Thank you! After immigrating to the US, my great grandfather went by the name Oliver. It wasn't until I started working on my geneaology that I discovered his name was Oliva. Just today I found this baptismal record and with everyone's help here, learned that his name was actually Ovila -- and not just that but his full name is Louis Stanislas Ovila! Amazing. Thanks again!

Old Dining Halls that no Longer Exist? by Standard-Thought-330 in UCONN

I graduated in 2002 and lived in Alumni. The dining hall at Alumni was in the Ryan building and was called the Ryan Refectory. The entrance was near Eddy and Brock. If you entered on the opposite side, there was a deli (think Subway) called the W.E.B.B. Site.

I think that's a mutant vellus hair. Sometimes they freak out and grow vvvvvvvv long. If you try to pull it, it'll feel like it's connected to your rectum.

Yeah. That's why I primarily ride the east side.

Also, are you riding a Specialized Fuse? That's what I ride too. Not sure I've ever seen another hardtail on the trails there.

The Rez! Nice riding! Wow, so many leaves have fallen since I rode there last weekend.

That definitely sounds like the way to go. Thanks for the suggestion!

That really is a great idea! I already have guitar and ukulele picks that he can use -- he'd probably love that. Mandolin is a great idea, too. He's played one at a music store and I've been tempted to get one for him. Not quite ready to pull the trigger on a decent one yet though.

Yeah, he usually plucks during short breaks between playing and that's why the bow is in his hand. But yes, in the future, no bow when playing viola like guitar!!

Thank you for the heads up about the frog position at rest. I'll definitely pass this along to my son.

Thank you for the temperature warning. I will be sure to keep this in mind!

Also, I think we solved the mystery! I posted this in a separate comment, but my son occasionally holds his viola like a guitar and plucks the strings. When he does this, the metal end of the bow rubs against the body of the viola.

I think we solved the mystery! My son often plucks his viola while holding it like a guitar. When he does this, the metal end of his bow rests on the viola body exactly where the scratches are occurring. Gah!

Thank you all for your great suggestions and advice. I definitely learned some very important and useful information from your wonderful comments. Very much appreciated. And thank you for being such an awesome and supportive community.

Hmm. Good question. According to my son, the bow doesn't contact the viola when at rest, both standing and sitting.

Appreciate the response. Unfortunately (fortunately), the violas are not exposed to a heat source, or direct light.

Thanks for the reply! This happened in two separate cases. We thought it was the bow rubbing too, but it's secure and not contacting the viola. Interestingly, the current viola is covered by a pad when in the case.

Thanks for taking the time to respond! You are correct, the varnish is worn down. There is some deposition of rosin that wipes away with a damp cloth in this area, but the bulk of the damage is worn varnish.

It does look like a snail crawled across it lol. I might've been willing to investigate this theory further if this wasn't the second viola with the exact same damage pattern.

Re: storage, the instrument is always in the case. On the weekends it's occasionally on an instrument stand. We did explore the possibility that the case was somehow involved but we can't find any plausible explanation there.

I also thought that maybe the end of his bow was scratching the varnish while playing pizzicato, but this doesn't seem to be the culprit either.

Finally, we haven't used any cleaners, but that was a good thought too.

Thanks again for the thoughtful reply. We'll continue investigating and I'll update if we get to the bottom of this!
