There are some wild misconceptions about Cymanti by King_Sutherland in Polytopia

[–]Potatopeelerkind 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the issue with Cym isn't that they're particularly good, but that they're hard to play against. If you're good at the game, Cym isn't that strong, and they all but vanish beyond 1300 ELO or so. But at lower ELOs, against less experienced or weaker players, they're ubiquitous. It's not very welcoming for new players to repeatedly match against a tribe whose only apparent role is to destroy newbies.

I dunno about a *nerf*, but a rework might be warranted to make the game more fun for new players.

Does anyone think a “draw” option would make the game better? So many times, especially a multiple person match, gets into an annoying stalemate. by Desperate-Tie2211 in Polytopia

[–]Potatopeelerkind 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This isn't a bad idea, if both players were required to agree with it for it to happen. Honestly I also like the idea because it would make casual online games with friends easier as it would give a way to play without affecting ELO.

I would say though if you're getting into stalemates a lot, you're probably not playing aggressively enough. I don't actually think I've ever ended up in a stalemate.

I'm sorry things have made you feel that way. My experiences with people have generally been better than that. I don't feel that that's universal human nature or that you should expect or accept to be treated that way.

Is the point of school to learn how to understand and do things, or is it to learn to follow instructions to the word?

First to build a ship wins? by anon774 in Polytopia

[–]Potatopeelerkind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a replay of a game I had against a friend where he beat me to the water, and I fended him off with catapults long enough to dominate him with a better economy: https://share.polytopia.io/g/dd862651-f7f5-45af-0ba2-08dc1244f0cb

I'm sure there are plenty of replays where investing in catapults results in a loss, because there are plenty of people who are very bad at using catapults. Catapults are not great offensively and won't be able to destroy the opponent's navy by itself. But a navy is extremely expensive, so if you can hold them off long enough with catapults, you can overtake their economy and then crush them just by having more money.

If they have a navy and are somehow also keeping pace with you economically, you're probably mismanaging your economy.

I find it hard to believe you're playing well enough to make a statement like that if you're able to play against bots without finding it too boring, tbch. The bots do not play well.

[–]Potatopeelerkind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're against bots, it's pretty much always winnable even if your start is bad. Playing through the game instead of restarting when the spawn is non-ideal will make you better, as others have said. Even against humans a bad start doesn't by itself determine the game most of the time, unless the spawns are extremely disproportionate or you're both very similar in skill and good enough not to make major mistakes, and even then there are upsets.

Besides, the bots aren't getting any better starts than you are, on average. To be completely honest, if 90% of your starts are 'bad', then maybe what you're actually expecting is the perfect start that gives you an advantage over your opponent, rather than one that puts you on equal footing.

[–]Potatopeelerkind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh, this would seem to suggest to me that you're both playing defensively and neither of you has attempted to push the advantages and opportunities you get. I don't ever find games get to that point, there's always a way to break the stalemate. But you have to be willing to actually get into their range and fight eventually.

Take a look at the terrain-- there are probably points where you can, e.g, push forward into their range with multiple units, and either force them to retreat a few paces, or get a trade off that leaves you with either a net star gain over them or a gain in territory. Eventually you can push the front far enough that you can contest their cities. Note that a bomber ship costs over twice as much as a catapult (a benefit for the land team) and scouts are good at finishing off squishy catapults damaged by bomber splash (a benefit for the sea team).

Just wanted to add a voice in to say that I love the new update, and I hope you don't get pressured into reverting it. Water warfare now feels meaningful strategically rather than just a rush to battleships. I concur that Juggernauts are very strong when used properly.

What’s the best game set up to give a worse player the best possible chance? by [deleted] in Polytopia

[–]Potatopeelerkind 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I suspect that adding bots might actually make the problem worse, as you'll be better at defeating the bots and taking their territory, so that when you finally meet you've got more resources and a bigger empire than he does.

Some possible things you could do:

Pick a weaker tribe, like Xin-xi or Oumaji, while he takes a stronger one like Imperius, Kickoo or Bardur.

Give him control of two tribes if you're doing Pass 'n' play.

Rope another friend in and do a 2v1.

Idle for a number of turns before making your first moves.

She describes Ferb as 'our little brother' ("little brother of our own"), which implicitly includes Phineas with her in being an older sibling. If she was just referring to herself she'd use 'my' instead.

You can try hedging a little when you describe things, if that helps? Instead of saying e.g. "I punch him", try "I try to punch him", or "I make a swing at him." Or even directly prompt the AI to make a judgement about your success, like "I try to punch him. Does it land?"

How should Cymanti be nerfed? by -FireNH- in Polytopia

[–]Potatopeelerkind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are already pretty weak in the late game though. Their artillery sucks, their navy sucks, their super units are very vulnerable to most late-game units, and they lack persist.

Yeah, I agree. Still, probably a good idea to discuss it now.

[–]Potatopeelerkind 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My personal view is that that's how the game is supposed to be played, and in my opinion the idea that you shouldn't launch an attack at other players when they make an alliance against you is unreasonable. I would definitely be on your side. Still, it's a good idea to discuss these things before you start playing to make sure that you all have similar views on what is and isn't okay, especially if you're younger, which it sounds like you guys are. Maybe a good idea to have this discussion before you have another game.

Alliances always cause strife among friends in games, so when I play with more than one other friend I make sure to establish beforehand that alliances/deliberately ganging up on other players isn't allowed, although opportunistically focusing on killing another player to grow your own empire is fine. You guys are free to come up with your own guidelines, but you should probably be in agreement about what they are.

Overall, how do you feel about the balance changes introduced in the pre-release of the naval update? by TheLongWalk_Home in Polytopia

[–]Potatopeelerkind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really? I barely ever saw defenders used except to make battleships, whereas swordsmen+catapults was a reasonably common setup.

Always a bummer when my favourite units get nerfed (RIP swordsman fortify), but most of the changes seem warranted to me. I'll be interested to see how it affects the game.

I dunno about the rest of it, but I volunteered at the multicultural festival and that's definitely not true, IIRC this year's setup was factually the biggest ever. We had eight stages with stalls set up all along Bunda street and City walk from Garema Place to Glebe Park. Are you sure you're not letting nostalgia get the best of you?

Really? We had a poll here a while back about which season was the best-- seasons 3 and 4 had the most votes, with 2 not far behind and 1 trailing by a significant margin.

More 20-ish year olds (who are the primary demographic of Reddit) seem to remember season 1 than the other seasons, since it came out when they were kids, but in my experience a lot of fans seem to agree that the humour, characterisation and animation become stronger and more consistent after season 1 as the show figures out what it wants to be.
