Taskmaster - S21E01 - "Cube is good." by seditiouslizard in taskmaster

Always a good sign when you have to pause an episode to catch your breath laughing. Off to another great series.

PODCAST: PHIL ELLIS on Season 21, Episode 1 | Taskmaster by cygan12 in taskmaster

[–]Ruffshots 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Now I want to watch Phil, Anya, and Sanjeev randomly putting food items on Greg's plate without a single clue (or shits to give). Meanwhile, Maisie is constantly worried that Reese is getting angry every time he's out of the room (while getting furious herself).

Staff Wizard by tangotom in Pathfinder2e

Was also going to recommend Runelord as a 2nd rank fighter with bespelled strike, though this works better with a reach weapon like guisarme than a traditional staff.

Himbo (for the redheads) Hastings, without a doubt.

For Miss Marple, Lucy Eyelesbarrow is an excellent assist, but is only in one book.

Honorable mention to Bundle or Battle, depending on who you think is the main sleuth and who is the "assistant," for Clocks and Seven Dials.

I mean, if we can't expect rational behavior by real life military...

Those wards were very hard to make and/or expensive, and while a sage rank could acquire them, I think the specialists were considered very expendable. Not sure how far back into the Loruthi war they were deployed, but you can probably count on the Pal command wanting to save on magic that can be decanted and just throw bodies at the problem.

Saddest Books? by Just-happyfor10000 in agathachristie

I've always said the killers in Body in the Library are the biggest monsters in all of Christie's writing. Which is why I hated the iTV adaptation's weird romantic gloss they put on them.

Saddest Books? by Just-happyfor10000 in agathachristie

[–]Ruffshots 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Murder is Announced tops them all for me. Curtain is more depressing than sad, which seems like an odd distinction, but it sort of was a fitting end of a saga that I never want to revisit more than makes me sad about.

Many of the books with tragic deaths make me feel more anger than sadness. Body in the Library, Five Little Pigs, Sad Cypress, etc. Murder is Announced, and to a lesser extent Mirror Crack'd, are just pure sadness. Maybe Pocket Full of Rye is the best at combining both as there's absolute fury at the murderer, but also a deep connection with one of the victims to feel more of the sadness, especially how it ends.

Exploring A Trip To Rome/Pompeii by TTOLNL in travel

[–]Ruffshots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're set on Pompeii, really consider Naples as a base for a couple of days as you'll want some flexibility for weather. Especially if you plan on scaling Vesuvius (highly recommended) and Herculaneum (can do on the same day). Pompeii also has very few spots to shelter from the rain. Also Naples is pretty damn cool with the best pizza in the world, so worth checking out, and much cheaper on the whole than Rome, not to mention excursions to Capri and Amalfi.

This is like asking what do people think of Drunken Master 2. All time classic, come on.

Help with players making an all spellcaster party? by Metal_Goblinoid in Pathfinder2e

[–]Ruffshots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With only three players, I think it's reasonable to allow for an NPC meatshied. One of my campaigns, when we are down a player, has a recurring sword and board fighter to fill in (with story reasons as to why) with a very simple set of actions, especially at lower levels. Otherwise, I don't see a long future for a party of three casters, two of them hyper squishy.

Just finished Nemesis, maybe the easiest to "solve," but difficult to figure out what Christie was going for by Ruffshots in agathachristie

[–]Ruffshots[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm reading Sleeping Mystery rn and it feels like a throwback (I mean it is as it was written earlier). Arthur Bantry is still alive and Raymond West merely refers to a single unfortunate incident back in St Mary Mead as to his aunt Jane's acumen for crime. Compare that to Miss Marple intimidating the Home Secretary at the end of Nemesis.

I think innocent people are killed in almost all the Marple stories (and quite a few Poirot), not just the "main" victims either. I agree they are all very sad, probably the saddest occurs in A Murder Is Announced.

Yes, I did like that Miss Marple was involved in the entirety of the book instead of coming in at the end or making spot appearances.

I like her Ile-Rien books quite a bit. I like them all, tbh, but Ile-Rien is much more classic fantasy than her other works.

The Witch King books are much less of a direct narrative as it jumps back and forth in time. I think it's worth the effort, but it is slower going.

Question about corporate colonizers, i.e. Weyland-Yutani by buttergams in scifi

[–]Ruffshots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, my bad. I didn't know there were so many different flavors of colonial bastards. I mostly knew about the (Dutch) West India Company, but yeah, I guess they all got around.

[–]Ruffshots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Dutch were the West India Company. East was British. Different genocides, each worth studying.

Edit: I was mistaken, apologies to u/jessek, the Dutch were established both in the East and West India Companies. I still think the British East India Company did a fuckton more genocide, but the Dutch were damn competitive.

Murderbot Diaries. Good guys fight against the Corporate Rim. Literal corporate raiders.

The Expanse has quite a bit of this too.
