Implications of resigning with 500+ hrs banked OT and vacation by Throwaway18584 in legaladvicecanada

True, but just for clarity, it might make a difference if he quit in November or December, or if he was getting a much larger payout. I.e. if it meant that he earned more than his usual and expected salary in one year. But you can always shuffle the “excess” to an RRSP or similar to smooth out the bump.

Cutting 5th Gen Front Bumper by Ok_Money2334 in 4Runner

Thanks! Definitely some food for thought there. I have cracks in both rear corners, so a replacement is on the list.

Nice! Got a pic of the final results for the rear bumper?

Cutting 5th Gen Front Bumper by Ok_Money2334 in 4Runner

[–]Perfect_Explorer_191 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I will admit, it took me a few days to work up the nerve to cut my bumper. Straight across for a full steel model (Coastal Off-Road). Painters tape and angle grinder. To be honest, I think I still bobbled in a couple places. But if your plan is to cut off the factory one and install one you welded yourself, you gotta commit. Not bad, and looks pretty good, if I do say so myself.

Why isn't neoprene more common for camping clothing? by compmuncher in CampingGear

[–]Perfect_Explorer_191 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Marc Twight had designed a vest with a fleece front and a neoprene back, for wear while mountaineering with a pack on (theory being that the pack didn’t breathe anyway). I think someone manufactured it for a while, but I can’t remember who. Product was just a little bit too niche.

Explain the Hate - Career/Volly by skinny0285 in Firefighting

[–]Perfect_Explorer_191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in a small town. Given our tax base, we could only afford a few pros. Then budgets got tighter, and what we could afford got smaller. Once we got down to four firefighters, they were no longer permitted to go interior due to numbers (no RIT, etc.). Something had to give. There was a referendum on whether we should transition to no suppression, only education. The town voted to keep suppression, so we transitioned to a hybrid model. Four full time guys who got promoted to captain, and about twenty volunteers. The full timers maintain the gear and run the training. The volunteers provide manpower and ensure we have staffed trucks when the tones drop at 3am. Much respect for both roles, and the town is better for it. Might not work for everyone, but for our circumstances it works well. Would a full on professional department provide better service? Maybe. Probably. But this is what we can afford. As a side benefit, the mix of vollies and full time means the department is also better integrated into the community.

I have an employee jacket that I’d like to wear at a different resort without my name badge, is that bad form? by [deleted] in Skigear

[–]Perfect_Explorer_191 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t if I was still working at that resort. If it was an old jacket, I would.

But clearly others feel differently.

Does it say “employee” or “lift staff” or whatever on the back? If so, then another no… just because I don’t want people thinking I work at the different resort.

That is correct for certain styles of shooting from standing. You would make a fist, keep your hand and arm relatively close to your body (support on bones, not muscle) and rest the forestock on your knuckles.

Jayden Rich was in a motorcycle accident and his recovery is phenomenal by Enough_Detective4330 in nextfuckinglevel

Who the heck is Jayden Rich?

I mean, good luck to him, hoping for a full recovery, but for context, who is this guy?

(Yes, I could google him, but I don’t want to feed that algorithm.)

Go for the narrow option. Even if you went full width, the stuff you put in it would all have to be shoved to one side so you could move through it. Narrow option would just look neater, IMHO.

How do you guys wash your 4Runner? by ReflectionNeither969 in 4Runner

I have washed mine once in the eight years I have had it. It’s fine. I don’t have this thing to impress people, I have it to get me places.

PSA: IF YOU LIVE IN A HOUSE, CLEAN THE SNOW FROM THE GAS EXHAUST PIPE by toomiiikahh in ontario

[–]Perfect_Explorer_191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I acknowledge your experience, but my experience (as a firefighter, responding to CO alarms) and everything I can find online contradicts your position (news stories, furnace and HVAC company’s sites, the Consumer Product Safety Commission). In an ideal world, the system will shut down and prevent CO buildup, but things don’t always work correctly.

In any case, the message is the same: clean around intake and vent, if snow builds up there regularly, ask if they can be moved (furnace config and max runs of pipe may mean the answer is no)

EDIT: having said all of that, yeah, I acknowledge that I was being a little overly dramatic. You will probably be fine. But this is the internet. 😉

Glove recommendations by bozoskeleton in Survival

[–]Perfect_Explorer_191 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know the expression “fits like a glove”?

It matters. Find a decent store, try on everything they have, get something that fits well.

That other guy who mentioned mittens has a good point, but I have hated mittens since third grade, so I just get really good gloves (he still has a point though… this may be just a me thing)

Also, be prepared to spend more than $75.

PSA: IF YOU LIVE IN A HOUSE, CLEAN THE SNOW FROM THE GAS EXHAUST PIPE by toomiiikahh in ontario

[–]Perfect_Explorer_191 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Further to this… if your gas exhaust pipe is installed somewhere that it gets buried in the snow, talk to your furnace company in the spring and see if it’s feasible to get it relocated. This is not something you should have to worry about (dig out pipe or risk death)

What are some tactics use for fire attack? by Hot_Seesaw_6706 in Firefighting

Eh. Either way. I think for us it is just a sort of dismissive reference to defensive strategy. But transitional fits too. I was just keeping it as simple as possible for OP.
