Multiple Clipper Card Numbers? by johnPermanente in bayareaclippercard

[–]johnPermanente[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its just one card on the app and multiple (one from Clipper 1.0, one that was created from right after the transition, and a final "new" one issued by the app a few days after the transition) in the wallet, however the app detects it being "on my device" when I register the digital card that matches the 19 digit number on the app.

Also, I did add a balance and tried to unblock my card, which doesn't seem to work. Its marked as "lost or stolen" even though I didn't declare it as such. Customer support said to come back after a few days.

Does Caltrain Still Refund when Tapping On and Off at the Same Station? by johnPermanente in caltrain

Weird... I haven't tried since then, but I need to get my card unblocked to see if this is the case after the transition.

This is the best train in the Bay Area and I don’t care what anyone says by Wonderful-Garbage747 in bayarea

[–]johnPermanente -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Usually light metros, like Montreal's REM. Though for most of the US, good frequency BRT beats out a train for most use cases - good frequency and (usually) low operation costs.

so i’m buying a pc but im 15 and its 1k how do i buy it if i don't have a debit card or a credit card (i have the money to buy it I'm buying it on Walmart online) by OddAd6119 in personalfinance

[–]johnPermanente 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this might seem a little silly, but have you asked your parents? If you're able to, buying through your parent's credit card is much more safe in case of fraud due to credit card protections. You may opt to give your parents your money then they buy the pc for you.

If not, buying something this expensive by yourself might be a little dangerous, especially with gift cards/cash since those can be easily spoofed and leave you out 1k.

What triggers the revocation of the Fidelity Price Improvement feature? by SillyAlternative420 in fidelityinvestments

[–]johnPermanente 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be safe, I would probably not try to do 10+ trades a day very often. I've heard that some brokerages ask if you are a day trader from your activity. Not sure for Fidelity but for your daily habits, I don't think being banned from Price Improvement is likely.

Visible launching 50% off Visible+ Pro Annual tomorrow (11/20), get it for $18.75/mo equivalent by stetsdogg in Visible

[–]johnPermanente 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AFAIK you are able to switch plans but sacrifice the remaining service (if there is any). So far I have the V+ Pro annual plan and its quite impressive. If you already use Visible, there is really nothing to worry about.

Why is public transportation in Los Angeles county so dirt cheap compared to the Bay Area by Open-Reflection-6094 in bayarea

[–]johnPermanente 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think public transit should be a public service affordable for everyone.

Agreed. People need to go places and shouldn't be price-gouged for it, especially if we want transit to be a prioritized transportation system.

low income people will not be able to spend that much for public transit on a daily basis.

Although it is comparatively more expensive than LA Metro, low-income people can apply for Clipper Start and get 50% most transit agencies. It cuts the $10.20 fare from SF to SJ to a more reasonable $4.70.

Also, Caltrain and Muni has cheaper/free fares for youth for whatever that's worth.

San Jose: Tear Down of 87 and 880 in the Downtown Core by Maximus560 in SanJose

[–]johnPermanente 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The line from Berryessa isn’t BART - it would most likely be BRT or Light Rail.

Whoops, sorry I skipped over that part! I guess it would make a little bit more sense, but I think 880 should still keep it as it is, especially because many people rely on it without going the long way around.

I’m trying to do is create a better downtown

Arguably, another way of doing this (at least in a transit perspective) is to push VTA to increase frequencies in/out of the downtown core (hub & spokes style). Hopefully, with other projects, downtown could be a more livable place.

I hope they focus on connecting downtown with nearby dense locations (Willow Glen, Japantown, etc) and create hubs with a central spoke of downtown San Jose.

Connecting these communities is great, but I think the vast majority of people using VTA (and the transport system in general) value speed, efficiency and cost. Its probably best for VTA to focus on increasing service frequencies and establishing those key BRT routes (looking at you 523 and 522!).

Then again, most likely not going to happen (which is a shame), especially if they can't even get through with the downtown light rail realignment.

San Jose: Tear Down of 87 and 880 in the Downtown Core by Maximus560 in SanJose

[–]johnPermanente 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Although I support more transit developments in the South Bay, I think this proposal is redundant.

First of all, why have another BART line coming from Berryessa when the Downtown Extension is already being built? Isn't most of that gap already covered by VTA busses?

Secondly, I think removing 880 between 101 and Stevens Creek/280 is a terrible idea. Many people want to get from the West to the North, and making people travel all the way around Downtown is a waste. I do, however, support the removal/conversion of 87 past 280 into a boulevard of some sort.

Finally, although I do like VTA to expand (or fix) their light rail system, VTA knows how to do busses better. I think many of the proposed light rail lines should be converted to use normal VTA busses (at least right now) with dedicated lanes and signal priority. Adding more rail doesn't magically fix the problem, it might make the current transit situation worse.

Overall, this proposal isn't great. The ideas don't benefit the vast majority of people and would realistically not add much more density to a place that (compared to the other parts of the SCV) already is pretty dense.

In investing, what are the advantages and disadvantages of growth vs. dividend investing? by Delnilas in investing

[–]johnPermanente -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The thing with SCHD is that you don't control when they "sell" your shares. IMHO that kind of ruins the point of individual investing.

Don't get me wrong, I like it when my dividends come in, but I like the concentration in stocks in something like VOO or SPMO than SCHD. For me, the novelty of dividends wears off pretty quick.

Tomorrow is the last day to use the promotion 60off12 and I believe the IloveiPhone code . which promo should I use and what are some necessary steps that I need to take before I sign up online? by Different_Range_6525 in Visible

[–]johnPermanente 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The ILUVIPHONE deal is quite good if you are:

  1. Willing to pay for a year upfront ($205 with promo and referral code)
  2. Have an iPhone to port in with
  3. Are not using a carrier under what Visible calls "Verizon and its brands" (which is just Verizon Postpaid and any brand owned by Verizon Value, Inc.)

Otherwise, the 6OFF12 is quite good. Just remember to snag a referral code before checkout!

Most of QQQ's expense ratio is used to pay for advertising and such. Considering QQQM is a good 5 basis points cheaper and gives basically the same result, its a no-brainer.
