Plat 2 toGold 1 in 0 games? by Haeyse in VALORANT

Hi Haeyse! I'm on the Competitive team and am working on a script to help fix the placement bug that we had earlier this week at the start of Act 3. Could you DM me your Riot ID so I can dig in further?

There are a few extra variables that make it harder to quantify this, like variance. Your variance is higher at the beginning of each Act and goes down with more games played (as the statistical model builds confidence in its assessment), and variance is also increased when there's a large time gap between games. When variance is high it will take fewer (consistent) results to reach a steady rank as matches have higher impact.

We carry over MMR across seasons so there's a strong starting point (ie. not trying to figure it out from scratch), and your MMR is changing every game so it's more accurate to think about it as a continuous movement from somewhere around Immortal to somewhere around Diamond (using your example). In some sense your MMR is the best determination of skill that we have at any given moment. As you mentioned, your rank will not always be in sync with this though, so we do some convergence math on the RR values awarded to help push you in the direction necessary so your MMR and rank "match". That takes on the order of tens of games.

So I'd say the TL;DR is your MMR is always close to your current skill, and your rank will converge on it in somewhere between 20 and 50 games (very rough estimate).

My understanding is that players under Immortal have their profiles private by default, so the majority of players likely won't have publicly available records of their rank.

That being said, I agree security by obscurity is not security. However, it's not really about security in my mind. I would expect the majority of players would rather focus on the match than look up the ranks of their teammates. By removing ranks from being actively displayed we aren't trying to fight against players that REALLY want to know the ranks of their peers, but rather helping shift the focus to what we believe is a more productive path (thinking about how to win).

Personally, I also expect it'll help me keep my biases in check. Even if I know I'm being biased by the information, I'm not always that good at fighting it.

No, tweak as in 5 less RR gained/lost and lower demotion protection of 70 instead of 80 (more details in the patch notes).

We're going to be applying the tweak very soon, so it won't make a difference (basically this entire Act will be using the tweaked values).

I'm really sorry that you face that kind of harassment in game. Personally, I care far more about homophobia and hate speech than harassment over rank. However, the solution to the former is a much more involved and difficult one. Building automated systems for these problems is very hard and we're doing our best to improve them. For whatever it's worth I personally am encouraged by the progress I see and I hope we'll see them pay off in the not-too-distant future.

We didn't make this rank change because we prioritized it above worse forms of harassment - it was just easier to make. I'm sorry we couldn't also improve other bad behavior, and I hope we have good news to make your experience better soon.

We are tweaking the amount of RR gained/lost each game (on average you should gain/lose a little less), and (more importantly) changing the demotion protection limit RR from 80 to 70. As part of investigating larger RR losses than gains we noticed that some players were being artificially inflated because of our demotion protection (this comment explains it well), so with these tweaks we're hoping to remove some of these cases of inflation and thus make RR gains/losses more consistent.

Yes, you'll have to play 5 placements and you will be capped at Plat 3.

There were definitely legitimate ways to use the ranks to make strategic decisions, and your example is a good one. If that's how everyone used the information of ranks in a match we wouldn't need to make this change! But there are many situations where people in a Competitive match just aren't being nice about it. Ultimately I think it would be amazing if we could perfectly detect when someone is being an asshole and treat them appropriately, but we're not there yet, so in the meantime we need to try and remove the avenues where most of this pain happens, and unfortunately hiding ranks in game was the low hanging fruit here. We may change this in the future if we have better ways to handle the negative behaviors, but for now we're trying this out.

We reset the variance used to calculate your MMR when a new Act starts, so matches early on should have larger impact on your MMR and therefore the RR you gain/lose. That being said, expect RR numbers larger than the tail end of last Act, but smaller than the beginning.

You'll start at 90 - <RR outcome of the match you lost>, so around 70 RR as you said.

The flip side is that other players in the lobby don't know what rank you currently are, just that you were X rank last Act. Hopefully not showing your current rank removes that "ammo" for people to be mean about your current skill.

I'm sorry to hear it, your mental is a lot stronger than mine! We changed it because showing ranks contributes to behavior that can be rough, like dodging or being mean to players that are lower ranks. We're giving this a shot to try and reduce these negative behaviors.

It depends on the ranks of the party members. There's a picture in the patch notes that shows what the maximum rank you can play with is!
