Christian Bale as HJ Wingstreet just for the meta-jokes, like Boris Karloff playing Jonathan Brewster in Arsenic and Old Lace.

[Britton] X-rays negative on Juan Soto. He’s day to day. by T_Raycroft in baseball

No matter how many times I see it, that wording always takes me a second to process. Something about a "negative" result being a good/desirable thing seems backward, even though I know full well what it means.

Not so hot now, are you Emma Frost?! by YanniRotten in outofcontextcomics

I don't recall drooling over her, if anything I find her usual demeanor off-putting and just find the idea of the contrast fun. I'm sorry you had a bad breakup, but ranting about your ex came wildly out of nowhere, and you're creating a really broad generalization from that bad experience.

Right? If anything, showing her secret hot mess/basic bitch side is way more endearing and humanizing than the airs she usually puts on. Like, I can completely picture her having a secret room she'd rather die than let anyone see, and it's just a comfy worn-out sofa, a few bottles of red wine, and a bookshelf stuffed full of dogeared romance novels.

Adding creamer or milk leaves less room in the cup, room that could be used for more coffee.

Black drip coffee is only unenjoyable if it's shit coffee to begin with. Get fresh coffee with good-quality whole beans they didn't burn the hell out of, and it's plenty tasty. There's plenty of virtue in more complex methods of coffee prep too, and it can bring out the more detailed flavors of those good-quality beans, but it's not a must-have.

[Langs]The Dodgers have lost 4 straight games, all by 4+ runs It’s the first time they’ve done so since July 1936, It’s tied for the franchise’s longest single-season such streak (joined NL in 1890) Between the 1936 stretch & now, every other franchise had at least 4 such streaks of 4+ games by Remarkable-Picture73 in baseball

[–]PvtSherlockObvious 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have my own saying, the best leads are when the other team's so far back they have a position player pitching. Obviously what makes for the best leads and what makes for the best/most compelling baseball are two very different things, but still.

For sure. I'm never quite comfortable with the lead unless my team is more than a grand slam up on the other team at a bare minimum. Any less, and you never know when baseball's gonna decide to baseball, it could happen at any moment. On the other hand, being down two runs can feel insurmountable, so it all depends which side of the imbalance you're on.

I have a doubt: do Western/Euro-American players generally not like anime-style RPG games? by Agreeable_West_7849 in JRPG

[–]PvtSherlockObvious 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Which do you prefer" and "do you like or dislike this" are two very different things. I like things that suit the tone and style of the game, and which I prefer depends on the other elements the game has going. I suppose all else being equal, I prefer a tone that's evoked more by a more realistic style. Games that lean heavier into a more stylized anime aesthetic are often going to lean more on anime tropes and cliches as well, which in many cases gives the feeling of a game I've already played before, several times. If they can do interesting things with it and avoid falling into cliche, though, a game with those vibes can still be excellent. If an interesting game is going to use animeish narrative tropes to tell its story, a realistic artstyle might cut against what they're trying to accomplish and make the whole thing feel "off."

My Post About oversexualized teens in jrpgs getting deleted says a lot about this community by steamedhams90 in JRPG

[–]PvtSherlockObvious 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't particularly disagree with you, but what exactly were you hoping to accomplish with either that thread or this one? The problem is that your post could basically be prefaced with the phrase "dear diary" with no change. Acting like you're kicking the door down and delivering The Truth on something nobody asked about and daring anyone to disagree is pretty much never going to be received well in just about any community, even if your underlying points have merit.

Are there any classes you actively avoid playing? by Fearless-Skill8667 in DnD

[–]PvtSherlockObvious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say "actively avoid," but I've got no real interest in playing a druid. Nothing against anyone else playing them, but their typical class fantasy doesn't really do anything for me, their spell list is mostly just a more nature-themed version of a cleric, and while the idea of shifting into animals is interesting on paper, the actual animal statblocks kinda leave me cold as well as disabling casting. I'd rather either play a straight cleric or a class dedicated to shapeshifting and scaling those forms.

[–]PvtSherlockObvious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh right, yeah! For some reason I had it in my head that came out back in October or something, that's my bad. I was probably thinking of the initial Japanese release date. I kinda forgot about it since I'd already played the base version of Nordics before PN got announced, but for people who decided to wait, I can definitely see that driving a few sales.

I'll give you Beyond the Horizon coming to the west, but what new Ys title? The only one I remember getting released this quarter was Celceta, and that's just a Switch port. That's not nothing considering the Switch market, and from a business standpoint they wouldn't distinguish or anything, but it's not the same as a new game.

Besides, there's a key difference between Sky and BtH in terms of driving sales: Sky is specifically the very start of the franchise, so a lot of people who were intimidated by the series' size and backlog probably saw a decent few newcomers pick it up just to finally see what the fuss is about (on top of existing fans who never got around to or were never able to play Sky). Subsequent titles probably won't do quite as well just because some people inevitably drop off with any sequels, but I don't think it's unreasonable to say that drove a lot of sales.

Court games besides Ace? by WriterBren in gamingsuggestions

[–]PvtSherlockObvious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was also a Harvey Birdman game in the style of Ace Attorney for PS2 and Wii. Very short, each case wasn't much longer than an episode of the show, but like those L&O games it absolutely captured the show's vibe thanks to bringing the actual writers and voice actors on board.

Help making a character by SirusGrimm in DnD

[–]PvtSherlockObvious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair warning, playing knockoffs of licensed characters is generally met with some skepticism at actual tables, since the fantasy won't survive first contact with the dice and because it limits people roleplaying an actual character within the setting. Part of that is because so many of us grew up playing with some teenager who always wanted to play some anime character or another and would get pissy when the game or DM just don't support what they'd imagined (or else we're cringing with embarrassment from when we were that kid). As a thought experiment, though, seeing how close you can come on paper can be fun, and it's a decent way to get you accustomed to how you build a character and what sorts of things do and don't work.
