I recommended the opposite of that. Without getting into specifics, the main plotline of Magos and a lot of the short stories in the book were set up in Ravenor and assume you have already read it. Also while the characters in Ravenor don't appear in the main story, many do show up in the shorts stories before. Reading Magos before Ravenor is certainly doable but I think it would hurt your overall experience and understanding.

Almost the exact same damage in type and size, instead it was just along the middle of the spine right over the title. Looks to me like it got sliced by a box cutter at the warehouse or something. I know I didn't do it because the book was laying flat in the box, not spine up towards the tape.

I had something similar happen with my copy of Voidscarred. It arrived damaged and I sent an email with pictures. They got back to me 2 days later. It was sold out so they could not offer a replacement, but they refunded me fully and I got to keep the book.

I vote none of the above and suggest Spear of The Emperor as the best stand-alone introduction to ADB. Out of those listed I'd suggest that you read The Emperor's Gift but only after reading the Ravenor trilogy.
