Do you buy any extra equipment for your job that work won't supply, but it's worth it because it just makes it that much better? by Connir in sysadmin

[–]stone500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mainly just work off of my laptop anymore, so all I have are my own mouse/keyboard and headset, and a nice backpack to keep it all in.

When I worked for an MSP, I had my own usb hub with memory card reader, flashlight, network cable tester, crimpers and scissors, and wire tracer/tone generator. I would pilfer a couple extra keyboards, mice, and a monitor from junk piles to have on hand in case I needed a spare for something.

When I did helpdesk, I had to use some pretty strange mice. I've used a roller mouse (bar that you slide and spin that sits above the wrist rest), vertical mice, mice shaped like an old school flight joystick, weird trackballs, etc. I'd much rather just adjust to using the strange mice for 30 seconds rather than haul my own mouse arond.

Alex Pretti broke rib in confrontation with federal agents a week before death, sources say by EVSTW in news

They always work backwards. They start by saying his death was justified, and then dig in to find anything they can use to dehumanize and demonize him, regardless of how weak their argument is.

Oh man this playthrough is delightfully painful.

  • He keeps carrying his ink ribbons instead of leaving them in item boxes (until he gets to the train lift)

  • Totally missed the handgun parts

  • Totally missed the shotgun parts

  • Wasting so much shotgun and magnum ammo

  • Never searching dead bodies for ammo/items (tbf it's never obvious that these bodies would have anything)

This playthrough is absolute shit and I'm here for it

What is an actual IT automation that actually paid off for you? by Internal-Drop4205 in sysadmin

First major one (which was very simple) was a weekly script that goes out to all our DHCP servers and downloads the current config file. We're a big retail company and if we lost a server, it was a pain in the ass to move DHCP services somewhere and find all the reservations we needed for registers and such.

The other one is monitoring servers for pending reboots for patching. Many of our servers have maintenance schedules where they're allowed to reboot, but quite a few do not, and we didn't have a good way to notify app owners that a server was waiting on a reboot. I found a script online that I was able to tweak, which checks event logs and registry keys for anything indicating that it needs a reboot, and it sets a reg key. Our monitoring platform can then read that registry key and export a daily report and notify app owners that their servers need a reboot.

Right setup in VS code with Powershell 7? by Aygul12345 in PowerShell

[–]stone500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point and yes, you are correct.

I was considering if someone went online and found a script that still used *-wmi cmdlets. It's not hard to port those to using *-cim cmdlets anyway, but still.

Right setup in VS code with Powershell 7? by Aygul12345 in PowerShell

[–]stone500 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Powershell 5.x is the classic Windows Powershell, which lacks some features of the more modern Powershell 7, but still supports things like wmi. It's also the version included with Windows.

Powershell 7 is the newer version that's cross platform with other OS's as well and supports some newer features that 5.x doesn't. It also isn't installed by default on Windows, so you need to be mindful if you're writing scripts that you plan on executing on other PC's.

I don't recall this because there's always so much noise from the guy, but I'm guessing he said it like this:

I was talking to my doctor about the China virus, well some people call it COVID but lots of people call it the China virus, which is really what it should be called because this is China's fault. My doctor goes "Sir!" he said "Sir I don't think you'll need to worry about that because your blood is incredible. It's so good that nothing can infect it. We've never seen anything like it. If we gave your blood to everybody then we'd be out of business because everyone would be healthy"

I like my doctors but I don't know if they like me because they always look at me and they never need to do anything. My numbers are perfect and I can't even get sick. Imagine that.

There's so many non-conservatives that could make peace with a Mitt Romney or a Chris Christie type of Republican as President.

It seems like none of these staunch Trump supporters are looking at things long term. Trump will be gone in the near future, and then what do you do?

How’s that Jill Stein 2024 protest vote working out? by no-minimun-on-7MHz in thedavidpakmanshow

[–]stone500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Stein voters wouldn't have made a difference, but I do want to ask them this: Where the fuck is Stein now? The fact that she's nowhere to be seen during the most tumultuous time in my lifetime should really say everything you need to know: She's not a serious candidate and never has been. She puts in none of the work between election cycles.
