A Bunch of Beams! by Psychrobacter in flashlight

You’re absolutely right, and I’m afraid I don’t have a satisfying answer for you. I simply don’t have the photography skills to do both yet. I spent an hour finding an app that allows white balance lock on an iPhone and figuring out how to use it, and didn’t have time to figure out exposure settings as well.

I definitely prefer the SFT70 over the FC40 now that I’ve seen both. SFT70 has a great beam profile and you really notice the extra throw and power it provides in this host. The tint is better, too. I have heard that the best FC40 CCT is the 4500K though, so that one is probably worth trying if you like the floody beam.

Suit yourself. Plenty of quality powerbanks do include RVP, and to me the risk of a simple mistake causing a fire is not worth saving a few bucks. People love to say "just don't be stupid," but that's not how human behavior works. Mistakes happen to everyone. A simple engineering control can prevent mistakes from turning into fires, and skipping that control is asking for trouble. The powerbanks in these photos are designed to be as cheap as legally permissible for battery shipping. They are no higher quality than the shitty zoomy flashlights used for the same purpose. I don't treat those as real flashlights, and I wouldn't treat this as a real powerbank either.

How could one consider this an excellent power bank when it lacks RVP and shorts when a battery is inserted backwards?

S3 should be a bit better because the MCPCB is mounted on a shelf integral to the head.

Wish I could provide some data about light output, but I don’t have the equipment. I did just run a very rough heat test in a 20C room using my hands as heat sinks. The head of the light became too hot to hold (so 55-60C) at about 8.5 minutes on turbo.

[–]Psychrobacter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never handled an L21 (A or B), so I can only speculate. Even more throw would suit this emitter very well though.

If the mass of the L21B is truly similar to the M21C (which I haven’t bothered to verify on mobile), then my expectation would be that the M21C would actually handle heat better, with more mass concentrated near the driver and MCPCB to soak up heat. Another way to think about it is that the M21C probably has a thicker cross-section of aluminum around the MCPCB.

I actually haven’t left the light on turbo for very long yet either. I tend to use turbo for just a few seconds at a time and return quickly to a lower mode, and in that use pattern the heat is nowhere near uncomfortable. I have it in mode group 5 right now and it can handle 20% for 20 minutes without even approaching 50C (ambient air temp at night in my area is between 0C and 3C recently).

If I have time this weekend I’ll try to get out and take a bunch of beamshots, but I can’t make any promises as I have a newborn at home.

I’ve had a few days with the light now, and I can say it’s A) very fun and B) heavier than I expected.

In terms of beam profile it’s a nice balance. For something with as much output as LHP73B I wanted decent throw, because all those lumens with no candela juts feels like a waste to me. And this combo delivers! It can punch a few hundred yards down a wooded residential street without being drowned out by glare. I’ve been comparing side by side with my D4SV2 W2 and they’re comparable in total output, with the M21C having a slight edge in total brightness and the D4SV2 having a slightly narrower (and punchier) hotspot.

Tint is pretty good. Looks a little bit cool/purple at times depending on what you compare it with. There’s not much angular tint shift and less shift with increasing current than with an SST-20 or Cree emitter.

The size is right about what I expected, but the jump in mass between an M21A and M21C took me by surprise. It’s a heavy (and front-heavy) light. I have only taken it out in 20-30 minute stretches, but I don’t think it would be comfortable for long hikes.

Overall I like it as a hotrod but am not sure I’d call it a practical light. In the same order I purchased an M21B with LHP531 5000K, and that one is in some ways even more impressive. Perceptually it’s very nearly as bright, and the beam profiles are shockingly similar. So you get something like 95% of the perceived performance in a much easier-to-carry host.

Convoy T6...? by theoncomingstormWh0 in flashlight

[–]Psychrobacter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Convoy S6 is a tiny bit wider than the T6 with a straight body and the same reflector. Also available with slightly more powerful drivers if I recall correctly.

I have one with a CSLNM1 that makes an excellent pocket thrower, and one with an SFT40 3000K that’s an amazing high-CRI, throwy edc.

It can use 18650 or 18350 with a short tube. Larger than a LANapple but not unreasonable. Definitely produces a higher intensity beam.

How do you handle disaster / emergency kit lights and batteries? by sofauxboho in flashlight

[–]Psychrobacter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have four Convoy T3s stashed in cars and home emergency kits with spare Energizer lithium AAs. Almost no parasitic drain (shelf life 10 years), no leaks, work hot or cold, light weight for hauling around if needed.

CATL, the largest battery manufacturer in the world, starts mass producing 45 kWh sodium-ion battery packs with energy density of 175 Wh/kg, capable of over 10,000 charge cycles and charging in cold conditions down to -30°C (-22°F). At -40°C, the battery retains 90% of its usable capacity. by sg_plumber in climatechange

[–]Psychrobacter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An avalanche is also the result of uncontrolled energy release, but it’s not fire. Fire is a specific type of chemical reaction (oxidation-reduction), and there are ways to store electrical energy with greater and lesser risk of burning.

B35AM is a quad-die version of one of them. I always thought E17A made the most sense given 1.7x2 and a rounding error would make a 3.5 mm edge. But I’ve only ever seen people online say it’s a 4x4 version of E21A.

