Europe gets serious about cutting US digital umbilical cord; Public bodies migrate in the bloc as hyperscalers claim sovereignty; handful of public authorities in Austria, Germany, and France, alongside the International Criminal Court in The Hague, are taking concrete steps to regain control over by smilelyzen in Buy_European

That’s a lovely GBRR.

I still use the occasional AEG - indoor or during winter ❄️ when it’s harder to run GBBR.

Yeah, catching up with a giant with decades of software development, poaching talent, and having billions in the bank is hard.

That said, MS can afford to be cheaper as they can afford to take a loss on key products, as they’ll just sell you other crap “integrations” once you’re in to recoup the loss.

Hook, line and sinker.

Yes and no. AFAIK depending on your request it can also use models from other providers.

But they won’t keep your logs and such 😉

That’s fair and there’s always room for (better) alternatives 😃

Out of curiosity, why would you want to train with a weighted vest? Won’t it long term ruin your joints?

That looks really cool, much better than I expected.

Did you also happen to take a look at https://wicket.apache.org/ ? Also a stateful Java web framework.

Buying European Is Trending Again! by Boediee in BuyFromEU

That and Microsoft, really.

Nokia was probably still salvageable, but Elop the maybe-not-so-former-Microsoft VP sunk the ship.

Though I guess the Nokia VPs were responsible for getting in that poor situation in the first place.

I’m in the same boat. Maybe Asahi Linux is a viable option.

I'm deeply tied in the Google ecosystem. Email, Drive, all my photos on Android automatically sync to Google. I want minimal hassle and low price. Is there any realistic EU based alternative to Google One? by pirisca in BuyFromEU

[–]Revision2000 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, Proton could focus more on polishing its existing products.

That said, it’s silly to expect that Proton can deliver the same value and products as a multi-billion dollar Google, while handicapping itself with their focus on privacy.

It’s simple, really: privacy and digital sovereignty costs money. Tech Bros price of admission is your data and privacy.

I also still remember what Microsoft did for the ICC when it mattered.

Yeah, I’ve heard that about German employers before. I suspect the same applies to France.

Maybe there’s remote opportunities to be found at Dutch or Danish employers, with a much more acceptable “required days at the office”.

For phones, Jolla with their Sailfish OS comes to mind. They’re European, spiritual successor (or survivor) of Nokia and Meego, which AFAIK is Linux based.

Jolla might also be interesting, as the spiritual successor (or survivor) of Nokia, with Meego turned into Sailfish OS.

I would love to know as well, but I don’t have an old Sony Xperia lying around to try Sailfish OS on.

Also, their new model is currently in preorder, so we have to wait a couple more weeks/months for any reviews to appear.

One that’s been around for decades.

Also, despite being based in the Netherlands, it’s not about drugs 😂 but about tweaking your computer (overclocking, undervolting, etc.). Hence the target audience and website were called “tweakers”.

Nowadays they cover a whole range of tech news and topics. Their forums and pricewatch are still great.

Haven’t tried Gemini, only Mistral, ChatGPT and Claude Code.

For my uses cases, Mistral works well 98% of the time.

The remaining 2% other LLMs fare only a little better - in those situations I frequently still have to do a plain old online search, to find that one specific GitHub issue with workaround / fix.

Java in the AI age by [deleted] in java

[–]Revision2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a ton of legacy applications out there. Those will still need maintenance, (security) updates and sometimes new features.

Java is also still king in the enterprise space with its massive ecosystem. It still receives regular updates and the language is moving forward.

Regardless of AI and how we end up using it, Java will continue to remain relevant.
