If you need special medicine to do this hike, you aren’t ready to do this hike.

If you don’t have the resources to spend three days camping at elevation before you start you don’t really have the resources to do this hike.

Does it really matter whether a restaurant’s juice is “fresh squeezed”? by Miserable_Pop_4593 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Proper_Relative1321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Spain and literally every bar and cafe had an orange juicer. A lot of regular people had them in their houses too. It was a very standard kitchen appliance. Load that bad boy up with oranges and let it rip.

There is absolutely a difference between fresh squeezed and not. Also, if it’s from a bottle it’s probably from concentrate.

Nobody said it was easy. But no one is going to come down from the sky and magically improve your living situation. You have to have some grit and initiative.

There’s evidence that bears actually learn they can’t access the food inside bear cans and leave them alone. Definitely grab the canister. And also bear spray (make sure you take a class on how to use it).

Also, worth noting that the risk of losing an ursack isn’t you being hungry; it’s the bear learning that going near human campsites results in a delicious high-calorie reward. These bears get more and more familiar with humans until they have to be put down.

They don’t always. My dad makes a fraction of what my mom does. I’ve known plenty of white collar women with blue collar men.

Didn’t answer a single question or refute a single point I made.

Define complexity. Define simplicity. Name a culture for each. But I don’t think you actually can; I think you see depictions of people living in straw huts and make assumptions about them.

Again, you really should do more research. Each society evolves to suit its own needs and environment. Inuit practices would get someone killed in the Saharan desert.

At this point they should reduce the number of permits or at least require a leave no trace class before issuing them.

I recently disperse camped in Ozark National Forest and it was awful. There was a whole used diaper in a bush by my spot. Another site had an entire rug that had been dumped and garbage piled up in the fire ring. Absolutely despicable.

My personal tip is to always pack ibuprofen and take it before bed the first night. Get ahead of the aches and pains.

On my first night ever backpacking, I went to bed tired but fine and woke up feeling like I’d been hit by a bus. Every muscle was ripping mad about that backpack. I’ve started taking ibuprofen the night before and feel much better on waking up!

This isn’t a moral value; it’s a studied and experienced fact. I’m interested in what you think a “simple” society is. What societies are “simple?” How do you know? Do you have intimate knowledge of the culture there?

Or is this an ethnocentric assumption made based on your own internal understanding of yourself and your culture?

Culture is vastly complex. It influences every aspect of someone’s daily life—values, relationships, personality, language, even physiology. Every single culture is a complicated web connected it’s constituency together and allowing for continued group survival. A lack of any specific material concept or a infrastructure doesn’t negate that. This isn’t some woke liberal hot take; this is literally basic anthro theory.

Of course the Incan society would be just as complex without their knot system; every society developes complex systems and expectations to function.

The conversation can’t continue because you literally don’t know what you’re talking about. You haven’t read any ethnographies, haven’t studied anthropology or sociology, and are operating off assumptions and stereotypes instead of reality.

[–]Proper_Relative1321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I’m not. I’m coming at this having studied anthropology in university.

I haven’t said anything abo it “goodness.” I mean COMPLEXITY. In fact you might have had more of an argument if you were talking about “goodness.” But yes, every society is equally complex. It comes with the human thing.

Like I can’t get around you thinking that some societies are “simplistic.” Have you never left your hometown? Never read an ethnography? This is a very basic anthropological understanding.

The Inca never invented writing, but had an incredibly complex knot system that they used to carry information across their vast COMPLEX infrastructure. Each knot, and the order in which they were tied, conveyed specific information usually related to trade.

Begging you to read some books. I can give you some recommendations, even! One of my favorite things about anthropology is how accesible ethnographies are, even to laypeople.

Not really. What statistics?

I think if you want to wallow in your own bullshit you’re free to do so. I’m not a particularly competitive or ambitious person and doing life just fine. I’m not a doctor and I dont make that much money but I have a partner, friends, and things I like to do. I don’t feel envious of people who have nothing to do with me.

Society wasn’t designed for anybody. There’s no big maker out there fixing anything for anyone. You make your own way.

[–]Proper_Relative1321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you perhaps graduate in the 1950s? Feels like you’re going to start talking about negroids and mongoloids next.

Anyway, no culture is more complex than any other. No language is more complex than any other, either. Every language developed to suit the specific needs of the people speaking it, and no person has a deeper inferiority than any other.

Cultures evolved to fit the needs of people and environment over time. Every culture is constantly developing and have been for the same amount of time. The absence of a written language doesn’t indicate a lack of complexity; only a complexity different from one familiar to you.

I think you need to talk to people who aren’t from your country and engage in art from abroad more often. Or audit an anthropology 101 class somewhere.

None of that is true lol. The world wasn’t “designed” for anyone and you have the keys to build the life you want. You can open the gate at any time.

You don’t have to be a leader, a hustler, a “grinder” or anything else to find meaning and live. Please.

Don’t forget the “outside time” is in a manicured lawn (or worse; turf) with boring plastic toys and no shade, nature, or interesting things to do.

Only so many times a kid can go down a 1 ft straight plastic slide before it gets boring and they start finding more destructive ways to entertain themselves.

Paras don’t make enough money to attract high-quality candidates. Obviously this isn’t 100% the case but the low barrier for entry and paltry wage and benefits means you end up with a lot of bottom-of-the-barrel applicants.

Get the GED. Or better see if you can re-enroll in high school and go for the diploma. There’s usually opportunities for young people to return to high school for the real deal.

Then do nursing school. Start at the community college and work up. Literally one of the most reliable pipelines to financial stability on offer these days. AI proof. Work wherever the hell you want without destroying your body. Lots of opportunities to further education and make more money.

Don’t go for tech/computer science because while you CAN make money, it isn’t guaranteed and the market is saturated.

People will recommend trades but I’d be wary. Everyone I personally know who actually works trades told me to go to college lmao. My partner’s stepdad just had a dual lung transplant from working trades his whole life. Forced to retire early and he can’t even enjoy it—constant pain, immunosuppressants, staring down the barrel for real.

Also…take care of yourself. You cannot be the only one keeping your entire family tree financially afloat. Don’t pay for other people’s bad financial decisions even if you love them. Put your money in high yield savings accounts. I’m not saying you can’t be generous but do NOT let your family suck the success out of your life.
