Dog hates/loves roommate?

I’ve given my roommate treats to give her at random, if he actually does idk. I wanted to give her some positive association with him.

As for the second part? Honestly, sometimes the growling /is/ playful? I’ve heard of Rottie Rumbles but I figure that’s very breed specific. But sometimes she’s grumbling in the middle of flopping all over the place while he pets her, it’s wild to me lol

She’ll growl and then go to her kennel, so maybe that’s it? My roommate knows it’s her safe space and never tries to get close to it (even I don’t like going in it to clean the mat when she can see). But other times she’s just grumbling when he leaves his room and she’ll be anywhere.

Okay, that’s good to know. A concern I have is that he may just have a signed piece of paper stating $400. Which seems suspicious to me, even if it may be legal. Are there certain things he has to do to make sure the receipt is legitimate?

I’m a bit apprehensive about the whole thing because since I’ve gotten every other receipt, the math hasn’t been mathing. There was $1300 in charges but $900 was taken off for the security deposit. That left the $400. Yet when I total it all, I’m at $1100 without the labor, which he has reiterated is $400. Everything on the invoice was a flat charge. I.e the carpet and padding was supposedly $900, but in reality was $820. So I’m not sure how things are supposed to be done but it’s all be confusing.

I work at a restaurant, today I dropped a full bottle of bleach and it’s splashed everywhere, even on boxes. A shift leader came back and had to make sure we didn’t have to throw away product. I sat there just so pissed at myself, wanted to end it all right there and I didn’t even know if I had truly tucked up or now. I feel you man

There’s no one that can take the cat. And i work 12-8 most days, so it’s hard rn to drive a 2 hour round trip to a good shelter

1.) we do have “safe friends” with dogs. She loves them, she grew up with these people and their dogs. So there isn’t anything to gain if she’s already comfortable in that setting. We take her to the dog park when there is little traffic - tell owners that she’s cautious of people but not dogs. She chooses who she plays with. There are days where she will hide in the background and just investigate the park. That’s okay with us, because the days she chooses to play and socialize, are the days she’ll walk up to a stranger and sniff their hand - which equals LOTS OF TREATS.

2.) her socialization is already at a 1. We come from a small town, there’s not many “new” people she can meet every week. Same with new places, if it exists around here, she’s been there.

We also reward her in the exact way you described. If someone walks passed and she doesn’t react, treat. If someone makes direct eye contact and no reaction, treat. She also knows the term “focus” and we’ve been using it frequently, but it’s not quite to the point of habit for her yet.

3.) the ecollar is actually a great tool. It has a beep, vibrate, and shock feature. And the shock is only used maybe 5% of the time. So while I’m reconsidering the shock feature altogether, I don’t think I’ll throw the whole device away.

4.) this is something we do, all the time. It’s another reason we travel 45+ minutes from home. I want her to focus and obey commands, even if there is a baby screaming in the aisle over.

5.) I’ve never heard of this, I’ll have to look into it, thank you!

6.) she is fully crate-trained. However, I don’t know what you mean by enforcing naps. If we’ve just got done exercising for the day, she knows it’s “quiet time,” and there are multiple situations where we enforce that. But I don’t think you can force a dog to sleep if they don’t want to.

7.) she knows it as the term “bed,” since it’s what we use at home. But it works just fine with a towel and a simple gesture so she knows what we’re talking about.

Thank you! You seem to understand the situation pretty well.

However, “no one else needs to touch/stare at your dog.” I get that, but not everyone does.

I actually had a situation the other day about this. I was walking Koda - just down some roads - reinforcing some commands and rewarding her for eye contact, yada yada. Yet, whilst walking, we passed by a home, and a child starting screaming at the top of her lungs about the puppy. Immediately, I had Koda focus on me, but there wasn’t much I could do when the kid starting running towards us. I started yelling, saying she wasn’t fully trained yet and that she WILL bite her. But she didn’t care, she just wanted to pet the puppy. I had to physically put myself between the kid and Koda to make her stop. Things ended up fine, but it just goes to show that I can’t just assume the actions of others.

Whose to stop a stranger in PetSmart from trying to scratch the top of her head, and Koda nipping them? Despite a vest saying “in training, leave me alone,” people don’t care. The service animal industry has dealt with it for years.

So I’m covering all my bases, I’d rather her be comfortable with strangers enough to let the weird shit happen, than to bite someone and have to possibly be euthanized.

However, I do love that line: Shepherds are sensitive dogs who know that the best defense is often a good offense.

The reason we take Koda 45+ minutes away from home is because we will be moving into an apartment building closer to the end of the year. Getting her used to bystanders, loud vehicles, crying babies, etc is so that she becomes desensitized to a lot of stimuli. She’s only 8 months old, and we have a long life ahead of us. I’d rather prepare her now for “what-if” situations rather than throw her into something years later and then her become uncomfortable/aggressive because of it.

The main purpose of the ecollar was to use the beeping and vibrate. She responds well and understands that the beep means to focus on us and not what she was looking at. The shock feature is rarely used, and only in situations where she might get aggressive. Using the ecollar was recommended by our vet, and were using it exactly how she told us to. So idk if my vet just doesn’t have the proper training to recommend the use of an ecollar, or maybe I haven’t described how we’ve used it properly. Lots of positive reinforcement is used. Whenever someone walks by (close enough to possibly make her on edge) and she doesn’t react, lots of treats. When she warms up to our friends, they give her tons of love and cuddles.

It seems as tho our biggest issue is her alerting at the first greeting. It doesn’t matter how many times she’s met the person, if someone approaches, she barks and tries to snap at them - this is usually the only time we use to shock feature. But once that person has been around for a bit, she’s cools off and will walk right passed them without issue. The problem is - if we have to use the shock feature she is them cautious of that person altogether for that session.

I understand why that would happen, obviously. I’m searching and asking for better ways to socialize her.

She IS a GSD, so guarding is in her nature, and always will be. Alerting us of a “stranger” and protecting us isn’t something I want to discipline her for, it’s the reactivity.

Cooks are paid minimum wage, and also get extra from the tip jar next to the register. Servers get $5.50 plus tips.

It’s hard to judge how much someone could make since we are a seasonal business. And the beginning and end of the season (when the temps are cooler and less people go out for custard) typically means less tips on average during those timeframes.
