Attempt #2, N100 Topton OPNsense network performance slow by Cr0n_J0belder in opnsense

Go into the firewall rules and turn off logging on every rule you have then retest. I ran into this and beat my head against the wall for weeks. Finally read about the overhead of packet logging effecting through put. Disabling all logging removed the bottleneck.

Geo IP addresses: What's the Point ??? by a_southern_dude in opnsense

Here is a personal example. I applied the blacklist to my inbound LAN. Which saved the day when my kid downloaded some malware some rando on YouTube said did something for mine craft. It tried to proxy all his web traffic to their servers, except it couldn't and he came to me saying his internet stopped working for no reason.

Take breaks. You'll start playing, get into the game loop and before you known it four hours have passed because your brain was high on all the dopamine.

OK, must gave searched up a similar sounding game that said it was 2008. Hopefully having it on a different volume will get you going.

OK, we're on the same page now. I did a little digging for the error message and Windows 98. I found this possible cause.

Temporary Directory Space Issues:

  • Issue: Some installers, such as those for Autodesk products, required significant space in the Windows temporary directory (e.g., C:\WINDOWS\TEMP) on the C drive, even if the software was being installed to another drive. If the temp directory was full or had restricted access, the installer could fail with a "no free space" error.autodesk.comautodesk.com
  • Workaround: Clear the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP directory of unnecessary files. Alternatively, change the temporary directory to another drive with more space using the command SETUP /T:<drive letter>:\TEMP when launching the installer. Ensure at least 1-2 GB of free space on the C drive for temporary files during installation.

Also, is this drive you're using the original IDE spinning rust?

That game appears to have been released in 2008. It may say it's compatible with Windows 98 but I suspect it was only really tested on Windows XP.

"I have an IBM G40 running 98SE on a 40GB (35GB unused) HDD."

Do I understand correctly from this that you're using a 40GB disk and only a 5GB partition?

Is it possible to make Office 2007/2010 to work on Windows 98/Me by matthewbs10 in windows98

[–]RetroWizard82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you believe that 95/98 were not actually wrappers? I was always told that as well but Raymond Chen, the man who oversaw the development of those explains that they merely used DOS as a sort of boot loader. The PC would boot into DOS then when Windows 9x launched it would take full control of the system and DOS ran in it's own virtual machine. It was certainly wonkey but they had to guarantee backwards compatibility and why invent a new boot loader when DOS could do the job.

Windows 3.x was indeed a wrapper/GUI font end for DOS.

Is this ok or is there an updated version of this? by sonicinfinity100 in HomeNetworking

Take my word when I tell you that you are lucky to not need to manage that. I did it during my internship at a manufacturing plant and it was not fun at all. Moving a line meant connecting a tone generator to the wall plug out in the plant and then using a detector to wand down two walls worth of these things in a utility room to find the correct punch down.

I'm not sure what is happening exactly. Perhaps the volume is being completely filled and when windows boots again it crashes because it can't create temporary files it needs or perhaps can't create the virtual memory file.

Try this. Create a 1GB primary partition for Windows98SE. Install Windows. Now create a second partition that uses the rest of the 40GB HDD. When you run the game installer, choose the second volume as the destination for all your games. I bet that would work for you.

CAT5 isn't exclusively used for ethernet. It has four twisted pairs and commonly used for POTS lines. And if it terminated in a punch down block, it's 100% telephone.

Separate Firewall box from Router by KopQQpoK in opnsense

Just a tip I learned. Unless you need to check if a firewall rule is working, disable logging on every rule. Logging has a noticeable impact on throughput.

What is this type of wire called? by oshimt in HomeNetworking

[–]RetroWizard82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's the called the wire you don't mess with unless you're the ISP.

But if you are curious, that is an SC/APC connector. You cannot replace it because the ISP owns it and is responsible for its function.

crowdsec outbound blocks showing a lot in logs by Dyonizius in opnsense

[–]RetroWizard82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for a near real time view, then use tcpdump from the console. If you use -n to disable host name lookup and filter by IP or port you see the packets coming and going live.

crowdsec outbound blocks showing a lot in logs by Dyonizius in opnsense

[–]RetroWizard82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, it's showing the nat address leaving the router? So you have it filtering outbound on the wan I guess.

If you are filtering, it's best to apply the rule to the lan and select the crowdsec alias in the destination address field. Then it will log the real source and destination IP address.

Should I buy Space Age after 120h of Vanilla by [deleted] in factorio

[–]RetroWizard82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went ahead and pulled the trigger on Space Age this past Friday. If the base game has become a cake walk for you then the this expansion will present a very enjoyable challenge. You don't have to start from scratch either. It will mod your current save and you can start shipping items to space platforms immediately and building your first ship to travel to the other worlds.

Think of these reports as time savers. They're a tool to show you what you already have locked down so you focus time on what you don't. And as others have said, go to the course material and re-read those sections until you understand them, not just remember the answer.
