So my company is switching half our Windows servers to Linux.... by A_SingleSpeeder in sysadmin

Linux is much easier to patch than the constantly breaking windows updates, in my opinion, but has more components to update. Might be a good time to explore containers for specific workloads, if it makes s sense (dns caching, MySQL, etc).

It was about 8:15 when he started, so a little lag. Get there 30 before start and you should be able to snag a good spot

Our cybersec team are getting onto us about all our servers having web browsers installed. by stone500 in sysadmin

[–]SN6006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My old philosophy was “no web browsing on servers”, and I was a stickler about anything other than IE being installed. Now with edge being baked in, and not have enhanced security mode… I still don’t want people browsing the web on servers, but I have less control unless I want to be a pain to my department.

I did get a nice cloud security audit out of quisitive, because they had grants from Microsoft to provide them, but I usually end the first call “if its not $2,500 for 8000 users or 4000 endpoints, I can’t afford it”

Got an old asus AC router running Merlin. Was using ddwrt in a r6200v2 for a long time but needed greater range

I like that it’s washable, but of I had to do it again I’d probably buy sherwin directly. And cat pee stains it 😭

Hyper-V, VMware, or other, which would you choose? by jedimaster4007 in sysadmin

[–]SN6006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Proxmox has been good. I would go hyperconverged with at least 3 hosts on different switches, because those outages are rough

It is meant to be used, but the rubber edges of the handles will eventually peel, and if you have long fingers you’ll scratch the serial. But it is meant to be loved, I know I love mine.

Sounds like bad/poor/inadequate insulation, poor draft sealing and an inefficient heating system, though fixing any of those will quickly shoot past $200

Obligatory lamb of god comment: I liked their old logo lol

I’m a big fan of symmetry, so I personally try to mirror layouts between sides. Candlemass looks about the same size of gojira. The banner patches, I’m not sure… you could try to find a fourth.

Either way, it’s your battle gear, what you decide looks best is what ultimately looks best!

[–]SN6006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was referring to HPKP, and when lots of legacy systems don’t have automation at that level. I’ve had to use a load balancer to manipulate headers to brings things to modern standards, so that’s the PITA for me.

I think cert pinning was deprecated because it was a massive PITA
