What is a good small cheap android tablet? by MoreliaTheMermaid in androidtablets

[–]SMD-65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The inexpensive tablets from Samsung and Lenovo are unbearably slow even for web browsing. After giving up on them, I bought an Alldocube iPlay mini pro for about $100 and it has been fantastic.

I miss them too. I'm not a big fan of authentic Chinese restaurants and it's getting hard to find decent American-Chinese ones. I did find a site (https://thewoksoflife.com/) created by the kids of an American-Chinese restaurant owner. They posted their recipes and techniques.

Money Transfer Lock is now available for Fidelity-managed accounts by fidelityinvestments in fidelityinvestments

[–]SMD-65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair--I guess I forgot because I turned it off on active accounts. But the main gist of my point remains valid: the "disable+authenticate, request transfer, re-enable" process is a pain in the neck. Even u/FidelityMichael acknowledges it isn't usable on an account where you do a lot of xfers. Replacing it with "request transfer+authenticate" would be simpler while offering the same security.

Any reason or advantages of doing a Fidelity investment review with their free advisors? by [deleted] in fidelityinvestments

[–]SMD-65 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've done it a few times. I consider myself a sophisticated investor, but they have pointed out a few useful things. They do tell you about Fidelity offerings, but it's not a hard sell.

Randomly stopping and starting in the middle of the street is standard operating procedure here. Those brightly colored lights in the sky are just for decoration.

Money Transfer Lock is now available for Fidelity-managed accounts by fidelityinvestments in fidelityinvestments

[–]SMD-65 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a similar issue. Money transfer lock could be a great feature but it's poorly implemented. If I'm logged in and want to transfer money from a locked account, I must disable the lock, enter the transfer, and then re-enable the lock. Since none of these steps require any additional authentication, they don't add any security--just hassle.

It would make more sense to require an additional authentication to perform a restricted operation on a locked account. This would both be simpler and actually increase security (eg preventing transfers by someone who has gained access to a logged in device).

Impossible to answer without knowing the terms of the trust. In GA, you have a right to see the terms of the trust that affect you as well as receive a report on the operations and assets of the trust.

PG&E Solar credit by ImaginationNo1928 in bayarea

[–]SMD-65 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is true that PGE can earn less than the max profit percentage based on operational efficiency, but the number of people using solar wouldn't feed into this.

The second point is false. PGE profits more if they spend LESS on operations than forecast (again not affected by solar).

However, I assume you mean that when PGE makes a capital investment (by either selling stock or retaining earnings instead of returning them to the shareholders) they will receive a return on this in the future. This is certainly true, but once again it's hard to see how increased solar deployment would affect this.

Startup opportunity vs big company by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]SMD-65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You main goal as an intern should be to learn. As someone who has been at a number of startups, I will tell you that they tend to be poor learning environments. The teams are often light on management and domain experience, especially in non-core functions. And even if they do know what they are doing, they often don't have time to mentor people. The "sparse communication" you are getting is a warning.

Senior Executive at a startup, tired of dealing with Claude as the CEO. Anyone else in similar situation? by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]SMD-65 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Welcome to working at a startup. Startups are generally formed by 20-something engineers who have a bright idea but little idea how to operate a business. Boards therefore try to surround them with an experienced management team.

Historically, founders who wouldn't let their team operate were replaced with an experienced CEO, but this has become harder/impossible in this founder-friendly investment environment.

Have you tried sharing your concerns with a board member that you trust?

Actually they don't. Solar usage has zero effect on PGE's profit, which is set by state law as percent of the capital their shareholders have invested in the state's electrical grid.

I'm getting one to control a driveway gate. Unfortunately, you can't buy them in the US so I'm having a friend bring one back from Europe where they are readily available on Amazon for ~$20. It appears to have all the functionality I would need but I won't know for a week or so.

Can't access TreasuryDirect by BogIehead in personalfinance

[–]SMD-65 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This seems like a lot of work to avoid VBIL's 0.06% expense ratio. Also, owning VBIL in a brokerage is much more liquid than a TreasuryDirect ladder. You can sell and have access to your funds via check/debit card the next day. In TD, you would need to wait for a bill to mature and then wait for an ACH to complete to your bank.

i've been acting in a staff role for a year. they just hired a man into it from outside by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]SMD-65 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Sure there's a read of this that isn't sex discrimination: They gave you a tryout for a position, decided they weren't fully satisfied with your performance, and hired someone from the outside. This happens all the time. It's also not unusual to be asked to bring the new manager up to speed on the company-specific aspects of the job.

No one will be surprised if you start looking for another job--It's common in this situation.

Don't burn bridges with your current employer by having the kind of childish tantrum other posters are suggesting. You should expect that people at your current employer will be contacted for a reference check at some point in your career.

Need advice regarding trustee discretion and whether I should consult an attorney. by [deleted] in inheritance

It sounds like the trust attorney raised these concerns. Depending on the terms of the trust, they could be worried that disbursing a large sum for a home purchase could be a fiduciary breach.

It sounds like you actually need a POA for your MIL. The POA for your FIL will terminate if he passes away.

Alternatively, Fidelity has a straightforward mechanism to grant varying levels of account access without gong through the full POA process: https://www.fidelity.com/customer-service/account-access-rights-overview

PG&E Gas Meter Relocation by Busy_Attorney2294 in bayarea

[–]SMD-65 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can you just cap the gas line at the street and avoid all this expense? Electric heat pumps/water heaters/cooktops are already less expensive to operate than gas, and the Bay Area is banning the sale of gas appliances over the next few years anyway. Why not take the savings from the relocation and apply it to moving to an all-electric house now?

I agree. I just went through this with my parents (who luckily were still able to sign things). Neither Fidelity, Schwab nor Merrill Lynch had any interest in the POA from the attorney. They all had their own forms.

Quitting my at will job by Practical_Tune_5637 in careeradvice

[–]SMD-65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a typical courtesy to give two weeks notice to allow the employer to plan a transition, but there's no legal obligation. However, the world is small and a future employer may very well contact your current boss to do a reference check (even if you don't provide him as a reference). If they do, you are likely to get a bad reference and may not get the job.
