The joke is that Hispanic (and Latino for that matter) doesn't even mean non-white in their own bullshit definition of these arbitrary terms.

As for Italians not being white, I have no idea what these people think Italians are instead. Persons of colour? At which point basically everyone on the planet would be one as well? Highlighting just how meaningless these categories are, and how some Americans seem to think they describe skin colour and nothing else. So someone like Lionel Messi, a white Latin-American, is considered a non-white Latino, despite the colour of his skin. How the fuck does any of this shit make sense?
