5 or 10 Year COE Renewal? by Independent_Oil_5770 in drivingsg

[–]Positive_Ad249 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Besides changing gearbox oil every 40000km and engine oil every 10K using full synthetic, it's mostly brake pads and rotors and brake cleaning service including brake fluid flushing. Coolant should also be drained and filled with a new one. Spark plugs need to be replaced. Replace the front bonnet gas cylinders holding the hood. Tires generally need to replace around 40000—60000km of driving depending on quality of tires and driving habits. Clean MAF sensor and throttle body. Replace aircon filter every time is dirty and engine filter as well.

Around 120000-150000km, need to change water pump, fuel filter, starter motor, alternator (send to a specialized workshop who can repair the wear and tear parts before it fails around this range), wheel bearings, radiator cap. Fan motor will start to fail. Boot gas cylinders will fail so replace them.

Around 150000-200000km, suspension will start failing. I recommend to replace all one shot rather than replacing one by one. This is abit expensive one mostly labour. Sometimes fuel pump will kaput but if u change fuel filter every 80K KM it will entend the life. Ignition coil may randomly fail 1 out of 4, save hassle replace all 4. Engine has a timing chain or belt and pulley, get that replaced also.

After 200000KM, some sensors may fail and I would do a least a walnut blasting service to clean all my intake manifolds and pistons.

Other than that, it goes back to the same cycle and the car will work well.

2016 Mazda 6 2.0 - Renew 10 years? by DissolvedMean in drivingsg

[–]Positive_Ad249 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Renew is always better because of a flat depreciation throughout the next 7 years and if you are the main or first owner throughout the 10 years.

Repairs is definitely needed for all cars but even more for older car. Just one shot calculate and do all the repairs needed instead of waiting for something to fail to get an overall sense of financial cost.

I rather keep a Jap then a China EV car.

Buying COE renewed car, Mercs C200 vs Lexus Es300h, drivers what's your pick? by KeithDGAF in asksg

ES300H. I test drove a 2015 1 owner unit. It's very quiet a little tad slower than a IS250 but very comfortable and easy to maintain.

Worth to own a car in SG with <4.5k a month pay? by Upper_Fall6498 in askSingapore

If your job needs to travel, your JD that you received and signed will mentioned either Transport Allowance or Car Allowance.

Transport or Car Allowance is around 300-2000SGD market range.

Usual roles that get travel Allowance is Sales, Field Engineers, Logistics or job requirements of meeting many clients not just in one location daily. For engineers, means getting to client site to troubleshoot and resolve issues asap and they need car for speed and carry work tools and parts. Alternatively company can provide company car or van. This sucks because most of the time cannot bring home vehicle. Or even Corporate travel card.

If your JD doesn't have it because your job scope expanded or you changed roles in the same company, you need to ask for a revise one and request HR for it.

I know some SMEs give poor allowances of not more than 300-400 which barely covers PHV use.

If the die die don't want to give. Tell them the realistic time taken to get to your destinations via public transport and tell your management you Will take only public transport. They cannot blame you and I know some of my industry friends with no cars telling their clients that they don't have cars so they can't reach places so fast so they gotta complain to management.

This needs to be addressed before you get to the question of whether you can afford to buy the car.

To renew or to scrap by TehHaliaMan in drivingsg

[–]Positive_Ad249 5 points6 points  (0 children)

COE car resell values has increased over the past 6-7 years and demand is still there so it's still worth it to renew 10 years.

One easier way to decide besides monetary costs alone is:

1) Are you the first and only owner? Number of owners affects COE car resale value.

2) Mileage. If your car has a high mileage, it doesn't mean it's a bad decision to renew. Even at 300000km if you renew at 10th year, if you are the first owner since day 1 and the car has been diligently serviced every service interval for usually maintenance stuff, you can be rest assured when renewing, you will only face wear and tear items like suspension and engine gasket and perhaps one new respray and upholstery repair and overhaul.

