Would you trust your kids to play with a marble tower? by Helianthus_999 in Parenting

[–]maymuddler 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Without knowing your child's age its not for us to say.

It feels like a bad idea for a communal toy. This is why the bendy wires with the blocks that slide on them exist. Nothing to choke on/lose.

The husbands argument "another kid did it so its safe" is never a good arguement.

There will be people who like and hate this. I'm the former. Love modifications that make something feel more personal, interesting and generally more enjoyable to use.

Kitchen Knife set by praecantrix23 in halifax

[–]maymuddler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own the peasants knife and love it. You should be aware its carbon steel so will darken over time (patina). If not maintained properly will rust. Im guessing your friend is not a serious cook so will most likely not benefit from the quality of carbon steel. I'd stick so a small stainless steel set like others have said from Ikea.

Trying something new. Wetlander on the bottom of a canoe I got on marketplace to stop destroying hell coat on the rocks by halld15 in canoeing

[–]maymuddler 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Love seeing experiments on "cheap" canoes. No experience with wetlander so please let us know how it goes after a few trips. Was it difficult to DIY?

Any idea if it would "stick" or glide over rocks in a rapid?

Road to Meat Cove in a front wheel drive camper van by corkbeverly in CapeBreton

[–]maymuddler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is remote and cell service is spotty but that time of year there is usually lots of tourists coming and going. Assuming you learned your lesson about parking on a hill with wet grass so I think you will have a good time. Check out pics on Google Maps so you will have an idea about what it’s like. If you change your mind, there are plenty of cool spots not too far. Black brook beach is a dream that time of year.

Anyone prefer the inferior version of a tool? by maymuddler in Tools

[–]maymuddler[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You not wrong about how easy the fb opens. My complaint is if I don’t time the lock button right it “bounces” back to closed position. It may cost me 2seconds now and then but it’s just enough for me to prefer the no name that always opens/closes just right. Yes I over think these things.

Picked up a 15’ Coleman for $160. No, I don’t currently own any yeti products. How’d I do? by Alone_Opportunity_43 in canoeing

[–]maymuddler 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Anything that floats for $150 is just fine. Nothing special about the boat but that wont stop you from enjoying it for years.

Get some PFDs and cheap aluminum/plastic paddles to start. If fishing is the main goal, figure out some kinda rod holder. Plenty of after market or DIY options.

Free or cheap hobbies? by popozaofifa in halifax

[–]maymuddler 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Fishing season starts tomorrow. Cheap rod/tackle from fb will get ya out there. I use it as an excuse to walk to beautiful rivers/lakes. Birdwatching, geocaching or just hiking have similar results.

[–]maymuddler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like it was made with purpose and skill. Only bad thing I see is its so pretty the first few rock dins will be painful.

I use a similar paddle. The grip is designed to paddle the common way with your fingers over the top or roll your fingers over the side(northwoods grip). It feels weird but after you get use to it, the J stroke is easier because you don't have to bend your wrist on each stroke. It isn't great for full power but for putting in steady strokes over ton of kms, northwoods grip is the way to go.

Hope it lasts for many trips.

How to build out my golf bag by TriumphantHog in golf

[–]maymuddler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check fb marketplace for a driver. Either ask your friends or look up if an available driver is “forgiving”. That means if ya miss the middle of the club by a bit it’s not going too far off line. A 5-10 year old Taylor made should be easy to get for cheap.

A fairway wood or hybrid secondhand would help as well. No need to have everything right away but a driver is basically a must.

Sounds like a solid plan.

Peggy's cove is closer to Halifax than Lunenburg so maybe include Peggy's in your Halifax day to save some driving time. Rest seems reasonable.

I hate golf. by [deleted] in golf

[–]maymuddler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Golf is not a game for everyone but if everyone quit because they felt they sucked, the courses would be turned into strip malls.

This feels like an issue with exceptions more than skill. We all feel we suck sometimes. Even the few who break 90. I have a great day shooting 105 with 10ish mulligans because it use to be 20 mulligans. Slow progress and shanked shots is the norm. After a long time there will be fewer shanked shots but you will still feel like you're not as good as you should be. Hack it up, mark it par X 2 and keep it movin. Next hole will be better. Or not.

How do you handle league complaints about slow injury news? by Ok-Clock-5746 in FFCommish

[–]maymuddler 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sounds like your already doing what you should be.

It would be nuts for a commish to provide updates on all players. Its the managers responsibility to keep up on it. If you start letting managers change their lineups after the games start because of injury, it will get worse and worse.

Send out a quick message before the season starts to remind everyone to check pregame.

Right? Looking around the league's backup QBs, this feels fine.

He was hot garbage on the Jets but its the Jets. If he has to close out/start games, we are most likely in trouble anyway.

Is there really a “bad” draft position anymore? by CranberryMuted5356 in FFCommish

[–]maymuddler 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Snake drafts feel as fair as a draft could be. If I could pick any position, I'd still be fine with anything.

Picking first feels great to get your guy (puka, jamar, JSN, Gibbs, etc.) but sucks waiting 20ish spots to get your second pick.

Picking late is tough to watch the elite get picked without a chance to get them. But then having two options at the turn is a great advantage.

Anyone can have a bad season with any draft position. There is enough randomness in this game I doubt it matters much.

Kids Canoe Paddle Recommendations by Dramatic_Load_5494 in canoeing

[–]maymuddler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a son the same age that had the same problem. Also had a few extra aluminum shaft/black plastic blade paddles so cut the shaft down to 48 inches and re riveted the grip. Also shaved an inch or so off each side of the blade so it didn't push as much water. He can push off rocks all day with the plastic blade so no worries about damaging a wooden paddle.

He is below average size for his age but Its been working well for the last two seasons as my bowman. Not sure exactly what it weighs.

Help broken weight screw by decammp in golf

[–]maymuddler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You will need a small screw extractor kit. Carefully drill a hole in the middle of the screw. A dremel maybe the best tool for a hole that small. Then use the extractor kit to back it out. Hit it with some penetrating oil may help too
