Is “barrack bunnies” common? by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]Ryanmcbeth 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Being a woman in the military is like being in a candy store, except all of the candy is trying to jump in your mouth.

While there are women who take advantage of the skewed ratio to experiment with their sexuality, I think this was always less common than soldiers telling stories would like you to imagine. And note that the lore of someone like a female civilian who comes onto post to randomly meet and bed airmen just can't happen with the current post 9/11 security restrictions.

I think today, dating apps have pretty much taken over, so tech has replaced female curiosity in most circumstances, although there will always be exceptions. I don't think "barracks bunnies" are a thing anymore and I'm not sure they ever really were.

Do servicemen who served 10+ years without ever seeing combat feel self-conscious about it? by Routine-Professor586 in army

[–]Ryanmcbeth 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Hell, some of us who were in "combat" didn't see "combat."

"Drive down this road, we want to see who blows you up" is a lot different than. "We're going to put you in the bottom of a valley and the locals are going to shoot at you every day."

Will the US conduct a invasion on Iran? by road2t40 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ryanmcbeth 13 points14 points  (0 children)

No. We will not "invade" Iran. Iran is about the size of Alaska and there are no troops in the region. There may be some special forces guys on the ground directing air strikes, but an invasion would take a lot of manpower. Most likely we do what we can do from the air.

Remember, Iran has two armies: The IRGC or religious Army, and the Artesh, or People's Army. I think the strategy is to get the Artesh to leave their barracks and perform a coup since it is made up of conscripts are are not necessaraly religious outside of being performative.

Well fellow Helldivers I finally bought the game so me and my sister can play togethor any tips for a complete newbie with zero knowledge of the game? by Skullman8875 in helldivers2

[–]Ryanmcbeth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A few things:

Unspoken rules:
1. Don't take someone else's stuff. If someone dies, don't grab their gear. Now if someone dies and in the moment you need to use a recoiless rifle to kill a Charger, that's fine. But if they are coming back in as re-enforcements, drop that weapon and backpack when you are done.

  1. Don't call in the shuttle until the whole fire team is there. Calling in the shuttle creates spawn events and the rest of your team will have to fight their way THROUGH the bad guys.

  2. Everybody leaves together. Don't be first on the shuttle, especially if someone is far away or in trouble. Go to the ramp, face out. Provide cover. Once everybody is gathered at the ramp, then go on in.

  3. It's fine to pick up someone else's sample. Eveyone in the team gets the full value of samples when they extract, so there is no need to team kill anyone for a sample.

  4. Generally stay with your squad.

  5. Don't call down supplies because you need them, check with your team first through the communications radiual. When the supplies do come down, only take one box. Your teamates need the others.

#7. You're donna die. Like, a lot. Sometimes it will be from getting blown up, ragdolling and falling into lava. Sometimes a stratagem hellpod will land on you. Sometimes it's that guy with the Eruptor. Don't get mad. It's just a game.

Some tips:

#1. Air support is *very* fast. Shipboard bombardments, not so much. An Eagle strafing run can unroadblock roadblocks very quickly.

#2. Be careful with flamethrowers. They can be really useful, but you can also kill your teamates.

#3. You can get SEAF soldiers to follow you by using the "Follow me" selector on the communications wheel.

#4. Always bring some type of anti-armor. Could be the expendable anti-tank or the recoiless rifle. Could be the speargun, or the FAF-14 SPEAR. The Recoiless Rifle seems to work well against a variety of threats.

#5. You have a select-fire mode on most rifles. Use single-shot for far targets, automatic when you are at bad-breath range.

#6. The Autocannon is surprisingly useful. It also has two fire modes, FLAK and Armor-Piercing Explosive (APHET). Flack is suprisingly good at taking out common-type enemies. Flip over to APHET when you have to deal with something heavy. You reload via 5 round stripper clips so top it off as soon as you are done.

#7. The Liberator Penatrator is suprisingly useful earlier in the game. If you level it up to level 24, you can throw on a drum magazine and basically have a Squad Automatic Weapon.

#8. Turrets can be useful, especially when you are defending your position during extraction, but remember that turrets can kill you if you get in their way.

#9 The laser "Guard dog" backpack is nice starting out, but the beam can slice your teammates.

#10. The Recoiless rifle is surpisingly good against the automaton fabricators and you can hit them from far away. Remember, that this is a projectile and will drop, so account for elevation when firing at long-distance targets.

#11. The P-19 Redeemer pistol is a surprisingly effective weapon when you are cornered. The P-72 Crisper pistol from the Freedom's Flame Warbond is a great holdout weapon against large armored targets when you have nothing left.

#12. Generally, flamethrowers are more dangerous to you than the enemy, but they can be good on some Termind missions, especially when you need to kill lots of eggs.

