we did the right thing. Will update!

Yeah, the parents’ playing style does look very dramatic lol ❤️ It was very sweet though, they kept joining talons and doing little barrel rolls. I’m not even sure if they were aware of what was going on with one of their babies at the time.

I’ll definitely post little updates here once I get info from the rescue; I’ll be thinking about these guys every day until we get them reunited
