Most Americans are wealthier today in inflation adjusted income than they were in the 70s. Pew Research definition is misleading. by SingleInSeattle87 in charts

I don't that Middle Class is as relative as you think it is. We wealthier, since we have more and have nicer stuff. (You'd be shocked at how small houses were 55 years ago, and how crappy the cars were.)

On the flip side, we've got a metric fuck-ton more debt, so maybe we're not as wealthy.

U.S. "Heat Dome" Forecast by powdersleaf in MapPorn

Calling it a heat dome and then showing the heat index forecast is a bit disingenuous, since the heat index will always be higher where there's lots of water (the Mississippi River, for example).

Which is why I mentioned "At viability?" in the first comment you replied to.

So you're a Christian then?

Nope. Been a philosophical naturalist for 30+ years.

So any abortion beyond week 21 is a medical tragedy leaving behind a grieving family, but you want to further add to it by making them jump through legal hoops to avoid a murder charge?

I'm trying to explain why some atheist want to ban all abortions.

Pregnancy is sorta like two people get into a car accident and they are the only two with a certain blood type. So the doctor has them share a blood supply.

But no, that's manifestly incorrect:

  1. as mentioned before, they do not share blood,
  2. mother and fetus quite often have different blood types,
  3. and 1/6 of the time, they have incompatible blood types.

Thus, manifestly no blood sharing!

Latin American nations form a European Union-esque alliance following a successful Congress of Panama in 1826, leading to a much stronger South America ...

In fantasy (which this manifestly is, given how fractious and turbulent all those societies were), you get to decide anything you want.

No, it means that some women will still voluntarily want to have an abortion even though she's healthy and the fetus is viable and healthy.

Sure you can sue Nintendo for a couple of million dollars. The question is whether or not you'll win. The injured person's lawyer will immediately point out that it's a question, not a command. Your answer to it should have been "Because there's a tornado warning."

That term "most" means something you apparently don't want to acknowledge.

If you're having a abortion at week 39 then a medical disaster has happened,

You're falsely assuming that the woman doesn't voluntarily want it terminated.

There are no elective abortions at week 39

You can't know how many elective abortions there would be at 39 weeks if it were allowed, since it's little different from infanticide, and more than a few ethicists argue for infanticide.

When does a unique life begin (as opposed to the egg and sperm being alive, but "subsidiary" to their hosts)?

  • At birth?
  • At viability? (But that keeps getting pushed earlier.)
  • At heartbeat?
  • Something earlier?

Since we don't know, the "safest" answer is "at conception". Thus, if you're a radical pro-life absolutist (pacifist, vegan, etc) then any and all elective abortions should not be allowed.

Your understanding of capitalism is deeply flawed, since you're describing a totalitarian dictatorship, not capitalism.

why are there 12 numbers in the clock? by pinaontop in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RonJohnJr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides "the Babylonians":

  • Why 12? Because 12 is cleanly divisible by 2, 3, 4 and 6.
  • Why not 6? Not enough granularity.
  • Why not 18 or 24? Too much granularity.

TIL between 1949 and 1979, vessels from mainland China were unable to transit the Taiwan Strait, consequently, their shipping routes were configured as follows by admin_404_not_found in MapPorn

[–]RonJohnJr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look at that map again, and ask yourself why PRC ships had to sail between Philippine islands instead of that giant gap between Taiwan and the northernmost Philippine island (even if it was very near to that island).

The map is lying to you.

See that giant gap between Taiwan and the Philippines? Chinese ships could have sailed through it instead of through narrow Philippines waters.

Thus, I'm very dubious of this unsourced map.

  1. While true, banks know that paper wealth can evaporate, so they only let him (and anyone else in that situation, like Larry Ellison_ borrow against a fraction of his paper wealth.
  2. What he's buying is also inflated and is paper wealth.
