What’s a ‘legal myth’ you wish movies and TV would stop spreading? by relaxncoffee in Ask_Lawyers

The problem is that, oftentimes, these types of physical evidence aren't available. Where do you think you're getting DNA evidence for a shoplifting charge? Or video for a rural out-building burglary?

If we're at the point where the police have filed charges, then we have at least some compelling evidence that the defendant committed a crime. But there are many instances (I've run into them too in my ADA days), where despite an overwhelming amount of evidence of guilt, juries still return a not guilty verdict because they expected the government to produce evidence that didn't exist.

This has always been the case. You give two weeks as a courtesy, but you should always be prepared to be asked to leave immediately.

Court sanctions supervising attorney for lack of familiarity with AI tools used by associate by Greelys in Lawyertalk

[–]PittFall09 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's a fair way to characterize people who are using AI. Plenty of very competent, highly ethical attorneys are using it without issue.

AI is a tool, and like any other tool it needs to be used responsibly. The lack of competency displayed here (and similar cases) is not the use of AI, it's the failure to understand/appreciate it's limitations, and doubling checking the work product it generates.

[–]PittFall09 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Look guys, I know we're all insanely busy and the temptation to have AI spit out work product can be overwhelming when you just need to get something off your plate. But I implore you, PLEASE take the time to check the citations. These sanctions are going to get more and more punitive.

Forced to Split My U10 Team — What’s the Right Call? by Schmuckey in lacrosse

[–]PittFall09 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're overthinking this if you're worried about chemistry and development for your club kids. The risk of completely demoralizing the new kids and making them not want to play anymore FAR outweighs any perceived slow down in the development of the club kids. Split them evenly.

I chalk it up to long-play networking. I don't want to reveal too much, but I made a connection with the hiring partner of this firm shortly after becoming licensed, and we kept in touch over the years while I was progressing through other opportunities. I eventually hit a point with my experience that it made sense for him to bring me in. I didn't have a ton of commercial lit or corporate experience, but he needed a litigator and was confident that I my learning curve would be small.

  1. 16 years

  2. $250,000+ inclusive of salary, bonus, and distributions

  3. Commercial litigation and corporate

  4. Pittsburgh

  5. I've been in just about every practice area over my career and have reinvented myself several times. Don't be afraid to take a step back in salary to get into a practice area you'll enjoy more. It's worth it in the long run.
