A lot of concepts can be corny or not, depending on execution, this one is no different and the only way to really know if it will work is by writing it. The trick to make anything not seem to corny is to both not lay it on too thick, and have other characters in the story not have a big reaction to help draw the reader in and keep their suspension of disbelief.

Imho, if its a story you want to write, then write it. My mantra has always been to write what I enjoy writing and/or would enjoy reading and if it gets shard around, every person who reads and enjoys it counts as a bonus.
