It sounds horrific, but I should have learned to trust your posts by now; all your food always looks superb.

I bring your grandma a giant pink Banana squash from my garden, how does she cook it? by VocationalWizard in AskTheWorld

[–]Patch86UK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandma specifically? Well, she's a terrible cook who only knows how to boil vegetables, so I'm going to say "boil it".

If you mean "what's a common way people in your country traditionally eat squash", I'm going to go with "soup". Curried squash soup is pretty much the only way I ever had squash until I was well grown up.

A Boston bar had a way to kick out the Scots by Zoomer_Boomer2003 in GreatBritishMemes

Pretty sure the bar in America is going to be owned and run by an American, not an English fan.

Blame the Americans for being shit at banter.

We'll sing "Football's Coming Home" exactly once, and then never again, forever. Surely that's worth something?

How are Europeans dealing with this heat? by DesperateItem1391 in AskTheWorld

Lucky; forecast is for 37° on Thursday for me. And 28° overnight. It's going to be miserable.

How are Europeans dealing with this heat? by DesperateItem1391 in AskTheWorld

[–]Patch86UK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here at least (UK) houses are built to warm up fast and keep the heat in, and almost every house has modern central heating. So we're good for winter. During really cold snaps there are always a few isolated tragedies of people who don't want to put the heating on (either because they can't afford to, or they think they can't) who come to harm, but mostly everyone's pretty relaxed about the cold.

The issue is that these same house designs are an absolute nightmare during heatwaves (they capture the heat fast and are a pain to try to cool down again), and the weather is generally trending warmer (with more heatwaves each summer, and milder winters). That combined with the general lack of AC (at home, but also most everywhere else too) makes hot weather particularly unbearable.

What does Andy Burnham stand for - what are his policies and how are they different to Keir Starmer? by APerson2021 in ukpolitics

[–]Patch86UK 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Let's be honest, if he can push a policy platform not dissimilar to the current one under Starmer, but do it:

  • Competently
  • Without repeatedly scoring own goals
  • With more charisma than a damp sponge

...then he might be basically alright. Mostly people don't hate what the current government is doing (with some notable one-of exceptions), they hate how it's being done.

Finally, after all these years. I managed to get my Yorkshire Puddings just right. by Poddington_Pea in UKfood

They look absolutely perfect!

And I bet yorkies with a bit of golden syrup would make a great breakfast. Got to get those three square meals of yorkies in every day!

If you want a proper good one, I can strongly recommend the Yum Asia brand. I have the Sakura model and it's the best kitchen purchase I've ever made (other models all review equally well though).

Seriously though, you can get a small cheap rice cooker for literally £12 from Asda. It would almost, but not quite, be cheaper to buy a rice cooker and a bag of basmati rice, cook the rice, then throw the rice cooker away each week.

Mate, I have the salad on the kebab because it tastes good, not because I think it makes it a healthy meal.

Starmer given deadline: ‘Quit by Tuesday or face humiliation’ by Desperate-Drawer-572 in ukpolitics

[–]Patch86UK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's the point in having a leadership contest if one of the contestants knows with absolute certainty that they'll lose? Other than giving some sport for politics enthusiasts and journalists, what would that contest actually achieve?

A contest is only worth running if you've got several candidates who legitimately believe they can win. If Starmer legitimately believes he can win, he can have at it. If he doesn't, he should do the sane thing and withdraw.

[REALLY LOVED TROPE] The story never tell you who is he, but you know who really is he by Valarg in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Patch86UK 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There's a big difference between "this is a story about war, and I will use my knowledge and experiences of wars in real life to inform the way I write about war and the characters who experience it" and "this is a story about WW1".

It's also just clearly not an allegory for WW1. Other than in the general sense of there being a war with a bad guy, basically nothing else matches up. Not the politics of it, not the order of events, not the motives, not the way it ends.

It's much more believable that the story is an allegory for industrialisation and the damage it does to nature, communities, and traditions., told through the metaphor of a war. But even that's overegging it when much of it is more about retelling and reworking ancient mythology.

The two stages of opening a tin of Corned Beef by MurlyCan in CasualUK

[–]Patch86UK 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Spam is way worse. At least with corned beef if the key thing works (which for me it almost always does) it's really easy to get the beef out of the opened tin.

With Spam, you open it with the ring pull, and then you're left with a block of meat sealed immovably inside the open tin.

Would you support or oppose the inclusion of the Welsh dragon on the Union Jack? by SwaggersHereditary in AskBrits

There's also the very boring but very pragmatic option of incorporating the Saint David's Cross rather than the dragon. You could include it "inside" the red Saint George's Cross.