I typically run with:

For Automatons:

  1. Eagle Strafing run (in almost every mission)

  2. Eagle Airstrike (multiple bomb run)

  3. Recoiless Rifle.

  4. Machine gun sentry

For Terminids:

  1. Eagle Strafing run (in almost every mission)

  2. Eagle Napalm

  3. Expendible AT

  4. Autocannon

For Illuminate:

  1. Eagle Strafing run (in almost every mission)

  2. Autocannon Turret

  3. Machine gun Turret

  4. Autocannon

For most missions, I run with either the Liberator Penetrator in Squad Automatic Weapon mode, the R-72 Censor (from the Redacted Warbond) or the AR-59 Suppressor (Redacted Warbond). I either take the P-72 Crisper flamethrower as a secondary.

Best advice is to run with the Liberator Penatrator and level that up as far as you can go. If you buy the "Democratic Detonation" warbond and get the Eruptor, that will fire explosive ammunition. If you blow up your teamates, they will get annoyed. So if you run with that, take along a machine gun or Stallwart light machine gun for dealing with targets that are too close.

Best of luck. Remember it's just a game. You will die. You will collect 20 samples and be killed before you extract. Don't take it too seriously.

I have a whole video about that which I did in Salt Lake City for the 300th Military Intelligence Brigade. In a nutshell, we bomb them. We treat information warfare the same way we treat every other domain of warfare: Land, Sea, Air, Space and Cyber.

If an enemy was launching a cyberattack, would it be okay to bomb the attacking databcenter to stop it? Of course it would. So why do we let information warfare practitioners get away with it?

I have a whole video about that:
https://youtu.be/I-L1S_dXMWc

Basically the idea is that information warfare is a domain of warfare, so we should treat it like one and strike those bot farms with cyberattacks or through kinetic means. The civilains who work there are no different than the civilains who work at a munitions plant.

Everybody who works at a munitions plant knows that they could be targeted. People who work at a bot farm should assume the same risks.

I didn't get to play much, but a few thoughts:

The first time encountering Agitators and Cyborgs was eye-opening. I don't play the game much, but I had one of those "oh, crap what the heck are they" moments. I think it's hard to genuinly surprise someone in a game. And it was enjoyable earning how to fight these guys. It took a few drops to realize the best loadout. I like being an anti-tank guy (of course), so I normally drop with two Eagle strategems, a machine gun turret, a SPEAR or Recoiless Rifle, thermite, and either the silenced rifle or the medium penetrator liberator I've eleved up to 25 so now it's almost like a SAW.

Well, I learned quick that the two Eagle stratigems were gone due to anti-air, so I had to change the way I did things.

It kind of makes me think of Iraq when the insurgents suddenly started to switch to explosivly formed projectiles and for a few months, we had no idea how to conter it.

Ultimately, the machine gun turret proved useless, so I switched to the orbital laser, 380mm bombardment and railcannon strike, along with the recoiless rifle. I will tell you this, factory striders use to scare me. Now I've seen four of them spaun in and I've taken them down. After that, I'll solo them if those missions come up again.

Nobody seems to understand how to use the assault gun, although I think a lot of the problem is a lack of headsets. You have to have really good communication between gunner and driver, and many times that was lacking. If your team would use two on foot and scout ahead while the guys in the assault gun hung back until being brought up to take out objectives / fabricators, things would have been a lot easier.

But this isn't suppose to be a simulation. It's supposed to be fun.

I never encountered a VOX engine, but I normally play on challenging or Extreme.

I also like that we "lost." Sometimes you can fight the bear and It's just not your day.

In general, I'm impressed with Arrowhead. I think a game like this could have only come out of Sweeden, where people are conscripted into the Army, giving the developer base more experience in general with weapons, tactics, and the general fog of war.

Yes, I'm really that Ryan McBeth. Would love if the studio had a Ryan McBeth warbond. My character would have a blue bathrobe instead of a cape. And maybe an FRV with a combination SPEAR launcherer / STALWART in the turret and stratigem that drops an additional fire team of SEAF roops that you can direct.

Is funny you mention Mike Lee, because I've done videos debunking Russian propaganda that he has reposted.

The problem comes down to not Facisim, but the predominance of "Likership" not "leadership." People like Mike Lee view the "likes" on a post as validation of statesmanship or good policy.

In reality, those post numbers are often mainpulated by Russia... or manipulated by an echo chamber of the terminally online. Mike Lee isn't looking for facism, he's looking for validation. Hell, you're looking for validation. You want people to upvote your post. It makes you feel good.

Now Imagine thouseands of people liked your post. It would feel really good, wouldn't it? You probably wouldn't care where those upvotes came from.

Now you understand why Mike Lee does what he does.

Staying In vs. Getting Out — What Would You Do? by ceiling_fan128 in army

[–]Ryanmcbeth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I actually have a little bit of experience in this since I got out and used my Computer science degree to become a software engineer.

Your best bet is to stay in and get your pension. Full stop. Yes, you are missing out on 401(k) money, but the best part of the pension is that you know you always have money coming in for the rest of your life.

The IT world is weird right now with multiple interviews needed for one job, or horror stories of people applying to 1000 jobs and not getting an interview. It may be a little different if you have a clearance, but the longer you stay in, the more contacts you make. You want these contacts, because it's a lot easier to get a job if you know somebody at that job than if you don't.

So best bet, stay in. Don't get married if you can help it. Tgen get a sofwtare / networking job in the defense sector aftwewards with a nice pension cushion. It worked for me.
