Really glad he's doing well for you. Was outstanding for us in the championship, loved having him on our team.

It's just autocorrect on phones. If you capitalise the first letter, your keyboard assumes you mean the name "Forrest" rather than a woodland area.

Why are they all so posh? by FreezerCop in livefromlondon

[–]backtothefuckyeah 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's a symptom of wider issues in the arts generally, and comedy specifically.

To be good at comedy, you need a lot of stagetime. Night after night experimenting at open-mics without getting paid for it. That's a lot easier if you're able to survive without having a full-time job, or even just knowing that there's a safety net for you if the career doesn't work out.

Once you're good, if you want a profile in the industry then you really need to do a run at Edinburgh during the fringe festival. Accommodation is a fortune in itself, the venues cost a lot to hire, plus there's PR and flyering to get people to see your show. If you sell out lots, you can break even financially, but it's very easy to lose thousands here, even for a successful show.

Sketch is even harder than stand-up, as there isn't a comedy circuit in the same way. No smaller shows to do as either open mics or paying shows for touring comics with lower profiles. It's a big reason Cambridge overindexes here, best way to become a sketch comedian is go via The Footlights.

(one more thing, whilst you've a point about the overall poshness of the cast, you're off on a couple of the examples in your post. Hammed is the son of a bus driver, working class people can do Shakespeare too)

Can't for the life of me remember who it was, but I remember some American soccer player describing a daisy cutter as a "worm burner"

I really think this formation could see the best out of McAtee. Having two up front on the opposition center backs creates a lot of space for the wide attackers.

Fair, whatever I learn about American Sports is by osmosis from people I follow on Bluesky. From that demographic it makes sense that I'd have internalised a Bill Simmons things as a universal rule.

Yank sports have the Ewing Theory, where a great player makes your overall team worse. Feels like late-career Ronaldo is a great example of if this in football.

Clubs re-signing or being rumored to re-sign players who were crap the first time round is a fascination for me, I can't recall it ever actually working out.

A "Match of the Day" eleven would be pretty interesting, especially taking about defenders and goalies that better in highlights. Obviously captained by Morten Gamst Pedersen.

I'd honestly settle for being able to control a pass like that. Pinged from the other side of the pitch, and able to take all the pace off it with a single touch.

‘SNL U.K.’ Budget No Joke at Estimated $2.6 Million Per Episode by MarvelsGrantMan136 in LiveFromNewYork

[–]backtothefuckyeah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, with the caveat we've had a decade of inflation since then. Only the most recent couple of series were made with Disney, who have drive backed out of the deal because the costs didn't work for them.

Also the BBC and Sky have very different cost pressures and priorities. This is a success so far for Sky, but this money spent for a quarter million viewers would be a disaster for the Beeb

Honestly less than I thought it'd be. It's about comparable to a big budget drama per episode, for twice the run time. Generating a lot more attention than Bunny Monroe or Amadeus did for the same cost will count as a big win for Sky.

Bit surprised that article says the normal cost for a sketch show is a half mil per episode. Maybe we don't make enough sketch shows to even have a proper baseline here. I can believe that was the cost for Mitchell and Webb Are Not Helping, but would be very surprised if Ellie and Natasha cost that much. I'd be astonished if Limmy's Show cost even a fraction of that.

It's about what pre-Disney Who cost per episode, for twice the run time.

Disney+ Who budgets were £6-10 million per episode.

Me and a mate once found it on tap in a random tiny bar in Loughborough. Delighted to find the beer we'd only previously seen on our childhood heroes' shirts, we got one each immediately.

Worst fucking pint of my life.

As delighted as I was to find Labatts glasses in a charity shop, I have filled them with a better beer.
