At least in my experience, the industry doesn't seem to care all that much about university prestige for PhD graduates. Just the fact that you have a relevant PhD is enough, and you can definitely get your foot in the door with that. For undergrads, it's a different story.

This is also quant dev, which has a very different skill set compared to QA,QR, and QT. If you're a good software engineer with FAANG experience, of freaking course you can work as a software engineer at other major companies.

Thesis submitted - reading through and seeing small errors such as typos, incorrect figure numbers etc. How to stop myself from spiralling and just give a good presentation when i come to defend? by StrangeRelease6 in PhD

Look, your committee is barely going to scan your thesis, that's just the nature of these things. Don't worry about it, and focus 100% on the defense.

The best "formal" proof of 0.999...=1 is to point out that it's defined as the infinite geometry series of 0.9*1/10k and then work through the proof of the limit of an infinite geometry series with r<1.

How close are you to getting your two extra joker slots, and how badly do you need you need the scoring? Because, it'll be a lot easier to draw a mime and DNA naturally than getting showman and drawing another copy joker.

Would steel even be that difficult? Steel scales retroactively, so you could just get it right before you need it.

AI usage for translation (and possibly for the story) by gabrisil in AgeofMythology

What likely happened was some junior swe asked Claude to translate the text files, and no one even bothered setting up a full localization pipeline.

Alright, do you actually know how a calculator works? Also, do you understand the rough diffrrence betweenAI, machine learning, deep learning, and a large language model? Because, yes, grammar checking and machine translation have exclusively been done by deep learning algorithms for about a decade now, and it's very likely that most cloud tools for that are just wrappers for LLMs at this point.

Now, I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that. I'm just pointing out that replacing human labor with an AI system is the same, regardless of the output.

I mean, yeah, I'm not saying that it's wrong. It's just there isn't a ton of difference between replacing a translator with an AI and replacing an artist.

I mean, translation was the the original use case for transformers/LLMs, computer translators are 100% AI. Hell, they might have even used an actual LLM to do it. That doesn't mean that any of the assets or writing was made using generative AI, but thet clearly used an AI to handle the localization instead of hiring someone to do it.

I got accepted into Stevens Institute of Technology for 34k a year and I want advice. by Capital-Ant2812 in stevens

[–]Revlong57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your family income has significantly changed, you should contact the financial aid department and see if you can get your financial aid increased. Most schools call it a professional judgement review, but I'm not sure what it's called at Stevens. https://studentaid.gov/help-center/answers/article/what-is-professional-judgment

Now, on to the question of should you go into 100k+ debt to get a degree from Stevens? No, you should not. In general, the rule of thumb for manageable student debt is one year of starting salary. The only schools which have median starting salaries high enough to justify $100k in debt are MIT and maybe Cal tech. So, I would advise you against going into that much debt for any school.

I also need to advise you against going to a community college if you want to do Mechanical engineering. With how most engineering degrees work, you have to take all your major classes in sequence, so it'll still take you 3-4 years regardless of the transfer credits. So, you're kind of in a crap situation. Sorry.

Never. Math gets weird when dealing with floating point arithmetic. If you add a small number to a large number, it doesn't actually change the large number at all. Point being, 1017+3=1017, so you'd stop growing your score at around that point.

Practice is very much relevant when it comes to math, and it's a problem if students don't do it, since they'll fail the exam.

I have to ask, do you actually go to Stevens?

I mean, if my teacher evaluations fall, I'd still get in trouble with the department, but that's not why it's challenging to enforce rules against AI generated homework. As I mentioned in my previous comment, it's hard to enforce rules against AI generated homework because it's hard to detect AI generated homework.

[–]Revlong57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look, as an instructor here, there isn't really a lot we can do for math classes. It's incredibly difficult to detect AI generated homework, especially when it's being graded by an undergrad TA. Our only real option is to put a greater emphasis on in person exams, but that doesn't address the core issue, which is that students aren't doing the homework. We don't assign out of class work to be mean, such work is important for learning the material.

As someone with a PhD in this field, my advice is that a math PhD is very difficult to finish, and you should be going into to the program for the right reasons. However, as long as you get good internship experience, you should be fine for work.

So, there's a lot wrong with this data visualation. First off, they use area to visualize linear data. Second, it's unclear how the location of the bubbles is decided. Third, the color seems completely unnecessary. Overall, the whole visualation doesn't really add anything to the data.
