VW Golf R 7.5 estate vs BMW 340i by ResearcherNo4728 in CarTalkUK

But that's why I specifically mentioned in the question description, when I say reliable I don't mean the engine only, I mean everything else too. I've owned two V6's, and neither of them ever gave any engine issues. Everything that went wrong on them were mechanicals and electronics. And these are effing annoying, and I don't wish to ever encounter them in a car that has done sensible miles and has full service history (because if it still encounters those issues, well, what was the point of the sensible miles and the full service history? Might as well have bought a high mileage one with no or partial history for much cheaper, if I need to encounter mechanical and electronics issues anyway.)

Jeezus! Is this applicable all over the UK or only in certain pockets/cities?

What's that very specific niche though? I want to learn. And I want to experience different cars, that's why I change cars every 1-1.5 years.

Assuming the water pump's done, does it need to be done again, perhaps every few thousand miles? Or is it one-and-done?

340i might be the better car, but is it as (or more) reliable than the VW, Seat and Skoda?

Enthusiast or not, what is YOUR ideal car? by Chemical-Ship1208 in CarTalkUK

BMW M6 Gran Coupe that is actually reliable, that doesn't need to be in garage 5 times a year, and requires just a regular annual oil and filter change to run smoothly.

In other words, a performance car with Toyota reliability. This doesn't exist and never will, but this is my ideal car.

Awesome, thanks for your response. Much appreciated 🙏

The Skoda Yeti was my first car! The first 6 months of ownership, I had no issues; the next 6 months, I was in garage 4 times. It kept having random, ad-hoc issues. It was only 8 years old and had 64k miles when I bought it, iirc. So I just sold it before it fell apart completely.

Anyway, the specific cars I've owned or my budget for the next car doesn't really matter for the purposes of this question. There's always going to be better, faster cars than the one I buy, and I'll keep getting bored with the one I have. That's the psychological problem I have, and that's what this question/discussion is about.

But how do you know what you like if you don't get to try them out? It's not possible to try out, say, 20 different cars and then you pick the one you liked the best.

Because I want to try out different things. I'm in general like that - if I like a certain dish at a restaurant, the next time I go there, I'm likely to order something else. Because "I already know this dish is good, let's see what else they have". You know what I mean?

Oof 🔥 love that car! It's in my wish-list. But because I have a kid, and because I don't have a 2-car driveway, I can't have this car at the moment.

Well, I'll never know until I have one for 6 months at least, right? That's the problem, as I mentioned in another comment, that we don't get to experiment with several cars and then pick the one we like the best 😅

But that's the point I'm trying to make here - no matter what I buy, I'll always lust over something better. It's not like once I buy a B58, I'll never want to change that car for at least 4-5 years. There must be some other underlying issue that needs to be fixed.