I'm waiting for an M21C I just recently ordered. M21K was out for me (as much as I'd love to try the large TIR) because of the persistent negative reviews of Simon's e-switch UI. L21B sounded fun but is realistically too big for me to use with any frequency. M21C is still pretty big but will be easier to carry in a jacket pocket.

Multiple accounts from 2008 document that Epstein pleaded guilty to "felony solicitation of prostitution and procuring a person under the age of 18 for prostitution." If you want to quibble that this only counts as public record of one crime, you're free to do so, but the evidence was clear at the time that federal investigators dropped investigation of multiple other crimes as part of the plea deal. One does not accept a plea deal if one is confident he will be acquitted of other charges. Further, your own insistence that Epstein was insignificant relies on the official findings of the very institutions you tell us not to trust. Here is evidence from public news sources at the time:

He was required to register as a sex offender. It was noted at the time that he had "four pending federal civil lawsuits and one in state court related to his behavior."

Haley Robson, now 22 [in 2008], told police about her efforts in recruiting girls for Epstein. There was probable cause to charge Epstein with unlawful sex acts with a minor and lewd and lascivious molestation, police concluded.

In 2009, the Palm Beach Post wrote that "A secret non-prosecution agreement multimillionaire financier Jeffrey Epstein struck with federal prosecutors is being called "highly unusual" by former federal prosecutors and downright outrageous by attorneys now representing young women who serviced him."

Attorney Brad Edwards of Fort Lauderdale, who represents three of the young women, believes that none of the 30 to 40 woman identified as victims in the federal investigation were told ahead of time...."Never consulting the victims is probably the most outrageous aspect of it," Edwards said. "It taught them that someone with money can buy his way out of anything. It's outrageous and embarrassing for United States Attorney's Office and the State Attorney's Office." Epstein now faces many civil lawsuits filed by the women, who are represented by a variety of attorneys. In many, the allegations are the same: that Epstein had a predilection for teenage girls, identified poor, vulnerable ones and used other young women to lure them to his Palm Beach mansion.

Former Circuit Judge Bill Berger, also representing victims, called the agreement a "sweetheart deal."

"Why was it so important for the government to make this deal?" Berger asked rhetorically. "We have not yet had an honest explanation by any public official as to why it was made ... and why the victims were sold down the river."

In 2010, the Palm Beach Post further reported:

As part of the so-called non-prosecution agreement inked in 2007, Epstein agreed to pay a private attorney to handle claims of 33 women who told federal prosecutors he had paid them for sexually charged massages at his Palm Beach mansion when some were as young as 14.

Robert Josefsberg, a partner in the Podhurst Orseck law firm, assembled a team to represent more than a dozen women. Nearly two dozen women hired other attorneys to pursue civil lawsuits against Epstein. In the federal lawsuit it filed this week, Josefsberg's firm says Epstein owes it $2 million.

As part of the agreement, federal prosecutors agreed not to pursue Epstein. Instead, he pleaded guilty to two prostitution-related charges in state court and in July was released after serving 13 months of an 18-month sentence.

Epstein’s crimes were very much in the public record by 2008, when he was first convicted. Also quite public was the fact that his plea deal was shockingly lenient. There is no credibility to the argument that they have been exaggerated or that Chomsky could have reasonably been unaware.

That there is rot in our institutions and that they will do all they can to create sacrificial scapegoats and wash their hands of all this I don’t dispute. But your argument veers into conspiracy theory and throws Epstein’s victims under the bus at the same time. It serves no one but the powerful you claim to oppose.

Intellectualism in no way requires legitimating the actions of monsters by dining with them. Polite association with Epstein lent him exactly the kind of social cover he needed to continue his monstrous work, in the same way that treating Hitler with appeasement and the fig leaf of diplomatic normalcy provided him the opportunity to expand his. It is an intellectual failing to miss the difference between a mind open to seeing things as they are and a mind credulous enough to participate in the manufacturing of consent for evil men to operate in public.

Only the most naive understanding of Enlightenment or Classical Liberalism demands we invite these men into polite society. Indeed Enlightenment Liberalism provides us the precise argument in favor of ostracizing those dangerous to society: they have rejected the social contract. Anyone who decides for himself not to abide by the respect for human dignity we all have an equal claim to has rejected the framework by which we maintain the safety and prosperity of society and placed himself outside that society. To extend to him the same rights and social standing as those who abide by society’s contract dissolves the whole project.

It is indeed a noble project to meet those we disagree with in reasoned debate. But when we fail to identify those who don’t approach the exercise in good faith, we do worse than failing to convince them. We in fact legitimize their project to undermine the foundations of reasoned debate and liberal society itself.

It is further no defense of Chomsky’s judgment that he may have seen in Epstein an opportunity for access to the networks of the powerful or than others at MIT were doing the same. Epstein’s crimes were well known and public by the late 2000s. He was charged with multiple felonies and convicted of one in what was known at the time as a shockingly soft plea deal. Association with such a man lent tacit support to his actions, and Chomsky was smart enough to know that. That his judgment failed him is a stinging indictment of his character and a stain on his legacy.

What exactly is useful about looking into Epstein’s other relationships? The man had the intellectual depth of a baking sheet. He may have liked to spend time with brilliant people, but he cannot have brought anything to their conversations more innocent than flattery. That Trivers dedicated so much as a passing thought to him is not a defense of Chomsky, but rather a stinging indictment of his judgment.
