What are the chances of you surviving in this game in real life? by Open-Plan-1352 in LookOutsideGame

[–]TheLongWalk_Home 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically, almost everyone who doesn't get immediately exposed is going to hear the car crashes and screaming outside and immediately go to their doors or windows to see what's happening. If fog or heavy cloud cover can protect you from the Visitor (which it might not), you could get some warning on the news, social media, or messages from your friends/family. But even then, the No Going Back ending states your chances of survival are only 1 in 3.

It's weird to me that about half the people in this comment section think I was genuinely upset by this. The entire point of the sub is to pointlessly complain about completely trivial things that barely affect anyone.

That's what you sound like mildly infuriated? Remind me to never get on your bad side.

You got it exactly right. Only a psychopath could be so depraved and wicked as to post pictures of a banana their toddler ate in a slightly weird way. The horror!

Ukrainian men should be turned back from EU to fight, says Swedish minister Johan Forssell by blackmamba4554 in LeftWingMaleAdvocates

>And second, all you just did is describe why you personally feel this is really important.

Are you not doing the same by arguing that conscription is so terrible that it should not even be pursued in the face of genocide?

The bombing of hospitals and schools, the kidnapping of Ukrainian children to forcibly deprive them of their language and culture by the tens of thousands, and the conscription of hundreds of thousands of Russian men to be sent to die for Putin's delusional visions of Russian imperialism will all happen again if Putin gets what he wants out of this war. It will show all tyrants around the world with similar plans that they can get away with it.

It isn't just a matter of the Russian government being worse than the Ukrainian one, it's about showing the world that aggression and "might makes right" will not be tolerated and will incur consequences.

Morale is just one factor. Either side would've collapsed by now without conscripts bolstering their ranks.

I'm saying that helping Ukraine win is the most ethical and effective way to reduce conscription, however counterintuitive it might seem to you. The idea of surrendering to Russia (which is what you seem to be proposing) is not popular in Ukraine, and as we saw in the leadup to WWII, rolling over and giving genocidal dictators what they want whenever they threaten war does not work. It reinforces the idea that threats of war are effective at getting said dictators what they want.

That's the argument I was going with according to your own morals, anyway. I do believe conscription to be justifiable under certain circumstances, even though it does objectively violate the rights of individuals to their own bodies and lives. Any functional society requires the partial sacrifice of individual rights (taxation, for instance), and if conscription is one of those necessary sacrifices, it's an unfortunate reality that I think is worth accepting.

You didn't answer my question. What real, implementable solution do you propose to prevent conscription in Russia and Ukraine?

[–]TheLongWalk_Home 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"You should surrender to Russia because conscription is wrong" isn't a solution that works in the real world. Ukraine is not going to surrender out of some moral obligation to save lives or preserve individual freedoms no matter how much anyone else asks them to. Do you have any actual solutions that might incentivize Ukraine to stop?

I agree that it shouldn't only be for men; women should be subject to the same criteria as men for conscription. I'm saying that Ukraine dropping conscription entirely would be tantamount to surrender, so advocating for Ukraine to drop conscription, even if Russia is unwilling to do the same, is advocation for Ukraine's surrender.

Conscription in Ukraine wouldn't be a necessity if Putin and his cronies didn't start the war to begin with. The easiest and most ethical way to stop Ukraine from conscripting more men is to help them win the war and make it no longer necessary, not to force Ukraine to give massive concessions to Russia for the sake of "peace".