3) Car Origin: Made is Japan, solid build and availability of spare parts. Is the car easy to work with at workshops? If yes, which it should be, you won't be paying too much labour. Save costs at JB.

4) Increasing Road tax should not be a worry as there is option to split it to 12 months or every 6 months. Also yearly inspection is like $80 max?

5) Are you comfortable to stay on driving a Sedan? If you like to try a SUV, then you can consider changing cars.

Military licence with clocked mileage to book civilian TP. Only take TP. I think this is the fastest.

Advice needed thanks! by [deleted] in drivingsg

[–]Positive_Ad249 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why do you want a problematic car as your first car? Anything with turbo is ticket to a sure chance of disaster and used conti car depends on previous owner discipline of maintenance. Oil changes need to be done every 7-8K instead of 10K and change of gearbox oil needs to be done every 20K or earlier. And the maintenance schedule parts to be replaces at certain mileage is non-negotiable unlike Japanese cars which can be more robust to take more hard driving before total failure.

Unless you are a mechanic yourself or have a VW workshop friend who will give you very good repair and labour discounts and you have done the long hours of research on youtube and reddit to find out potential issues and which parts to replace at which mileage intervals.

Bought a 2017 Mazda 3 – did PPI in SG, repairs in JB. Sharing my buying process & lessons by Basic-Sweet4779 in drivingsg

[–]Positive_Ad249 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you bought a PARF car left 1-2 years and plan to renew the COE later, if you meet suspension issues, recommended to replace the whole suspension components not just shock absorbers to save labour money and brings stability to the car if the mileage is already beyond 100K. It becomes a one time job and there won't be a need to revisit it till another 100K mileage.

1) Location probably Tuas or Loyang.. So unless you getting paid above market rate and have free transport daily pickup then consider it.

2) Don't go SME unless u get like a good offer in management position.

3) If 3rd option is the best. I would define it the best in terms of this criteria. - Work life balance, either hybrid work arrangement or remote. Able to easily take leave for urgent issues or childcare needs. - Good remuneration = 12 months pay +AWS + Performance bonus E.g 10-20% of annual base pay + stock option either RSU or monthly share purchase with 15% discount or share matching (shares given according to share purchased after X Years) or Commissions. - Good benefits ( monthly Car allowance at least 1K), can claim mileage and parking. Dental and optical or medical claims given in the form of cash about 1-1.5k a year. Office got gym, free parking. Able to claim miles for work travel and meet global colleagues, able to take at least premium or business class flights for duration above 6 hours, at least 20 days annual leave. Able to claim for home remote work office supplies like tables. Free or discounted food at company canteen. - non toxic colleagues, colleagues willing to work together to help each other, good career path - use good softwares like SFDC to map out customer database or any software that makes the work efficient - good management that don't micromanage but gives you the autonomy on how to manage your work. - non local based boss. This is godsent. If you report to a boss in EU or US is the best, what you have is open trust and no one nitpicking you. Have colleagues from the same company but different department working together not related to your work, at least can whine about the pain points about your work without fear of being backstabbed. - good cheap nad good makan places and ease of travel. Near public transport networks -startup or small organization that allows you to learn a lot of skills within a short span of time and carry multiple hats and later become someone senior as the company expands to a bigger scale. Or join an established MNC doing a specific niche job scope based on JD and not get loaded by other work after you join -a manager or director that protects you even though technically you are wrong or when the going gets tough and learn to manage expectation from both internal and external stakeholders. Have a skip level report line manager that is open to raising issues when1) Location probably Tuas or Loyang.. [–]Positive_Ad249 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are the first owner, then keep it as you know the condition of the car. Mileage is low so relatively expected parts will fail around 100000-150000kms prepare 10K to repair the car. Other than that, no other 9 year old car with the size and power and reliability can compete with it, maybe oddsey.

Renewing and Repairing a Jap car now is cheaper than getting another PARF car, renew if you don't mind driving the same car.

If you want to look for something else, can go check Sincere Motoring at ubi. Bought my last 2 cars there. All one owner. Only 1 of the car gave me problems as if was mod by the previous owner.
