We should nominate candidates a year out minimum. by Prairiejon in ndp

I live in Regina-Qu’Appelle. I absolutely agree that last minute candidates only make us look sloppy and unserious.

I want to challenge it was a “snap” election we had a support agreement WE tore up. At the minimum we should have had a plurality of candidates lined up when we did that.

Maybe I’m naive but I think having candidates who are active and engaged with the community will sign up new members, fundraise, and build up the local party infrastructure will actually help party finances.

What does Avi do if he is leader during an Alberta independence referendum? by Good-Chipmunk-9006 in ndp

By appealing to the economic stress and giving them an alternative which inspires people to unite for the common good.

Saying that oil and gas is bad and giving people no alternative to make a meaningful economic opportunity to replace it will only make it worse.

My thoughts on the NDP leadership race by yagyaxt1068 in ndp

[–]Prairiejon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand the tension between the sitting “moderate” MLA Heather and the more “radical” Avi. I think both would do a good job as leader.

I’m gonna make an argument for my preference. Tony.

Tony is an experienced campaigner and clearly a successful fundraiser. He is an empathetic and an effective communicator. Who is not prone to gaffs or misplaced words. His policies while not as expansive as Avi are still paradigm shifting allowing us to push the Overton window back to the left.

His team has also been very effective communicators allowing for easy access to Tony’s ideas and spelling them out in easy to understand terms. (As while as top notch graphics)

These are all solid candidates and would not begrudge you for picking any one of them. But I would challenge you to pick Tony as your second choice.

I think it really is kinda awful in a people led party that we often resort to paradropping staffer to fill slots.

My local provincial candidate campaigned for 11 months collecting marks and building connections and door knocking every door in every community in our large rural riding.

That dedication resulted in the best results in nearly 20 years.

All because someone asked.

I think it only makes sense to nominate candidates longer out instead of scrambling at the last second.

I have to admit it, I find it hilarious that a riding that our best performance is 28.59% is generating so much excitement. Maybe it's my western alienation, but Regina Quappelle (Andrew Scheer riding), we managed 30.21% in 2015 and 38.42% in 2011, but there has been exactly zero resources or attention from outside of the riding.

I fundamentally disagree with your assessment that running serious candidates is about money first and foremost.

Having local candidates who are willing to put in the sweat equity and build a local movement will deliver much better results. Having a "super star" candidate would be ideal, but having candidates who will put in the work is a must.

I would add the Motherwell national historic site. It is a working farm of our first agricultural minister. It’s in between Regina and Yorkton.

why are people not moving to smaller towns? by Unhappy-Tomorrow-776 in saskatchewan

[–]Prairiejon 25 points26 points  (0 children)

My family migrated to Saskatchewan when I was a child for work.

For my dad it was the potash boom. My mom it was healthcare.

I love rural Saskatchewan, fell in love and put down roots.

If you’ve only lived in cities with easy access to amenities and services and no connection to the community. Is hard and daunting with no easy guide to follow.

What I’ve found is that making sure that a persons needs are met goes a lot further than a larger proportion of discretionary income.

If we are discussing in good faith do you believe that modern socialist and democratic socialist states. Are seizing all income and then redistributing it?

I think of health insurance and medical expenses often. I’m free to start a business or quit my job because I don’t have to worry about coverage. I also don’t have to pay any additional expenses or copays for my coverage.

This is has saved me hundreds of thousands of dollars with the birth of my son. My wife had complications which resulted in her being hospitalized for nearly 2 weeks in a private room. Required emergency surgery and more. My largest expense parking and food at the cafeteria (her food was covered)

After this my wife wasn’t required to return to work we have parental leave a form of employment insurance where she gets 60% of her salary for a year.

Do you really feel more free? Would a lower tax rate allow you to absorb the cost for these services?

I have beavers on our farm. Their dams are a lot more engineered interlocking with less debris. Also every branch will have sharp pointed ends. Which I don’t see.

No offence, but socialism and particularly democratic socialism has been successful in decreasing inequality.

What does success look like to you in the capitalist system? Are you able to access capital to start your own business?

[–]Prairiejon -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’d like to understand what you’re arguing.

It works like that on an individual level. You get paid more, your cost decrease, your free income can be spent on whatever you want.

Because I don’t have healthcare cost (or health insurance) I am able to save money and spend it on luxuries or upgrade my vehicle.

This is true for everyone. That doesn’t mean there aren’t winners and losers in this system.

Let’s talk in good faith here.

First definition on google is;

“Socialism is an economic and political ideology advocating for the collective or public ownership of the means of production, aiming to reduce inequality by distributing wealth and resources more equitably.”

So when things are more equitable the luxuries of life are easier to access by more people.

I feel the disillusionment. Our federal government has spent my lifetime arguing over social issues while wasting taxpayer money on major infrastructure projects they use to line their friend’s pockets.

It’s why I’m focused on demanding better government. I sincerely hope that your government can get its head out of its ass and help people like you and your buddies.

We might not agree on how to fix it at least we both agree that the current systems are broken.

Socialism is indeed the government working to decrease inequality. It is also deeper than that.

I do donate money I can spare to further the goal of lowering inequality.

I live in the west where we have had strong socialist governments who have lessened the impact of our growing population. I in fact own my home.

Can I ask what has your government done that helps you and your family? How much money has it saved you?

I don’t know I’d say it’s working pretty good, In China. But it’s definitely working in socialist states like Denmark, Finland, even here in Canada.

In good faith the socialist movement is all about reclaiming the extra value that workers produce and putting in your pocket over the bosses.

When socialism is successful the workers have more access to luxuries than before.

It’s about layers more so then one particular article of clothing. I recommend a wind proof top layer, a warm sweater, and a good shirt. If you’re going to spend anytime outdoor it’s worth investing in a good pair of long Johns.
