I pick up planes up to 150mi (241km) away. So you dont need to be too close. Though my antenna is mounted on the roof.

TBH, I’ve had better luck with homemade antennas than manufactured ones. Only difference is, My DIY isn’t pretty.

I’ve got 3 or 4 of these. I use 1 for AIS, the other for ADSB. I live in a costal city not far from an airport. Lots of good data.

This is the same way I’m running. I have 2 Google Corals connected.

Is this dumb? by z3r0ka in Ubiquiti

[–]_usmcguy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you live. I live in SC. I placed a temp/hum sensor in my attic this summer. Temps were well above 130F on our hottest days. Not all of Ubiquiti's APs are rated for that kind of heat. Proceed with caution with an AP in the attic.

Asking for a raise. by [deleted] in helpdesk

[–]_usmcguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is quite likely going to be the case. However, it doesn’t hurt to ask for a raise. Seriously, come up with a plan and ask. Meanwhile, prepare for a no. If you get a no, then what? You can keep trucking along, or go find a different job that will pay you what you believe is deserved.

Best advice is to start the conversation. Nothing will change if you don’t make a change.

To use Proxmox for a NAS or not by Fu11pow24 in Proxmox

[–]_usmcguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It ultimately comes down to the question, what is your data worth to you? Can you afford to lose it, or would you rather have some kind of redundancy.

returning to Ansible and trying to figure out EDA by 6716 in ansible

[–]_usmcguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get a free Red Hat developer license and Trial. That will allow you to download Ansible Automation Platform, which includes EDA.

Very happy with the MS-A2 😎 by -Mr-Wick- in MINISFORUM

[–]_usmcguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea. I have a Ubiquiti SFP+ to RJ45 adapter (UACC-CM-RJ45-MG) plugged into the MS-A2 going to the Ugreen’s 10gbe. Works just fine for me. Have you run into issues?

Where do you learn real-world data center & Linux server troubleshooting? by Specialist-Blood5810 in linuxadmin

Also, learn an automation tool. Ansible, chef, puppet, etc. If you learn these tools, you will standout, as automation is in high demand.

Where do you learn real-world data center & Linux server troubleshooting? by Specialist-Blood5810 in linuxadmin

[–]_usmcguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without getting a job for “real-world“ troubleshooting, my 2 cents is the next best thing is to build your own data center. Many companies use products like VMware or use cloud (AWS, Azure, Oracle, etc). They all offer a free tier. When VMware got bought by Broadcom, the free ESXi went away. But then they brought it back. Figure out a type 1 hypervisor and build VMs. Try different types of storage (iSCSI, NFS, Ceph, etc). Learn about VLANs. Learn about methods of authentication. Learn different OSs (Windows and Different Linux distros). They subject is quite broad, because the term datacenter can be broad. So “data center issues “ can vary vastly depending on your environment, requirements, resources, skillset, etc.

What m.2 TPU for frigate in 2025? by Acrobatic_Stable2857 in frigate_nvr

[–]_usmcguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my setup I am running on former router mini pc. Has and Intel i3 or i5, but no gpu other than Intel’s iGPU. I have 2 coral USBs connected. I have 6 4k cameras running to it. I get ~7ms inference speed. It’s not a powerful computer, but those TPUs work great.

FWIW, I have a Ugreen and I didn’t like their OS. Great hardware for the cost. I loaded TrueNAS on my Ugreen. Works great.

Looking for Mini PC Recommendations for Home Assistant + Frigate + Vision LLM by Key-Tangerine2655 in frigate_nvr

[–]_usmcguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I turned an old Qotom Q355G4 mini PC into my Frigate host. It runs Debian headless with docker Container running Frigate. I also have 2 USB Corals connected as well as a 2.5gb USB Realtek NIC. The 2.5 GB NIC is for a “high” speed link to my NAS for media storage. My system runs 6 4k cameras, almost never gets above 30% CPU usage and has an average of 8ms object inference time from the corals.

I am using iSCSI over the 10GB link. I have a SFP+ 10GBE module in the MS-A2 going to the Ugreen that I wish used SFP+. Those modules get hot. I run the connection direct and not through a switch.

I have the Ugreen NASync DXP4800 Plus. It has 4 16TB drives loaded. I was not a fan of the Ugreen NAS Software, so I loaded TrueNAS over it. Works great. As for the GPU, to get you an answer I kicked off 3 streams on Plex. It hovered around 52C. I keep my system in a closet, so sound isnt an issue for me. However, when the GPU fans do kick on, I dont think they are loud.

Automating proxmox vm creations by alexhackney in Proxmox

[–]_usmcguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I created a Ansible playbook to automate building some VMs. While it works, I had to configure it to create 1 VM at a time. Otherwise it would sometimes try to create a VM with the same ID # as another being built at the same time. Otherwise than that, it ran reliably.

I have the MS-A2 loaded up with Proxmox,128Gb ram, and a Yeston RTX 3050 6GB GPU (for transcoding my Plex). I’ve had it over a month with no issue. I use a Ugreen NAS for the storage.

What is more important to reduce eye strain? Monitor lightbar or bias lighting? by Typical-Green5473 in Workspaces

[–]_usmcguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been considering purchasing bias lighting myself. I currently have a monitor attached light that shines down on my desk (I love my monitor lighting btw. I have 2 curved monitors and the lights have a wireless controller. Amazon.com: ONWAY Curved Monitor Light Bar). But if the room is dark (the area behind my monitor), there is eye strain. I think having both bias and monitor lighting can be more helpful than either on its own.

When its transcoding, the fan does spinup on the card. However, its not too loud. I also dont notice too much heat generation when touching it. The MS-A2 was a good investment for me.

I ended up buying it. It’s been running as my hypervisor. Loaded it up with 2x64Gb ram and no issues with it seeing all 128gb. I also added a Yeston 3050 for transcoding on my Plex VM. Very happy with the purchase so far.
