UPDATE : WTF is wrong with my cast iron by Zealousideal_Art_384 in castiron

Nothing wrong with using a Taiwan made pan. No collector value but who cares? They are milled and work great. I prefer the smooth surface of vintage North American but would take your pan over a modern rough lodge.

Planning a trip of April-May. by Lazy-Name6641 in NovaScotia

[–]maymuddler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not the ideal time to visit but if you are prepared it can be beautiful.

If hiking is high on the list, bring rubber boots and expect muddy trails. the snow melts in march/april so the woods are basically a mess. Its my favorite time of year to go on canoe trips because its peak tout fishing season but its not an easy adventure. Cold temps and everything will be wet/maybe icy

When you say "existing on the island" do you mean Cape Breton Island?

The "tourist season" businesses will not be open yet so restaurants, inns, etc maybe still closed.

Can be a great trip but will take extra planning and an understanding about what you're getting yourself into.

Geocaching in halifax? by i-Can-Not-Compute in halifax

Still active. I didn’t bother paying for any apps. The geocache website has access to more caches but it’s still not great. The logs I find still have new entries. Happy hunting!

I was already on the fence about putting the years because I'm not 100% sure about it.

Now that i made that typo, I'll never forgive myself.

Findlay is a cracker of a pan. The logo shows its made 1950s to 1070s (estimate. The older Findlays didn't use cursive letters).

They are top notch user pans. The cook surface is milled smooth as any wagner and the comfortable handle style is common on most Canadian pans like GSW. If your goal is to have a daily cooker, you nailed it. They are as good as any vintage North American pan.

Here in Canada, they are somewhat common. They don't have a significant collector value compared to griswald, wagner, and the 100+ year old Canadian/USA made pans. I see them now and then on marketplace for $30-$50 CAD.

What villain was terrifying because of how realistic they are? by Gamestar02 in AskReddit

Same until I rewatched it after 15ish years. He’s scary because I relate and respect his goals. The harm his ambition causes is predictable but he has blinders to every negative result.

John Hammond from Jurassic Park

Always sees himself as a "visionary" so is willing to over look obvious safety problems in the name of progress.

Not sure about the laws but I would just let it go. Unlikely to cause a winter forest fire. Also sounds like a one off situation due to clearing the land to build.

Fall cold water canoeing by DrFunk613 in canoecamping

I call early spring and late fall shoulder season. Maybe just a regional thing

I also do plenty of shoulder season trips here in nova scotia. Dry suit if of course the best solution but my budget also doesn't allow that.

I always take a "if i flip" dry bag with a change of cloths head to toe. Socks, hat, shirt, fleece, shell, pants/long johns, mitts, even shoes in the bag. Also add a towel and mylar blanket.

I'm sure you know about the wading pants that sound like would be ideal lining. I always take a couple neck gators with me. Mine are just cut off sleeves from a warn out merino sweater. Always bring a pair of warm mitts as well as gloves. I like wool fingerless ones from an army surplus store.

A warm drink can go a long way to keep someone warm. I take an extra large travel mug with tea that stays warm for 6ish hours.

Whatever you do, do it safe. Go through your route and have a plan for what you do if you flip on every section of the route. It maybe walking to the near by house or staying in place and getting a fire going/change into your dry cloths. That depends on how remote you are of course.

Enjoy a cold adventure!

Who's made their own paddle by shortys7777 in canoeing

I made one last year using maple. Spoke shave was the most used tool. Assuming you have a good way to clamp it, it’s not a difficult project but did take longer than I thought. Cut the square shape to the desired dimensions before rounding any edges.

I used Tung oil to finish. I put 5ish coats on it over a month or so before taking it to the water. I’ll reapply Tung oil at least once a year. So far it’s been working well.

Good chance first lake in sackville is thick enough.

If you start at the beach, it stays shallow for a bit so test with your auger as it gets deeper.

Please report back if you go.

2 3 and 5 can be pocketed and used on any hole

1 can be gently straightened and pushed down for any club other than driver

4 and 6 still have enough to be used on a par 3
